Safety and Recalls

In 2015, hoverboards were at the height of their popularity. Every kid wanted one for their Christmas, and new suppliers were springing up all the time. The market became saturated and, inevitably, some manufacturers started cutting corners to produce the cheapest and most competitive models.

This resulted in hoverboard models being brought to market that were not meeting the appropriate safety standards.

In 2016 over half a million hoverboards were recalled after numerous reports of their batteries catching fire after overheating

Since then, new, much more stringent safety tests and regulations have been put into place surrounding the sales of hoverboards in the US.

Always Look For UL2272 Certification

The Consumer Product Safety Commission stipulates that only hoverboards that receive UL2272 Certification will meet the safety standards required for sale in the United States.

So, when you are looking for a hoverboard, always make sure that it has this Certification, otherwise, you could be at risk of the product having substandard batteries or other electrical parts.

All of the hoverboards we have reviewed below are UL 2272 Certified.

Take Sensible Safety Precautions When Riding

While it is, of course, important to purchase a hoverboard that meets the safety standard in terms of its electrics, it can’t be ignored that hoverboards can result in some nasty injuries too.

Always make sure that young children are properly supervised, on a model that does not reach crazy high speeds, and that they are wearing protective gear, especially a helmet. They should be used in spaces that are safe too. No busy roads or speeding through a mall full of shoppers!

Quick Hoverboard Facts and Features

When you are looking at what hoverboard to purchase, some key things are worth considering, including the following:

Speed and Power

Some hoverboards can go over 10mph. This is seriously fast when you consider their low center of gravity and how it is a hands free mode of transport that requires some significant balancing skills.

For beginners and young children, don’t pick a model that can go too fast, or make sure it has different speed settings at least.

Of course, if you plan to use your board on surfaces other than smooth roads, then you will want a more powerful motor, with tires that can also handle gravel, sand or grass.

The battery should also be a powerful lithium-ion variety to provide you with a generous range.

Weight Capacity

A lot of the budget models are designed for younger riders and can only handle a maximum weight of 165lbs. For heavier riders, you will have to shop around more, otherwise, the board won’t have the power to hit fast speeds or tackle rugged terrain when you are riding.

A lot of manufacturers advise what gradient incline the board can handle, and it will be useful to look out for this if you live in a hilly state like San Francisco.

Apps and Other Features

A lot of hoverboards now come with really advanced apps. These are great for tech-heads or for keeping your kids entertained while they track their speeds, distance, and other statistics.

These are not essential when it comes to Hoverboards and using them will drain your battery life more quickly, but they can often be useful for regular riders. It is always worth checking out what features the app has. If the board doesn’t have an app or Bluetooth capability, then the price should reflect this.

Reviews of the Best Hoverboards

EDITOR’S CHOICE

#1. Segway minipro

SEGWAY miniPRO Smart Self-Balancing Transporter

Specs

Motor2x 400 watt motors (800w power overall)
Battery54.3 VDC, 310 Wh, lithium-ion battery
Charging Time4 hours
Maximum Speed10mph
Max Distance14 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight28 lbs

What We Loved

If you are new to hoverboarding and want to minimize the chances of losing your balance, this could be a great option. It is also a good choice for if you are nervous about your children injuring themselves.

Unlike most hoverboards, the Segway miniPro comes with an adjustable knee control bar which provides a lot of extra balance, stability, and ease of maneuverability. Some may argue it is not truly a hoverboard, but hey, it is pretty darn close.

This is also a powerful little beast with two 400w motors. It can handle hills with a gradient of up to 15 degrees without too much trouble.

The very wide 10.5-inch vacuum tires also help to provide a comfortable ride on bumpier road surfaces. This really is a big plus as a lot of traditional hoverboards use more basic, solid tires that are not as big. You can certainly feel the difference in how this model handles the lumps and bumps.

It is a nippy little model too, and it can handle speeds of up to 10mph. Another nice feature is that it is initially set to go no faster than 4.3 mph until you have completed the new rider learning mode tutorial. This saves you having to worry about getting out of control when you are just getting used to the riding style.

