Can you imagine your bike hitting speeds of up to 80mph? Would it be adrenaline-inducing fun or sheer madness?

For an electric bike to be legally roadworthy it won’t go any faster than 28mph using the motor-assist function in the United States. In Europe, it is even lower with a 20mph maximum, and even 15mph in some countries.

If you have ever ridden an electric bike, you will know that this feels pretty fast as it is. Real care is needed when riding at these speeds. You don’t want to be heading out without a helmet and, ideally, some other protective gear.

Mega adrenalin junkies, organized racers, collectors of high-speed vehicles, and those with access to private land might consider something that goes beyond road-legal options. There are a few models that push the limits of the speeds that can be achieved on a humble bike frame.

What are Speed Pedelecs?

If you want a fast e-bike for legal use on roads in the United States, then you want to opt for a Class 3 Speed Pedelec. Bikes are classified from 1 to 3, depending on their motor size and achievable speeds.

Class 3 means that the engine size can go up to 750w. For Class 1 and 2, the maximum motor size is usually 250w.

S-pedelecs can reach up to 28mph using pedal-assist mode. For Class 1 and 2, they can only go up to a maximum of 20mph using pedal assist, or in the case of Class 2, also using throttle power.

You should always check the local laws regarding e-bike classification. Some states don’t follow the above guidelines, and in Europe, the laws are even stricter.

The People for Bikes website is an excellent and up to date resource for local State rules and variations.

Our focus will be on providing you with some guidance on some of the best road legal Speed Pedelecs available on the market at the moment…but we’ve snuck in the absolute fastest in the world as well, just in case you feel like going crazy.

How Fast Can an E-Bike Actually Go?

We know you will be curious about how far electric bikes can be pushed in terms of speed. The top 3 on our list will be some of the fastest electric bike in the world out there right now. Don’t forget that these are not off-the-shelf models that you can take straight out on the road.

These have been developed to impress, push the boundaries of technology and design, break records and hit the headlines. They come with a pretty hefty price tag too.

One of the bikes featured could potentially hit the heady heights of 80mph, but this would be a pretty hairy ride.

If you already have a good quality standard bike, it is even possible to make your own super-fast electric version. This involves buying a motor conversion kit.

We wouldn’t recommend this, though, unless you understand and abide by the classification regulations and you take appropriate safety precautions. Converting your bike takes time, and it can be technically complex. A lot of people opt to get help from an expert when fitting it.

What Else to Look For in a Fast Electric Bike

If you are purchasing a road-legal speed pedelec, you shouldn’t just look for the fastest models.  There are lots of other factors that should influence your decision, including what you plan to use the bike for and what your budget is.

For reviews 4 – 10 below, which are the road-legal speed pedelecs, we have also looked at some other criteria when making our decision about which ones to feature.  These include:

  • Value for money – E-bikes vary significantly in their pricing.  Speed pedelecs with their bigger motor are often at the higher end of the price scale.  We look at a range of budgets and want to make sure that they are offering the best value for their price bracket
  • Motor efficiency – We compare the power, efficiency and level of smoothness of the motors.  They are often more powerful than those on a Class 1 or 2 model.
  • Battery efficiency –  We compare the batteries in terms of their efficiency, power and charging speeds
  • Overall performance – How do the bikes cope on the ascents and descents? How do they handle, what is their suspension like?  What is their weight capacity?
  • Reputation – How does the brand stack up against its competitors.  Are they known for producing robust, high performing bikes?

The Three Fastest eBikes in the World

FASTEST ELECTRIC BIKE IN THE WORLD

#1. Swind EB-01

“Official” Top Speed: 60 mph
Potential Top Speed: 80 mph
Price: $20,000

SWIND EB-01 MTB

If you have ever wondered what it feels like to travel faster than a cheetah on a pedal-assisted bike, the Swind EB-01, which launched in 2018, could help you achieve this.

Manufactured by an advanced tech team involved in developing products for Supercar and Formula One participants, you know you can geek out over the specification.

