Electric Skateboards have soared in popularity in recent years, and it means that there are now a whole host of models available on the market.

It can be confusing, knowing which one will be best for you. You will have to take into account your experience, riding style, weight, and the type of terrain you plan to use it on.

Skateboarding off-road is much more challenging than the likes of off-road electric mountain biking. Handling rougher terrain and keeping your balance can be tricky, given the hands-free style and low center of gravity.

Some models are designed to handle rougher terrain. Don’t expect an e-skateboard to manage the trails you could on an e-bike or even an electric scooter.

There are not as many models that are designed to be used off-road. Those that can usually have a more powerful battery and motor, better flex, more robust and supportive wheels, and they will tend to be more expensive.

This article aims to provide some guidance on a range of electric skateboards that will cope with off-roading.

We will outline the pros and cons of several models to allow you to make a more informed choice about a model that could be right for you.

Reviews of the Best Off-Road Electric Boards

EDITOR’S CHOICE

#1. MaxFind FF Plus

maxfind ff plus

Specs

MotorDual 1200 Watts motors
BatterySamsung 36V, 4.4Ah
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed25 mph
Max Distance11 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Skateboard Weight24 lbs

What We Loved

MaxFind might not have the established brand name like Raldey or Evolve, and they may not look quite as sophisticated either, but their boards are well made and packed with high-spec features without costing the earth.  Their FF Plus is an all-terrain model with a lot of nifty aspects.

The 1200w dual motors are reliable and pack a serious punch in terms of acceleration and torque.

The range on this board isn’t the most generous, but there’s the option to purchase an additional one or two 6AH Samsung batteries.  This increases the maximum range to an impressive 42 or 63 miles in total. Replacing the battery is really easy to do, and it means if you carry a spare one, this could appeal for long-range riders.  Even with the additional two batteries, the FF Plus still works out more affordable than the Evolve Bamboo we review later on.

Unusually, the battery pack and the motor have waterproof qualities, so if you ride after a downpour, you won’t have to worry if you hit a puddle that hasn’t dried out.

The oversized wheels and wide carbon fiber deck also help to ensure a smooth, stable and comfortable ride when you head off-road.

Of all the boards, the FF Plus has the ability to tackle the toughest inclines.  It can cope with gradients of up to 35%!  This is noteworthy if you live in an area known for its hills.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This Chinese produced board lacks the sophistication in design that you get with the Raldey and the Evolve boards.  It doesn’t look as slick, and the battery pack is not integrated into the board the way it is on some of the pricier models (although, at least, this makes it easy to swap the battery if you do buy a spare).

The wheels aren’t pneumatic either.  While this means you don’t have to worry about punctures, they don’t provide as much shock absorption when you’re heading onto rougher terrain.

If you’re just opting for the main model, without the additional battery packs, the range isn’t the most impressive either.  If you’re tackling hills and tough terrain, you’re not likely to get anywhere near the maximum of 11 miles, and this could prove to be frustratingly restrictive for some riders.

Overall Verdict

For the price, the MaxFind FF Plus has a lot of plus points, so we think it is the best overall for MOST riders, but it could prove to be limiting in terms of comfort and range for more experienced or adventurous riders.

VERY FAST OFF-ROAD ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD

#2. Raldey Carbon AT V.2

raldey carbon at v2

Specs

MotorDual 1500w motors
Battery14Ah 36V SANYO GA
Maximum Speed28.5 mph
Max Distance19 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Skateboard Weight25.5 lbs

What We Loved

This Raldey board is a good all-rounder. Compared to the MaxFind FF Plus, which is the same price point, it offers more power, speed, comfort and range.

It has powerful 1500-watt dual motors, impressive torque and acceleration, and it can go the distance.  Plus, it can cope with gradients of up to 30%.

The wide tires and trunk make for a really comfortable riding experience. It handles hills with ease too, and the power of this model means it’s another one that can hit impressively high speeds.

It has a more generous maximum weight capacity than any of the other boards reviewed too, and this makes it appealing for heavier riders.