The MiniPro has the most powerful battery of all the models we reviewed. This means it has a great range capacity and, depending on your riding style and weight, it can take you as far as an impressive 14 miles in distance.

Aside from the knee control bar, the other major selling point for this model is that it comes with a mobile app with lots of great features. It allows you to do all sorts of things, including moving the board remotely, change the safety setting and locking it. If someone tries to move the board when it is locked, it triggers an anti-theft alarm.

It has a robust but relatively lightweight magnesium alloy frame, and it is built to last. It absolutely feels like a solid piece of machinery.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The one feature that can prove to be frustrating with the Segway MiniPro is that it has an auto-slow function that means that when you hit its top speeds, it automatically puts the brakes on and starts to slow you down again, rather than just letting you sit at top speed.

For experienced riders that want to maintain those speeds and have smoother riding experience, this could prove to be a deal-breaker. It also tends to pull you back and can be off-putting and set you off balance if you are not used to it.

Although it is still reasonably light given the knee control bar, it is still more substantial than your average hoverboard and not as compact for taking on public transport.

The knee control bar will provide you with more stability than a traditional hoverboard, but learning to steer with your knees still takes some getting used to. You can’t just get on this and scoot off at top speed. You will have to spend some time learning how to master its use.

With the additional kneebar, powerful motor and responsive app, this model is not the cheapest. If you are on a budget, you may want to try one with fewer features to begin with.

It doesn’t have a particularly generous maximum weight capacity, so not ideal for heavy riders.

Overall Verdict

If you are just entering the world of hoverboarding, then the Segway MiniPro could be a good choice.

It is easier to ride than a normal model, and it is also a gadget lovers dream with all the additional app features. The auto-slow feature, however, could prove a turn off for riders that like to max out the top speeds.

TOP PICK FOR HEAVIER RIDERS

#2. Swagtron Swagboard Outlaw T6

Swagtron Swagboard Outlaw T6 Off-Road Hoverboard

Specs

Motor300w dual motor (600w power overall)
Battery36v, 96.2 WH
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed12mph
Max Distance12 miles
Max Capacity420 lbs
Hoverboard Weight30.55 lbs

What We Loved

What sets the Swagtron Swagboard Outlaw T6 apart from other hoverboards is its massive weight capacity. It is rare for them to go above 260lbs, but this model can accommodate up to 420lbs.

It seems to be the only product on the market that can cope with those sort of weights, and it makes it a perfect choice for heavier riders.

Even when it does have a heavier rider using it though, because of its powerful 300w dual motors, you are getting a total of 600 watts of oomph. This means it can still tackle rougher terrain and steeper gradients with relative ease.

There are not many boards that can manage up to 30-degree gradients, but the T6 can. If you live in a hilly area this could be worth investing in, just watch on your way back down!

The wide ten-inch air-filled tires help to give you a smooth ride, and they are very grippy and provide plenty of traction.

There are three different speed riding modes, and this means that you can work on building your confidence up gradually before attempting high speeds. It is also useful if parents want to limit how fast their kids go.

This model also has a good app that allows you to track speeds and distances, along with how much battery power you have left.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is a heavy hoverboard, weighing in at 33lbs. Of course, because it is one capable of off-roading with bigger tires and a more powerful motor, this is to be expected. It just means it is not one that is suited to be carried around a lot.

Swagtron are a well-known brand, but, unfortunately, they do not have the best reputation in terms of their after-sales customer support. If you have a problem with your board, be prepared for difficulties getting in touch and delays in responses.

When you buy an off-road capable model that has a more powerful motor and sturdier build, you do have to expect to pay more. However, at nearly $400, this board is not for those on a budget.

Overall Verdict

A powerful and robust model that can tackle hills with ease; it is just a shame that Swagtron don’t have the best reputation in terms of customer service.