With a whopping 15kw of near-silent motor power, it is no surprise that its official top speed is 60 mph. By way of comparison, most top speed pedelecs have a maximum motor size of 750w. The developer has even claimed that, with a little modification, it could potentially reach the dizzying heights of 80mph. This has, however, yet to be put to the test.

The battery is a doozy too. It can go for up to 80 miles and charges in a super fast 90 minutes, whereas most standard e-bikes take at least four hours for a full charge.

These bikes are, unsurprisingly, made to order and will set you back a mere $20,000 plus taxes. It’s a steal!

RUNNER UP

#2. Revolution by High Power Cycles

Top Speed: 55 mph
Price: $9,999

Revolution by High Power Cycles

High Power Cycles have a stellar reputation as one of the best, and most advanced, high power e-bike developers in the United States, and further afield.

Their 2019 Revolution model tops the speedometer at an eye-watering 55mph. It has an impressive pedal assist range of 50 miles, on its 5,000w motor, and a seriously fast acceleration speed.

Again, you will have a three-month wait for this baby, and it will cost you almost $10,000 for the privilege.

SECOND RUNNER UP

#3. Stealth B-52

Top Speed: 50 mph
Price: $6,800

Stealth B-52

Australian company Stealth has been at the forefront of high powered e-bikes for several years now.  There are now several companies that have e-bikes that can reach the dizzying heights of 50mph, but Stealth was one of the first.

The Stealth B-52 has a 6,200w motor and a 2,000wh battery and has a range of up to 60 miles.  It is pretty heavy, weighing in at 51kg but, let’s face it – the bike will be doing all the work for you anyway!

For such a speed monster, it even has a more attainable price point of under $7,000.

BEST FAST EBIKE FOR DISTANCE RIDING

#1. BULLS SIX50 E2 Street

BULLS SIX50 E2 Street

Specs

MotorBosch Performance Line Speed, Gen 2 350W
BatteryBosch lithium-ion, 36V/13.4 Ah/500 Wh
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance120 miles
BrakesTektro Dorado Hydraulic Disc
Charging Time4.5 hours
Drive Train10 Speed Shimano
Weight54 lbs
Price$3,899

What We Loved

This bike can go the distance.

Depending on the mode you use, it can go as far as a whopping 120 miles on one charge.  For long-distance rides this is fantastic.

Of course, if you are pushing up close to its top speed of 28 mph the whole time, then you can expect it to be less than half this distance. It is still pretty impressive.

As with all Bulls bikes, it has a seriously impressive set of specifications.  There are responsive hydraulic brakes which you want on a speed pedelec, a powerful battery which allows the distances it can travel, and an efficient mid-drive motor.

The 2.25 inch Kenda tires are wider than average for a road bike. This, combined with the suspension fork, offers a more comfortable ride and it can even manage on less extreme trails.  This is unusual for a bike designed for the roads.

The Six50 E2 Street comes in four different frame sizes – perfect for finding a comfortable riding position.

Why it Might Not Work For You

While it does offer good value for money, this bike is still not cheap, so it’s not suited to riders on a budget.

For those used to riding a traditional road bike, you may find the wide, mountain bike type of handlebars take a bit of getting used to.

For a high-end road bike, it is pretty heavy, coming in at 24kg.

Verdict

If you are a road rider, but you want to mix things up a bit with a little off-roading, the Bulls SIX50 E 2 Street could be a good option.

If you are not pushing it to its limit, it will also go the distance.

Because of the price point, it is best suited to experienced riders that will get regular use out of this high-end model.

Max Distance75 miles
BrakesTektro Dorado Hydraulic Disc
Charging Time5 hours
Drive Train30 Speed 3×10 Shimano
Weight60 lbs
Price$3,499

What We Loved

This bike is quite unique for a speed pedelec as it also has a twist throttle function.  When using the throttle it tops out at 12mph, so it is not very fast, but it can be useful if you are drained after a particularly long ride.

As you would expect with a high-end model from BH Bikes, it has a top-quality fit-out. It features responsive hydraulic brakes, a powerful battery and Schwalbe Puncture Protection tires.

It has nice little added extras like a rear rack, fenders and lights all included.

