Any serious cyclist will want to track their speed, distance, routes and a whole host of other statistics.

Some riders will opt to go for sophisticated GPS trackers, like the Garmin.  Unless you’re looking for a heck of a lot of in-depth data, you don’t necessarily need to go to that extra expense.

There are an increasing number of helpful, free mobile phone apps, like Strava, that allow you to track lots of different data.

If you want to access real-time stats or directions during your cycle, you’ll need to be able to check your screen safely and conveniently.  To do this, you’ll need a phone mount to hold it at the right angle and fasten it securely to the handlebars or stem of the bike.

With thousands of different products on the market, trying to whittle it down to the most functional and durable options can be tricky.  We’ve done the leg work for you and selected five of the best bike phone mounts that will work for a variety of different situations and mobile shapes.

Reviews of the Best Bike Phone Mounts

The type of bike phone mount you select will depend on which shape of phone you have, how much protection it needs and where you want it positioned.  The five recommended below all offer their own distinct advantages.

Quad Lock Universal Bike Mount Kit

What We Loved

The Quad Lock Bike Mount products are well-made and well-respected.  If you want a secure, durable model, then you can’t go wrong with their items.

The brand has a variety of design options. If you want maximum security and protection, it would be better to opt for the mount along with a hard shell Quad Lock case that is compatible with your phone.  Most iPhone and Samsung models are catered for.

If you have a phone that isn’t compatible with one of their cases, you use multiple phones, upgrade regularly, or you want to lend the mount to friends or family members, you can opt for the Universal Bike Kit.

This includes the mount itself and also a Universal Adaptor.  The adaptor locks into place on the mount, and it has a very strong adhesive surface that allows you to attach it to the phone or an approved standard case.

With a Quad Lock mount and case, you can be reassured your phone will be very secure and there will be no rattling or wobbling.  The simple design features mean it’s easy to set up and remove from your bike too.  You can set it to a vertical or horizontal position, and the case won’t impede the screen view or block the headphone port either.

If your phone isn’t totally waterproof, there’s even an additional cover that comes with the cases that can be placed over your phone to keep out rain and debris.  I would describe it as water-resistant rather than waterproof, but it’s still a nice little extra.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The standard mount doesn’t fit on all stems or handlebars.  You should check the measurements before you order.

The mount uses either hard-wearing elastic bands or cable ties to secure it.  The bands can break after frequent use.  While the cable ties are very sturdy, if you need to change the position or swap it to a new bike, they’ll need to be cut off.

The universal adaptor isn’t foolproof.  It doesn’t work for all phone types or their cases.  The surface it sticks to needs to be non-textured and non-porous.  If your phone has a rubber, silicon or soft-touch coating you’d be better getting one of the model-specific cases, which will ensure your phone will remain tightly secured in place.

Overall Verdict

Lightweight, durable, stable and easy to fit, the Quad Lock products are reliable and multi-faceted.  This more than justifies their higher than average price.

Just be aware that the universal adapter won’t adhere to all phone casings, and you should check your handlebar and stem measurements to ensure the mount can be positioned where you want it.

BOVON Bike Phone Mount

What We Loved

If you’re looking for a one-piece design that is easy to use, fits most phones and doesn’t cost the earth, you can’t go far wrong with the Bovon Bike Phone Mount.

It uses stretchy silicone bands to hold the phone in place, and the adjustable silicone belt will wrap around most handlebar sizes for a secure fit.

Despite the price, you can still rotate the phone so it can be viewed in a horizontal or vertical format, and it won’t fall out of position.

Unlike some plastic cases, you won’t have to worry about the silicone bands scratching your phone, and they won’t impede your screen view too much.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although it works for most phones, it’s not completely universal.  Always double-check the measurement of your phone to ensure it’s compatible.

The silicone design doesn’t offer much protection from any dirt, debris or gravel.  Some phones can be mounted inside their own case, which could help a bit, but if you ride on dirt tracks a lot, you might want a case with more coverage or a frame bag instead.

Although the phone is unlikely to escape the silicone bands and they also help to absorb the shock of bumps, be aware that your phone may move around more in this type of mount compared to the rigid Quad Lock design.

The design isn’t going to handle the wear and tear that the Quad Lock is likely to be able to either.  The bands can start to break after a lot of rough treatment.

Overall Verdict

If you’re looking for an inexpensive, simple to use and versatile design that can work for most phone types, this one from Bovon will tick a lot of boxes.  Just don’t expect it to be as durable as some of the harder plastic or metal designs.

Topeak Omni Ride Case Dx

What We Loved

Topeak are known for making well-designed accessories for bikes, and the Omni Ride Case DX is no exception.  This design will fit most Android phones and even some iPhone models.  However, you should always check the measurements before ordering.

Using silicone grippers, it holds the phone in place securely with or without its case.  It’s more sturdy than an entirely silicone option (like the Bovon), though, as it has a hard polymer backing.  This also ensures your phone stays in a more stable and secure position.

The mount is robust, well made and uncomplicated.  It can be adjusted to fit on your handlebars, stem or even the stem cap of the bike.  Plus, you can set it to allow you to position your phone in a horizontal or landscape position, depending on your preference.

Why it Might Not Work For You

There are a few drawbacks with this design from Topeak that you should consider.  Firstly,  it’s pretty pricey in comparison with the likes of the Bovon design.