FASTEST HOVERBOARD

#3. EPIKGO Classic

EPIKGO Self Balancing Scooter Hover Self-Balance Board

Specs

Motor400w dual motor (800w power overall)
BatteryLG 4300m AH, 37v battery pack
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed15mph
Max Distance10 miles+
Max Capacity240 lbs
Hoverboard Weight31 lbs

What We Loved

EPIKGO are fast developing an excellent reputation in the world of hoverboarding. They have high specification products that are built to last.

The EPIKGO Classic is fast, fun and capable. It is claimed that it can reach a top speed of 15mph, although this would only be recommended for the most confident riders on smooth surfaces. The acceleration on this thing is off the charts, and it really does take some getting used to.

It might not manage as steep hills as the Swagtron T6, but it can still cope with 18-degree gradients without too much hassle. The all-terrain knobby tires are super grippy, and they will deal with grass, gravel and sand. Just be prepared for your battery draining more quickly when you go off-road as the motor has to work a lot harder.

Despite its power capabilities, EPIKGO have managed to keep this board until 30lbs, so it is a bit easier to transport than some other models that can cope with off-roading.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The tires on this model are not air-filled, and they are only 8.5 inches, so you don’t get as smooth a riding experience as some of the other models that are designed for off-roading. Okay, you don’t have to worry about a puncture, but it is a disappointment given the price and considering it is designed to be able to handle rougher terrain.

The bulky frame also means that it doesn’t turn as fast as some of the sleeker models, although you do get great stability.

This is the most expensive of all the models we reviewed. While the high-quality build is great, it is a real shame that there are no extra features. There is no app or Bluetooth capability, and there are other models that offer better value for money.

Overall Verdict

This is a fast, robust and reliable hoverboard. We are not sure if it can justify its seriously high price tag though, especially as it doesn’t come with an app or Bluetooth.

GREAT OFF-ROADER

#4. Gyroor Warrior

Gyroor Hoverboard Warrior 8.5 inch All Terrain Off Road Hoverboard

Specs

Motor700w motor
Battery4.0Ah/36V Lithium Ion Battery
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed9.95mph
Max Distance9.5 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Hoverboard Weight33 lbs

What We Loved

The Gyroor offers a lot for a relatively conservative price tag. It has a powerful 700w motor, and it is capable of tackling hills with up to a 30-degree gradient.

It has a sturdy build quality, and the grippy, solid 8.5 inch wheels are designed to cope with some light off-roading. Compared to a lot of other models, it really does have a particularly solid construction.

It charges up within 2 hours, and it still gives you a decent range and speed. It might not take you up to the dizzying speed capabilities of the EpikGo, but, unless you are a speed demon, reaching 10mph is plenty fast enough on a hoverboard!

This model also has Bluetooth capabilities and high quality built-in speakers so you can listen to your choice of music while riding too. The app has a lot of good features, including speed control and setting it for child or adult mode, which is a nice additional touch.

Why it Might Not Work For You

At 33lbs, this is one of the heavier models we reviewed. Not the best option in terms of portability.

The solid tires, while puncture-resistant, don’t offer as smooth a riding experience as the air-filled tires do. A bit of a shame when you are off-roading as you can feel the difference.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for a good value model that can cope with hills and off-roading, then the Gyroor Warrior could be a good bet.

IF YOU WANT REAL STREET CRED

#5. Lamborghini Twodots

LAMBORGHINI TwoDots Hoverboard

Specs

Motor400w motor
Battery36V 4.0AH Lithium Ion
Charging Time3.5 hours
Maximum Speed9.3mph
Max Distance9.3 miles
Max Capacity264 lbs
Hoverboard Weight33 lbs

What We Loved

Okay, so a lot of people will be attracted to this board because it has the Lamborghini name attached to it. Yes, it does look pretty sleek but, more importantly, this is a very well built board with a lot of functionality.

It has decent top speeds and range and a reasonably powerful motor. It can tackle some lighter hills, up to 15 degrees in gradient, and the acceleration is impressive.

