Tricycles, with their three-wheeled builds, have long been a good alternative to a traditional bike for those that find balancing on two wheels a challenge. They provide a lot of extra stability, which can be particularly useful for seniors or those with a disability or mobility issues.

Electric Trikes, just like a regular electric bike, can give that extra bit of assistance alongside, or instead of, normal pedal power. This means that it can allow those that can’t pedal or only have limited capacity the chance to get out on the roads much more easily.

Some traditional trikes can also have a more substantial storage attachment, and this makes them a popular choice for pedal-powered couriers too. With the added boost of the motor from an e-Trike, it means the extra weight being carried is not such a burden.

Trikes can also be safer for riding in winter conditions. They can handle a patch of ice with much more stability than a normal electric bicycle would.

They can be more comfortable for riding in heavy traffic as there is no need to put your foot down for balance every time you stop. They are also, of course, an environmentally friendly way to commute.

Types and Classes of Electric Trikes

Like a traditional e-bike, there are three different types of Class for e-trikes in America.

Class 1

For those that do not have a throttle function, only pedal assist, and don’t exceed 20mph on a motor of 250w or less; they would be Class 1. There aren’t usually any restrictions on where they can be used.

Class 2

For those that have a throttle function and don’t exceed speeds of 20mph using this, they are regarded as Class 2. They can have a motor up to 750w. In the States, again, there aren’t usually any restrictions on where these can be used.

Class 3

Class 3 are e-trikes that go over 20mph using the pedal-assist or throttle, and they often have a motor over 250w power. You should always check the local laws and regulations for where and how they can be used. The people for bikes website is a useful resource.

Recumbent Trikes

There are also different styles of trikes. The two most common are the traditional upright and the increasingly popular Recumbent Trike.

best electric recumbent trike

Recumbent Trikes are not just growing in popularity for people with mobility challenges. They are designed so that you are sitting in a laid back, more spread out, position and the frame is very low to the ground.

This can help to reduce any back pain, and it can avoid weight bearing on wrists and other joints.

Because they are aerodynamic and you gain increased pedal power from the high backrest, this can have excellent propulsion too.

These types of trike are often chosen by those looking for an extreme, almost karting-like, challenge on the roads and trails. Electric Mountain Bike enthusiasts may enjoy switching things up and testing one out.

If you have been used to riding a normal bike, the feel of riding an upright or recumbent trike can take a little getting used to. You do not need to lean into turns as you do on a two-wheeler, and if you do, you can risk toppling if you lift one of the wheels off the ground.

Once you have gotten used to the different feel, though, you are in for a very steady ride.

What Else to Look For in an Electric Trike

E-trikes are not as in demand as traditional e-bikes, so there are not as many models to choose from. Some of the big named brands have not yet developed any electric-assist trikes.

However, it can still be overwhelming to make a decision!

Some are built with extreme comfort and stability in mind, but don’t reach particularly high speed.

Others are designed to transport large loads easily.

Still others have a bigger electric motor and battery capacity, maximizing distance and getting you to a higher speed.

With all of the options available, you’ll want to have a pretty good idea of exactly what you’ll be using your electric trike for before you make a decision. That’s why we’ve reviewed a range of options below to make sure we’ve given the top choice for pretty much every situation.

Reviews of the Best Electric Trikes

When we reviewed these five electric-assist trikes, we looked at some key criteria. Some of these included:

  • Value for money – Electric Trikes can vary significantly in their pricing. We look at a range of budgets and want to make sure that they are offering the best value for their price bracket
  • Motor efficiency – We compare the power, efficiency and level of smoothness of the motors.
  • Battery efficiency – We compare the batteries in terms of their efficiency, power and charging speeds
  • Overall performance – How do the trikes cope on the ascents and descents? How do they handle, what is their suspension like? What is their weight capacity?
  • Reputation – How does the brand stack up against its competitors. Are they known for producing robust, high performing trikes?
Terra Trike EVO_1400x

This model is made by a reputable company that specializes in developing trikes. You know you are going to get something well made, with reliable parts, and that has gone through rigorous testing. It also comes fully assembled, so only small adjustments have to be made before you get out on it.

The recumbent style offers a comfortable riding position, especially if you plan on traveling over longer distances. The TerraTrike excels at this, boasting a maximum distance of 60 miles on a mighty 750w motor. Unlike the upright AddMoTor style, it provides full back support too, for maximum comfort.

The powerful motor and 8-speed drive shift mean that it handles steep ascents with ease and accelerates surprisingly quickly. But even with all that power, it’s remarkably quiet, giving it yet another point for comfort!

Just note, though, that this is specifically crafted for road use, where it excels.

There’s no suspension system on the trike, which means that on rough terrain it can be harder on the body. Take into account the low profile road tires and you can see why it’s not suited for extreme trail riding.