BH Bikes are well known for their excellent after-sales care and warranty.  It comes with a two year one as standard, and there is the option to upgrade to a five-year version by registering (for free).

Why it Might Not Work For You

While it offers value for money, if you are new to e-bikes and you are on a budget, you may not necessarily need to spend as much.

This bike only comes in one frame size, so it may not provide the most comfortable fit for everyone, especially extra-tall riders.

This bike is heavy.  At over 60 lbs, it will not be as easy to lift on and off public transport, for example.

Verdict

The Evo City Nitro is a good all-round road bike with a high specification, and having a twist throttle function is a bonus.

It is heavy, though, so not ideal if you want a zippy and easily transportable commuter.

Magnum Premium Folding Speed Pedelec E-Bike

Specs

Motor8Fun Rear Mounted Geared Hub 48V 500W
Battery48V / 13AH / 624WH
Max Speed24 mph (pedal-assist), 20mph (throttle assist)
Max Distance55 miles
BrakesPromax Mechanical Disc
Charging Time6 hours
Weight55 lbs
Price$1,999

What We Loved

Folding electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular for commuters. They are much easier to transport on public transport, in the trunk of a car, and at the workplace.

These types of bikes are generally not able to generate as impressive a top speed as the Magnum Premium. While it doesn’t reach the 28mph point that most of the speed pedelecs reviewed here do, it can still take you up to a zippy 24mph. This makes it a great option for commuting quickly.

It also has a throttle assist mode, unlike a lot of high-speed bikes, and this goes up to a maximum speed of 20mph.  If you don’t want to exert yourself too much on the way into work, this makes it a great option.

It is pretty good value for the specification, and the frame and folding mechanics are robust and stable.

Folding bikes are not usually able to travel as far as some of their rigid frame counterparts on one battery charge. The fact that the Magnum can manage a maximum estimated range of 55 miles makes it an ideal choice if you have a long daily commute to your workplace.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This bike is heavy for a folding model. People usually look for a lightweight option to make it easier when folding down and transporting.

Also, the mechanical brakes will not be as light and responsive as the models we reviewed with a hydraulic brake system.

The drive train is pretty basic, with only seven levels.  So it may be a challenge to maintain the top speed for any duration.

Verdict

Folding bikes rarely get above 20mph.  So, if you are looking for something compact and portable, that also gives you a bit more speed, then this could be a practical choice.  It offers good value for money too.

BEST FAST EBIKE ON A BUDGET

#4. IZIP E3 Dash

IZIP E3 Dash

Specs

MotorTranzX M16 Center Mount 350W
Battery418Wh Downtube Mounted
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance35 miles
BrakesTektro Hydraulic Disc
Charging Time5 hours
Weight53 lbs
Price$1,999

What We Loved

This bike is one of the most economical we have reviewed.  Despite this, it still has hydraulic brakes that are quick and smooth to react and a throttle-on-demand option.

It features a RockShox suspension fork, meaning it will handle bumps in the road that bit more smoothly.

The mid-drive motor is more discreet, and it will provide extra assistance when tackling any hills.

The bike comes with rear rack, fenders and lights.  Considering the price, this is a bonus.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The IZIP doesn’t have a great mileage range in comparison to others reviewed.  Perfect for short trips, but not the best for long-distance riders.

While it doesn’t impact on performance, the mid-drive motor generates more noise than some.  This could become annoying for some riders, depending on surrounding noise levels.

The step-over frame may not appeal to everyone, especially if you don’t have such long legs!

Verdict

An affordable and comfortable bike, for entry and intermediate level riders, the IZIP E3 Dash could make a practical, durable and fun choice.

LIGHTEST FAST EBIKE

#5. Trek CrossRip+

Trek CrossRip+

Specs

Motor350-watt Bosch Performance Speed mid-drive motor
BatteryBosch PowerPack 500Wh
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance85 miles
BrakesSRAM Force CX 1, hydraulic disc
Charging Time4.5 hours
Weight45 lbs
Price$3,999

What We Loved

This aluminum-framed bike is the lightest we reviewed.  This makes it perfect for commuters that may have to carry their bike up stairs to an apartment or office, or lift it on and off public transport.