Also, the silicone grippers can cover a fair bit of the top and bottom of your phone screen.  This can sometimes cause an issue for certain touch screen functions or accessing the home button.

If you’re looking for a case that will protect against dirt, debris or rain, this isn’t going to be the best choice either.

Overall Verdict

Although more pricey than your average bike phone mount, the Topeak Omni Ride Case DX ticks a lot of boxes.  Not least that it is robust, secure and versatile.  Just be prepared for it hampering your base screen view slightly.

Best Frame Bag + Phone Mount

#4. ROCKBROS Bike Bag

ROCKBROS Bike Bag

What We Loved

Serious all-weather riders will want something that will keep their phone dry and safe, even if it’s pouring with rain.  The RockBros frame bag could be just the ticket.

It features an incredibly sturdy carbon composite case which has a TPU film window.  This will protect your case from inclement weather and also from dusty road conditions or flying gravel.    It also has a raised screen around the top which helps to deflect the sun’s glare, making the screen easier to read.

The window still allows for effective touch screen function – unlike some screen covers which can make it tricky to use as normal.

The bag easily fits onto the stem of your bike and is held securely in place with long and durable straps.  The case then attaches to this using a large, strong piece of velcro.

The two side pockets are extremely handy and will allow you to carry keys, cash, energy bars, sunglasses and even a compact mini pump.  There’s also an additional slim pocket under the actual phone case.  The pockets aren’t huge, though – so don’t expect too much.

The case comes in two size options, and they’re generous enough to handle most phone shapes.  However, you should always check the measurements before ordering.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This type of bag won’t appeal to every rider.  It’s only possible to fit it to the stem of your bike, rather than the handlebars.

This can make it less easy to glance at the screen quickly.  Plus, it’s rather large and cumbersome, and the bags can get in the way when mounting and dismounting.

Overall Verdict

Perfect for all-weather riders that don’t have a waterproof phone, the RockBros Frame Bag also allows you to carry some handy little extras in its pockets.  It’s just not as compact or streamlined as a traditional bike phone mount.

MaxMiles Motorcycle and Bicycle Cell Phone Holder

What We Loved

The MaxMiles Phone Holder is very durable and versatile.  The one-piece design means you don’t have to have a separate mount and case, and it adjusts to fit most phone sizes (for bigger phones, they also do different models).  It can fit on most handlebars and slim stems.

Made from aluminium, you’re not going to have to worry about silicone bands that lose their elasticity or break.  It’s incredibly robust.

The mount also holds your phone very securely and tightly and doesn’t move around on your handlebars.

There are no worries about this design impeding onto your screen or the home button either.  This is a low profile and sleek design.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This mount doesn’t offer protection from gravel, dust or rain.  Your phone will need to be waterproof and, preferably, fitted in it’s own protective casing.

If you’re fitting your phone without using a case, you’ll also have to watch that the aluminium grips don’t scratch the sides when securely fitted.

The phone is pretty easy to install, but it comes with a tamper-proof bolt to tighten the mount to the tube.  This needs a specific Allen key, and it’s a pain if you lose this.

Overall Verdict

The MaxMiles phone holder utilises a very hard-wearing and secure design.  You’ll just need to check it fits your phone size and handlebars or stems before ordering.

Different Types of Phone Mounts

Not all bike phone mounts are designed for use with all mobile brands, and some are specifically designed for use in certain types of conditions too.

There are three main styles of phone mounts available, and we’ve outlined below what these are and when their use might be most appropriate.

man using best bike phone mount

Case Mounts

If you’re looking to ensure that your phone is held very securely, then opting for a case mount will be a sensible option.

These are usually a two-part design.  The first piece clamps to your bike handlebars or frame stem.  The second part is the protective case that holds your phone.

Once your phone is inside the case, it can then be locked onto the mount to hold it securely in place.

The cases usually come in hard or soft-shell varieties.

Hard shells are more durable and hold your phone very securely.  However, they also tend to be more expensive, and you’ll have to ensure you select the size which is appropriate for your phone.

Soft-shell mounts often utilise stretchy silicone straps.  They’re good if you’re on a budget and they can usually fit on multiple phone sizes.  This is perfect if you upgrade your phone regularly.  They don’t tend to be as durable, though, and sometimes they might not hold your phone as securely.

Universal Brackets

If you don’t want to have two pieces of kit, selecting a universal bracket might appeal.  The bracket secures to your bike handlebars, and then it has a mechanism that will grip the phone.  It can be adjusted in size so it’ll work with most phone sizes.

While it might cost less and you won’t have to worry about juggling two items, universal brackets don’t always hold the phone as securely as a mount system.  Poor quality ones can also scratch your phone, which they grasp onto directly.

Frame Bags

If you regularly cycle in wet weather, selecting a frame bag will ensure your phone stays safe and dry.  It can also help prevent pieces of flying gravel from damaging your screen.

These bags usually sit on the top frame stem rather than your handlebars, and they feature a transparent front, which is usually still touchscreen friendly.

Frame bags often have additional handy pouches so you’ll have somewhere to store keys, money and other small essentials securely.

You’ll just need to ensure the model you select is truly waterproof and that the touch screen feature of your phone can still be used in the bag.  It isn’t always as easy to read the screen when it’s not positioned on the handlebars either.