The carbon fiber frame is very robust, but it’s also reasonably lightweight.  This model also features double kingpin trucks which help to ensure really fluid turning ability.

With the Carbon AT V2, Raldey have also added a honeycomb foam structure to the board deck.  This is just a small upgrade, but it adds a bit of comfort underfoot and gives you a more secure footing.

Why it Might Not Work For You

For beginner riders, the speed and acceleration capabilities of this board could prove intimidating, and you may not need to opt for such a powerful model.

This is another one that doesn’t have pneumatic, air-filled tires. While this means you don’t have to worry about punctures, it doesn’t offer as smooth a riding experience.

Overall Verdict

This is a high-performing but slightly more affordable off-road electric skateboard that will suit heavier and experienced riders.

evolve gtr all terrain

Specs

MotorDual 1500 watt motors
Battery14AH Samsung Lithium Ion battery
Charging Time4-5 hours
Maximum Speed22 mph
Max Distance19 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Skateboard Weight23.5 lbs

What We Loved

Evolve are one of the industry leaders in electric skateboard development. When you select one of their boards, you know you’re getting something that is designed to last and will ride extremely well.

As well as being functional, their boards also look seriously slick too. Some all-terrain models look clunky and cumbersome; not this baby!

A lot of electric skateboards have solid rubber tires. This Evolve board has large air-filled tires, and this helps provide a much more comfortable riding experience, absorbing a lot of the shocks that come from riding on rougher terrain.  They’re also very grippy, and this helps to provide additional stability.

The remote on this model is excellent, very ergonomic and with good connectivity. It’s rare for there to be glitches, which boosts confidence when riding.

The 3000 watts of power from the dual brushless motors provide a real kick of acceleration, and it handles most hills with ease. This extra power is needed to propel you forward on less smooth surfaces too.

This model has decent top speeds and range. Be aware, however, that when riding on rough terrain it’ll be harder to reach these and you should expect things to be slightly slower than on smooth surfaces.

This is a good thing really, riding at the top speed of 22mph would be asking for trouble on a rough trail.

The deck is made from 3 ply bamboo and is very streamlined, but it’s also exceptionally robust. It should have great longevity; even if you do put it through it paces on hard terrain.  It’s slightly more flexible than the carbon fiber models, and this can be good for promoting smooth carving.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Despite the price, this all-terrain model from Evolve doesn’t have the ability to cope with such steep inclines as the likes of the MaxFind FF Plus.  It can only handle up to 25% gradients.

While this is a very advanced model, it is the most expensive of all those we reviewed. If you’re on a budget or trying out an e-skateboard for the first time, this would be a pretty hefty investment.

The Evolve skateboards aren’t designed for heavier riders. Most, like this model, only has a maximum load capacity of 220 lbs.

The Bamboo deck, while helpful for carving, doesn’t offer as much control when riding at speed as the stiffer carbon fiber varieties will.

Overall Verdict

If you don’t mind investing a lot of money, you’ll get a reliable, robust and high-performing electric skateboard in the Evolve GTR All Terrain. It handles well on all surfaces, including those rougher trails.

FAST, LIGHT, AFFORDABLE

#4. Raldey MT V.3

raldey mt v3

Specs

Motor Dual 1500 watt motors
Battery36V 7Ah
Charging Time3 – 4 hours
Maximum Speed29 mph
Max Distance12 miles
Max Capacity240 lbs
Skateboard Weight19 lbs

What We Loved

For an entry-level electric skateboard that will allow you to try some off-roading, you can’t go wrong with the Raldey MT V3.  It’s affordable, fast and the lightest of all the boards we’ve reviewed.

Surprisingly, despite the price, this board still has impressive power and the most generous top speed of all the boards we’ve reviewed. For newbie boarders, you’ll have to watch you don’t get too carried away!

Why it Might Not Work For You

This board has a maple deck.  It doesn’t have the flex of the materials used on the more expensive boards, and this isn’t ideal when taking it onto bumpier terrain.