While it is made specifically for roads, just be aware that the low riding position means it can be more challenging to get a good view of surrounding traffic, though this is an issue with all recumbent bikes and trikes.

It is stable and comfortable but, as with most trikes, care should be taken when negotiating corners at speed. This will avoid a wheel lifting and causing a potential topple, especially if you have to brake hard.

Unlike the AddMoToR, this is a pedal-assist only trike. It does not have a throttle option. It is great for those that want to use it to gently up their fitness and for some extra assistance. It is not, however, a good choice if your mobility means you need full power help at times.

At over $3,000 it may not be the best option unless you have already trialled a recumbent style and you are not planning any serious off-roading.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2 Pedal Assist
MotorFalco 750W 5 Phase Motor
Battery SizePanasonic, 36V, 11.6 Ah/417 Wh lithium-ion battery
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance60 miles
BrakesAvid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brakes
Charging Time4.5 hours
Max Load Weight300 lbs
Drive TrainmicroSHIFT 12-32 8 Speed
Weight64 lbs

What We Loved

With up to 60 miles distance capacity on a single charge, this is a great option for longer rides.

The powerful 750w motor makes handling steep climbs a breeze.

It is also very comfortable and aerodynamic and lightweight.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This does not have a full-throttle option, so it is not suited to those with very restricted mobility.

It is also not the best choice for extreme off-roading. The tires and frame are not designed for that.

Verdict

This is a powerful option for long-distance riders on roads or smoother trails. Don’t forget; it does not offer full-throttle assistance.

BEST LIGHTWEIGHT UPRIGHT FOR COMFORT

#2. Raleigh Tristar iE

Raleigh are known for their simple, no-nonsense, fairly priced and reliable bikes and this upright e-trike is no exception.

This is a Class 1 pedal-assist trike which specializes in providing comfort and maneuverability on the road, so if you’re looking for the thrills of high-speed off-roading, try our number 3 pick, the AddMoTor MOTAN M350 (reviewed below) instead.

It has a max assisted top speed of 15 mph, but this is sufficient for daily commutes and hobby riding.

The 350w mid-drive motor is very good at handling the hills. There is even space to add a second battery to allow you to go longer distances without needing to recharge. Do expect it to be a little noisier than some motors though.

The aluminum frame is exceptionally lightweight in comparison with the other uprights we have reviewed, and this makes it easy to move around after dismounting. The low step-through frame also means it is not too high for getting on and off.

It is good for carrying cargo, with a large rear basket.

While it has potent acceleration capacity with its mid-drive motor, shifting the gears can be a challenge when powering. Pausing pedaling and anticipating the gear change you need in advance can help.

Despite being mechanical, rather than hydraulic brakes, they are generally well-reviewed in terms of their responsiveness. As with all trikes, care should be taken not to brake too hard on corners.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 1 Pedal Assist e-trike
MotorTranzX 350 watt mid-drive motor
Battery Size48V 8.7ah lithium battery (417Wh)
Max Speed15 mph
Max Distance35 miles
BrakesFront v-brake and rear mechanical disc brake
Charging Time4-6 hours
Drive TrainSturmey Archer 3 speed internally geared rear hub
Weight85 lbs

What We Loved

This is a lightweight and comfortable bike that has a powerful motor that handles hills well.

Why it Might Not Work For You

It is not suited to speed demons with a max of 15mph, and it is not a bike for serious off-roaders or those that need full throttle assistance.

Verdict

If you need a helping hand on your daily commute or for transporting small cargo, this easy to handle and lightweight bike could be perfect. It is also on the lower scale in terms of budget too, which is a bonus.

BEST ELECTRIC TRIKE FOR TRAIL RIDING

#3. Addmotor MOTAN M-350 P7

Addmotor Motan M-350 P7

This is a good all-round trike Class 2 Trike with pedal assist and throttle function. It could be a great option for using on daily commutes and for hobby riding on trails.

It has front suspension and also in the saddle post. This means it can handle rougher terrain more comfortably than some of the other bikes we reviewed.

It also has a 750w power motor so it means that it can zoom up steep inclines with ease, even if the bike is laden down, and it is quick off the bat when accelerating.

There is a rear storage compartment, and the bike can handle up to 300lbs in weight. This makes it a great choice for a daily commuter who wants to stop for some shopping on the way home or wants to carry their laptop and other work gear.

It could even work as a small item courier trike or for bringing your small dog along for the ride. You would, of course, need to get them used to being in the back and ensure they are suitably secured.

While the suspension is great for bumpy terrain, if you are an adrenaline junkie, care should be taken when trying to negotiate turns at high speed. The rear tires can sometimes lift if you are pushing the bike to its limit.