Providing you are not using it at its top speed setting, the Trek CrossRip+ offers better than average distance capacity.  It means it will work well for longer commutes.

As you would expect with a Trek bike, and one of this price point, it has high-end hydraulic brakes, a powerful motor and a good battery.

The drop-bar set up allows more range of hand positions than you get on most of the other bikes we have reviewed.  You can then select the one that is the most comfortable for you.

It comes in 5 size options, which is more than usual, so you can make sure you get a really comfortable fit.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This bike is pretty expensive, and there are, arguably, other less expensive models that offer just as much as this bike does.  In terms of value for money, it is not the best of those that we have reviewed.

Just a small thing, but the rear rack will only work if you attach panniers, so not as versatile as most of the other racks included as standard.

Verdict

As you would expect from Trek, this is a well designed and functional bike.  Apart from it being so lightweight, though, there is nothing that majorly sets this apart from some of the other models featured given its higher price point.

PRACTICAL AND REPUTABLE

#6. Raleigh Redux iE Step Over

Raleigh Redux iE Step Over

Specs

MotorBosch Performance Speed, 350W
BatteryBosch Powerpack 500Wh, DT Mount
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance65 miles
BrakesTektro M735 Hydraulic Disc
Charging Time5 hours
Drive TrainShimano Deore SL-M6000, 10 Speed
Weight51 lbs
Price$3,499

What We Loved

As you would expect from Raleigh, this bike comes with a powerful mid-drive motor, high performing battery and responsive hydraulic brakes.

It is reasonably light and, because of the battery size, it also has a decent mileage range.

The premium Schwalbe Supermoto X tires, with puncture protection, offer additional grip and comfort.  They are a good choice for gravel roads and for riding in wet weather conditions.

Three size options help to ensure you find the most comfortable riding position.

It is a practical, comfortable and reliable option for regular city commuters.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The 2019 model has been upgraded to feature a higher-performing Bosch motor over the previous Brose version.   Bosch motors are known for being slightly noisier than some other models. While it is very efficient, it could frustrate some riders looking for a tranquil riding experience.

It may have a pretty high-end specification, but it also comes with a higher price point.  Some people, on a more limited budget, looking for a similar model, may opt for the IZIP. Raleigh and IZIP are made by the same company and have a lot of similar qualities, but the IZIP is considerably cheaper.

Verdict

Raleigh are known for their reliability and after-sales support.  This very functional road bike is on the more expensive side, though, and there are other models which offer a similar specification for a lower price.

FASTEST ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN BIKE

#7. Juiced Bikes RipCurrent S

juiced ripcurrent s fast emtb

Specs

Motor750 Watt Bafang Geared Hub Motor
BatteryLG Chem, 52 Volt, 624 wh Battery
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance100 miles
BrakesHydraulic Disc Brakes
Charging Time5-7 hours
Drive Train9 Speed Shimano Cassette
Weight75.5 lbs
Price$2,299

What We Loved

A lot of the other bikes we have reviewed for their speed have been road bikes.  The RipCurrent S is a fat bike style. The wider tires and suspension means it will be more versatile for covering different terrain and it’s very comfortable.

Despite the price, is it has a surprisingly high-end specification.  You are getting hydraulic brakes, a very powerful motor that will help power you up hills, a 624w battery for going the distance, and comfortable suspension.

Hydraulic brakes are needed on such a heavy bike, and the Star-Union ones provided here are effective.

Another bike with throttle assist option, so if you are doing some hilly off-roading, this can be a beneficial addition.

It is available in 3 size options to help you find the most comfortable riding position.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This bike is a bit of a brick.  It is the heaviest we have reviewed.  While a lot of this is because of the tire style, large battery and solid frame, it will not be the best choice for zippy commuting.

The weight and frame style means it is better suited for using if you are likely to be dealing with a variety of terrain.  You shouldn’t expect extra fast acceleration or maneuverability.

Verdict

For a comfortable and versatile ride, the RipCurrent ticks the boxes.  If you are looking for something quick of the block and easy to transport, then you may be better opting for a different model.