The board isn’t as wide, and the wheels aren’t as big as some of the other models, and this will also impact how well it does in terms of stability and comfort on tougher terrain too.

The MT V3 doesn’t have the generous range of the more expensive Raldey model we reviewed, or the Evolve either.  At just 11 miles maximum, this could be limiting for adventurous riders.

Overall Verdict

Although the Raldey MT V3 doesn’t have the flex, stability and serious off-road capabilities of some of the more expensive models, for the price, it still offers excellent value for money.

off road electric skateboard conversion kit

Specs

Motor1650 watt single motor
BatteryNot included
Maximum Speed25 mph

What We Loved

If you want to convert your skateboard into an electric version capable of off-roading, then this kit from L-Faster could be worth considering.

Be aware, though, that it’s not a complete kit. There is no battery provided, and this would have to be bought separately.

The 1650 watt motor offers plenty of power, and this means that it’ll handle rougher terrain like grass, hard-packed sand and gravel with ease.

It also comes with wide, grippy pneumatic tires. This means that it’ll help to provide a more comfortable riding experience by absorbing some of the shocks from the bumps of rougher terrain.

Why it Might Not Work For You

If your deck is not robust and designed to handle the rougher treatment it’ll receive from off-roading, it would not be a worthwhile investment. Longboards designed for sweeping carving with a lot of flex in the skateboard decks may not be robust enough.

This is only a partial kit, and it doesn’t come with the battery or battery compartment. This may appeal, however, to people that want to buy a battery that will allow them crazy far range capabilities instead of being restricted to what a more complete kit provides.

We aren’t convinced about what sort of after-sales support you might get if you have any problems with the components, even before you start working with them. L-Faster state “This is DIY product, we will try our best to make it perfect, but if it has a little flaw that don’t affect its work, hope you can understand, and if you don’t accept this, please don’t buy this item, thank you very much.”. This could set off warning bells for some people and should be taken into consideration before purchasing.

Overall Verdict

If you’re up for a challenge and don’t mind doing a little research and putting in some work to fit it, then this electric conversion kit could be a worthwhile investment.  Your board will have to be high quality and in good condition. The deck should be robust enough to handle any off-roading you plan to do.

What Are the Laws Relating to Electric Skateboard Use?

The laws regarding the use of electric skateboards, including all-terrain models, are a bit like those for most Personal Electric Vehicles – confusing!

Depending on the country you live in, they can vary greatly. In the United States, they can even be different depending on what state you are living in.

California, for example, has specific legislation in place for the use of electric skateboards. Some states don’t currently have any in place at all yet.

Always do your research before purchasing your e-skateboard. You want to ensure you will be able to use it in the way you want to.

Also be aware that the laws are a moving feast, and what you can do at the moment may not be what you are allowed to do in the future.

Check out our reviews of the best electric skateboards for teens and kids.

Always Be Safe and Courteous

Wherever you are based, be sensible and respectful when you are riding your electric skateboard.

A lot of personal electric vehicle riders get a bad rap for riding too fast and without respect for pedestrians or other road users.

Make sure that you only travel at high speeds once you have the experience and confidence to do so. Don’t ride at high speeds in very busy areas, keep off the sidewalks and don’t forget your protective gear.

A helmet is a must, but you should also consider using extra protective gear, including knee and elbow pads and gloves.

When you are riding on rougher, off-road terrain, the chances of you hitting a bump and losing your balance are much higher.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, be sensible with your speeds. Also make sure you select a model that has better suspension, wheel support and flex in the deck to handle the terrain more effectively.

Electric Skateboards and Plane Regulations

Skateboards appeal to a lot of people in terms of their portability. Some people want to take them with them on holiday.

You should be aware that not all e-skateboards are allowed to be taken on a plane, and they usually always have to go in the hold.

If your skateboard has a battery that is over 160WH in strength, then you won’t be able to take it with you.

Sometimes, even for batteries under this strength, you may find the individual airline may not be keen to take them.

You should always check in advance of booking your flight what the airline policy is to avoid any disappointment.