It also has a very interactive app with lots of unique features and Bluetooth speakers.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is not a model for those on a budget, although you do get a lot for your money.

The motor is not as powerful as some of those we have reviewed, so it will not be as efficient off-road or going up hills, although it will still manage them. Just be aware that the battery will drain a lot faster.

If you really want top ‘Lamborghini’ like speeds, this is not one of the fastest models on the market. The top speed of around 10mph is still hair-raising if you are new to boarding, but the Epikgo would be a better choice if you really want to push the limits.

Overall Verdict

Sleek and robust, with a well-designed app, this is a good all-around board for a middle price point. It could be a great starter option, and having the Lamborghini name attached to it will certainly add to your street cred!

GOOD FOR BEGINNERS

#6. Razor Hovertrax 2.0

Razor Hovertrax 2.0

Specs

Motor350w dual motor (700w power overall)
Battery36V lithium ion battery pack
Maximum Speed8mph
Max Distance8 miles
Max Capacity220lbs
Hoverboard Weight 22lbs

What We Loved

So this board is not going to win any prizes for speed, range or power. Where it does shine is in its ability to help new riders gain their balance more easily.

The toughest challenge for new riders on hoverboards is learning how to stay stable and balanced. The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 has what they call ‘everbalance technology’.

Most hoverboards start to self-balance once they feel the weight of the rider. This means that you have to get used to being on the board while it makes these adjustments, and it can be tricky to master feeling stable and getting used to the feel.

With this model, as soon as you turn the power on it starts to self-balance and it means that once you step onto it, you feel more stable immediately. It does still take practice to master, but it can be a useful bit of help when you are first starting out.

This is also a very light model, and it means it is better for smaller kids and for general portability.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Apart from the weight and self-balancing features, there is nothing else that really sets this model apart from others on the market. There is no app or Bluetooth, and it doesn’t have the best range or high top speeds.

Overall Verdict

This board might appeal for young riders or beginners that are worried about mastering their balance, just don’t expect lots of additional features.

LIGHTWEIGHT AND GOOD FOR KIDS

#7. Tomoloo

TOMOLOO Hoverboard with Bluetooth Speaker UL2272 Certified Self Balancing Electric Scooter

Specs

Motor250w motor
Battery36V/2Ah lithium
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed7.5mph
Max Distance7.5 miles
Max Capacity165 lbs
Hoverboard Weight17.5 lbs

What We Loved

If you are looking for an entry-level board for kids that is pretty eye-catching, then the Tomoloo could be a perfect choice.

It is very affordable, one of the cheapest we reviewed, but it still has some unique little features.

For starters, it is exceptionally lightweight. This will make it easier for kids to move it around when they are not using it.

It has Bluetooth speakers to allow you to play music through the board.

It also has LED lighting that change color in time to the music. Perfect for use at parties.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is a basic board in terms of power. It is not going to cope with steep climbs, heavy riders or rough terrain. It has a maximum top speed of just 7.5 miles per hour.

This is great for nervous parents who don’t want their kids to be able to go too fast, but you do need to be aware of its limitations.

Overall Verdict

As a light and affordable entry-level board, with features that will appeal to kids, the Tomoloo ticks a lot of boxes. Just don’t expect too much in terms of power.

Swagtron Swagboard Pro T1

Specs

Motor250w motor
BatteryLG Battery Lithium Ion
Charging Time1 hour
Maximum Speed8mph
Max Distance12 miles
Max Capacity220lbs
Hoverboard Weight22lbs

What We Loved

The Swagtron T1 is an affordable model that would suit beginner boarders. The brand is well-established, and they were also one of the first models to receive their UL 2272 Certification. You know you are getting a product with a focus on safety.

At just 22lbs it is pretty lightweight which makes it great for kids and for portability.

It charges in a super-fast 1 hour. This also makes it a good choice for kids as they won’t get too fed up waiting for it to charge in between rides.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is a basic model. There are no app or Bluetooth capabilities, it only has a 250w motor, so it needs to be used on smooth surfaces, and it won’t cope with hilly terrain. The tires do not provide any buffer for cracks in the road either, and it is not the smoothest riding model out there.

