Occasionally saddle bag designs are larger and could be used for lightweight touring. You may even be able to carry a spare change of clothes in them. This is often a preferred choice over a rucksack, as it’s more comfortable for you when riding and it ensures the centre of gravity is lower. Keeping your body free of extra appendages may also help to prevent further injury if you were to take a tumble.

If you’re looking for a really compact, lightweight and unobtrusive saddle bag, you might want to consider the Lezyne Micro Caddy. It comes in a small and medium size, but even the medium is pretty neat.
The bag is narrow and flat and fits very snugly against the saddle. Some saddle bags hang low, and they won’t allow you to fit a rear light to your seat post. You won’t have that issue with the Micro Caddy.
The velcro strap that attaches the bag is wide and strong and ensures a very tight and secure fit.
Using tough, water-resistant fibre, the bag is durable and well-made.
There are a couple of drawbacks that are worth noting. Even the medium bag is exceptionally compact. You really are only going to be able to fit in the absolute essentials in terms of tools and maybe a snack bar, some keys and cash.
Lezyne has a great reputation for quality products, so it’s a bit of a shame that the zippers can sometimes fail over time too.

The well-made Topeak Aero Wedge sits snuggly up against your saddle bag, it has a generous opening that is easy to access your supplies from, and it comes in five different size options. This allows you to select the one that will best suit your needs in terms of what you plan to pack.
The larger bags are very generous in their storage capacity and have additional expandable storage compartments. You’ll just have to keep in mind that you may have to raise your saddle post more to allow them to fit. This means it might not be the best choice for shorter riders.
If you’re opting for a large bag and planning to pack it with heavy items, it can start to have a little slack and this can cause it to catch the rear tire. It can also cause the strap to start to come loose from the bag itself. It’ll be best suited to lighter weight items.

The BV Bicycle Y-Series Saddle Bag shares similarities in design with the Topeak Aero Wedge, and it comes in a variety of sizes too.
These bags are very reasonably priced, while still offering a lot of functionality and durability in their design. They’ll be a good choice for anyone on a budget.
It’s worth being aware that the sizings are not as generous as the Topeak Aero Wedge. Double-check before ordering, and only go for the small sizes if you want to travel with the absolute basics.
The zippers can be rather stiff, and the straps aren’t as durable as those on more expensive models. Sadly, also, the nice additional feature of the light clip isn’t all that functional. If you attach a light to it, it tends to sit at an awkward angle.

The Aeroclam is markedly different from a traditional saddle bag and is made from tough injection moulded plastic. You won’t have to worry about seams or velcro degrading, zippers bursting or the bag losing its shape or sagging. Plus it’s a great all-weather option and easy to wipe clean.

If you don’t want an additional water bottle on your frame, or you want to carry two bottles for extra hydration, then the Topeak MondoPack Hydro might appeal.
This is an oversized saddle bag, so you shouldn’t be expecting it to be as streamlined or discreet as your average design.
With a generous 1.7l capacity, it also has an additional mesh pocket to allow you to hold a water bottle.
Although the bag has very generous storage capacity, the long, thin design and main flap opening mean that it can be tricky to fill it to the top with multiple items without them falling out again. It does, however, have a handy, easily accessible side pocket with inner elastic straps that are ideal for storing tools.
Also, because of its long design, you might have to lift your saddle up significantly to fit it on your post. It can interfere with the wheel if it’s set too low. For bikes with short seat posts, it might not work at all.
Although the bag has a light attachment, if you have a 750ml water bottle in the pouch, this makes it impractical to use.

It’s very lightweight, and a simple two-way velcro strap fitting system makes the bag easy to install and ensures a very snug and secure fit.
Made from a tough, ballistic waterproof nylon, this hard-wearing bag will keep your supplies dry. You’re not going to have any issues with cash becoming soggy or phones getting damaged in a downpour.
The bag comes in two sizes, but neither are designed for carrying much more than essential tools and spares really. If you want a bag to carry spare clothes or extra snacks, this isn’t going to be the design for you.
Also, the velcro strap length isn’t perhaps as generous as it could be, and it sometimes be a challenge to fit it around the frame, especially when the bag is stuffed full.

If you’re looking for a saddle bag for multi-day trips, then you can’t go far wrong with the Blackburn Outpost. This large capacity saddle bag with an attached dry bag will allow you to carry all the essentials and then some.
The removable dry bag has an impressive 11L maximum capacity – way more than any of the other bags that we’ve reviewed. Even the saddle bag part on it’s own can fit a decent amount of kit.
It’s well made and fits securely to your bike using velcro straps and a clip fastened strap. Although Blackburn don’t market the bag as being fully waterproof, it can hold up against heavy rain exceptionally well, keeping all your kit dry. This is especially important if you’re doing a multi-day trip and are carrying spare clothes.
If you don’t plan to use your bag for multi-day trips, the Blackburn wouldn’t be the design to opt for.
For starters, it’s way more expensive than a compact saddle bag. Plus, being so big means that it can cause issues with stability when fully loaded. The manufacturers don’t recommend filling it with more than 4.5kg of gear, and it isn’t recommended for lightweight carbon frame bikes.
It’s length and width also mean it can sometimes rub your legs when pedalling, and for short riders that don’t raise their seat post, it might not fit the bike appropriately.
The dry bag design, while waterproof, means it can be fiddly to access items quickly while on the road. Plus, the bag is so cavernous, trying to find a small item tucked away could result in you having to empty the whole thing out!

With a thick, sturdy 3D Shell casing, this is a robust bag that holds it shape well and will offer protection for delicate items if you accidentally drop it while detaching it from the saddle.
RockBros have designed this bag only for allowing you to fit in the essentials, but it’s easy to install and sits snugly and securely up against the saddle.
Despite its size, it still has handy internal pockets and dual zippers for ease of access.
Longevity can be an issue with the straps on this model, and they can become compromised when used for a long time on bumpy surfaces. I believe that RockBros have listened to feedback, however, and upgraded the strapping system as a result.
There can also be some issues with fit, depending on the type of saddle you have.