It is only available in one frame size, so it may not work for extremely tall riders. It is lower to the ground that some upright trikes though and this could be helpful for those that struggle to lift their leg high for mounting and dismounting.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2 Pedal Assist and Throttle on Demand
Motor750-watt, front axle mounted brushless motor
Battery Size48-volt lithium-ion Samsung battery (499.2 wh)
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance45 miles
BrakesTEKTRO front and rear wheel disc brakes
Charging Time4 hours
Max Load Weight300 lbs
Drive TrainShimano 7 speed
Weight110 lbs

What We Loved

This offers one of the more comfortable rides thanks to its fat tires and the front suspension and the extra suspension in the seat post.

It also can carry up to 300lbs and has a very handy and decent sized rear cargo basket. This makes it ideal for taking on a shopping trip or for carrying your work supplies.

Why it Might Not Work For You

At nearly $3,000 this is not the cheapest trike, but it still has some fairly basic components. It has a mechanical rather than hydraulic brake system, and it is the most heavy duty trike we reviewed too, so not so easy to lift and move.

The smaller rear brake can also be a potential risk for tipping if the brakes have to be used suddenly at high speed. It is perhaps not as stable as some other options and care should be taken if using on very bumpy trails.

Verdict

A good all-round e-trike with a powerful motor and battery and front suspension, meaning that it can travel decent distances, copes well with hills and offers a comfortable ride.

The fittings on this mid-range trike are not the highest spec, so it may not have the same longevity as some of the more top end ranges.

Belize Bike Twin Tri-Rider Tandem Trike

The Belize range of bikes are known for being simple, functional and not too expensive. Their specification is not high end, but they are known for having good motors and batteries.

If you want to try tandem biking, with a little extra boost and stability, then this e-trike could be the right choice.

It is available in a blue or red frame and comes part assembled.

The motor is a surprisingly powerful 500w so it will carry you both up any hills with considerable ease. It also has pedal assist and throttle on demand function, so you can cruise along at your leisure if you desire.

The frame and tires are very basic, and it doesn’t have any fancy suspension or a hydraulic brake system. You can’t expect this bike to handle any rough terrain. Smooth roads and cycle paths are what it is designed for.

It does have a convenient and generously sized rear storage compartment too. Perfect if you plan to make a little day trip with a picnic.

Specs

Type of BikePedal Assist and Throttle on Demand
Motor500W front brushless hub motor
Battery Size12Ah 48V SLA battery pack
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance19 miles
BrakesFront v-brake and band rear brake
Charging Time4 hours
Drive TrainShimano 6 speed thumb shift transmission

What We Loved

This has a powerful motor and a decent battery and also has a handy storage compartment.

Why it Might Not Work For You

It only comes part assembled, and you may need to get the help of a professional bike shop to complete the build.

This is a budget brand, and you do get what you pay for. Don’t expect top-end specification.

Overall Verdict

If you are not looking for a fancy model and you just plan to do some smooth and straightforward touring, this bike could be for you. For the price (less than $2,500), it does offer good value for money.

BEST ELECTRIC TRICYCLE ON A BUDGET

#5. MotoTec

MotoTec Electric Trike 48V 500W

This model, while referred to as a trike bike, is really a mobility electric scooter, trike and Segway combination. Be aware it does not meet the legal requirements to be classed as a mobility scooter.

It is only throttle powered; there are no pedals. It is also possible to ride this trike standing or sitting, whichever is most natural or comfortable.

It is a popular choice for senior citizens and those with disabilities. It is also used in warehouses and event spaces. This allows the user to travel around more quickly without overexertion, and it manoeuvres well into smaller spaces.

It has a powerful but relatively quiet motor and can travel up to 25 miles on one charge, so that it can go the distance. The throttle can be somewhat jerky, and it can take some practice to have a smooth and controlled acceleration.

It is not designed for rough terrain and could risk toppling, so not one for using on grass, gravel or trails.

This is a budget offering, and while it is much cheaper than all the other bikes reviewed, it can certainly not be considered high spec. You shouldn’t expect anything other than a basic model for getting you from A to B. It is also narrower than most of the other bikes, including the handlebars. This is great for space-saving and manoeuvring, but not as good for stability.

The instruction manual also leaves a lot to be desired. Allow time and patience to complete the assembly.

SPECS

Type of BikeThrottle activated only
Motor500-watt front wheel hub motor
Battery SizeFour 12V 12Ah batteries (48V total)
Max Speed22 mph
Max Distance25 miles
BrakesLeft handle front drum brake system
Charging Time4-8 hours
Max Load Weight240 lbs
Weight93 lbs

What We Loved

For those with limited mobility, this is a great low-cost option for getting you from A to B. The motor is powerful, and it can generate quite a pace.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is a basic model with no pedal power option, and it is not suitable for use on anything other than clean, smooth surfaces. It is not designed to carry as much weight as some of the other models either.

Overall Verdict

If you have a very restricted budget and limited mobility, this basic e-trike could be a good starting point.