Swagtron claims this model has a pretty decent range of up to 12 miles but, honestly, unless you are extremely light and riding on smooth flat surfaces, getting anywhere close to this is going to be a challenge. The 250w motor and less powerful battery mean it doesn’t have a very far reach.

Overall Verdict

For kids that are new to boarding the Swagtron Swagboard Pro T1 could work. Other models around the same price point offer more power and features though.

FAST ALL-ROUNDER

#9. Gyroor G-F1

Gyroor G-F1 Hoverboard,8.5_ Off Road Hover Board

Specs

Motor700w motor
Battery4.0Ah/36V Lithium Ion Battery
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed12mph
Max Distance10 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Hoverboard Weight33 lbs

What We Loved

The Gyroor F1 is a good all-round board. It has an impressive top speed of 12mph and a powerful 700w motor.

It provides a really smooth riding experience, even though it has solid rubber tires, and can handle some light off-roading well. Grass, gravel and sand are not a problem for this model.

The app has a lot of useful features including anti-theft detection, self-balancing activation, riding speed controls and more. It even has the option to produce a racing sound while riding. Okay, this is just a bit of a gimmick, but it is sure to appeal to the kids.

Despite its power, it still reaches full charge within 2 hours, and it can still manage distances of up to 10 miles on a single charge, depending on your weight and riding style.

Although the Gyroor is on the heavy side, at 33lbs, it has a handle integrated into the design and it makes it easier to carry than a lot of other models.

Why it Might Not Work For You

If you are on a budget, the Gyroor F1 will not be for you, although it does still offer good value for money in comparison to some of the other models reviewed.

It is a pretty hefty 33lbs, not the easiest to transport, although the carry-handle is a nice feature.

Some users have reported issues with Bluetooth connectivity.

Overall Verdict

The Gyroor F1 offers a lot of features and versatility for a mid-price board.

GOOD BUDGET OPTION

#10. Xprit

XPRIT Hoverboard w Bluetooth Speaker

Specs

Motor250w dual motor (500w overall power)
Battery36V | 4.4 Ah Li-ion cells
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed6mph
Max Distance7 miles
Max Capacity165 lbs
Hoverboard Weight19 lbs

What We Loved

This is by far the most affordable of all the models we reviewed. Despite this, it still has some nice features.

It has a reasonably powerful motor, and it is very lightweight at just 19lbs.

It also has Bluetooth capabilities so that music can be played through the board.

Why it Might Not Work For You

You can’t really expect a high tech board when you consider the price of this model. While it is a good option for younger and entry-level riders, it only reaches a top speed of 6 miles per hour, and it won’t take you further than 7 miles maximum range.

It is lightweight, but it is not suited to heavier riders, and it won’t cope with sand, gravel and grass all that well.

Overall Verdict

If you are on a budget, the XPRIT offers good value for money. It is basic, but it could work well for lightweight riders and kids that don’t want to go too fast.

Best Reasons To Use a Hoverboard

Hoverboards are a seriously fun mode of transport. They are great for adrenaline junkies that want to test their balancing skills, especially at high speeds. Perfecting your balancing skills on a hoverboard can be a transferable skill when it comes to sports like surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding too.

They are not going to get you fit and work your cardio like a pedal-assist electric bike will, but they can help with muscle toning, core strength and flexibility.

They are also not really generally considered an ideal commuter mode of transport like e-bikes and electric scooters. Some Hoverboards, though, are used in places of work for zipping along long office corridors or for working in warehouses. In these instances, there do need to be a number of safety restrictions in place.

They are the perfect gadget for involving all the family too. Because a lot of hoverboards can carry young riders from their early teens, right up to adults, it is something that everyone can take part in. If you only have one board, just watch out for arguments breaking out over whose turn it is next and make sure you select one that can handle the weight of heavier adult riders too.
