Electric Skateboards have soared in popularity in recent years, and it means that there are now a whole host of models available on the market.

It can be confusing, knowing which one will be best for you. You will have to take into account your experience, riding style, weight, and the type of terrain you plan to use it on.

Skateboarding off-road is much more challenging than the likes of off-road electric mountain biking. Handling rougher terrain and keeping your balance can be tricky, given the hands-free style and low center of gravity.

Some models are designed to handle rougher terrain. Don’t expect an e-skateboard to manage the trails you could on an e-bike or even an electric scooter.

There are not as many models that are designed to be used off-road. Those that can usually have a more powerful battery and motor, better flex, more robust and supportive wheels, and they will tend to be more expensive.

This article aims to provide some guidance on a range of electric skateboards that will cope with off-roading.

We will outline the pros and cons of several models to allow you to make a more informed choice about a model that could be right for you.

Reviews of the Best Off-Road Electric Boards

Evolve Carbon GT

Specs

Motor1500 watt dual motor (3000 watt total)
Battery36v, 14AH Samsung Lithium Ion battery
Charging Time5 hours
Maximum Speed22 mph
Max Distance19 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Skateboard Weight21 lbs

What We Loved

Evolve are one of the industry leaders in electric skateboard development. When you select one of their boards, you know you are getting something that is designed to last and will ride extremely well.

As well as being functional, their boards also look seriously slick too. Some all-terrain models look clunky and cumbersome; not this baby!

A lot of electric skateboards have solid rubber tires.

This Evolve board has large air-filled tires, and this helps provide a much more comfortable riding experience, absorbing a lot of the shocks that come from riding on rougher terrain.

They are also very grippy, and this helps to provide additional stability.

The remote on this model is excellent, very ergonomic and with good connectivity. It is rare for there to be glitches, which boosts confidence when riding.

It features a useful and clear LED screen that displays battery status, speed mode and mileage.

The 3000 watts of power from the dual brushless motors provide a real kick of acceleration, and it handles hills with ease. This extra power is needed to propel you forward on less smooth surfaces too.

This model has decent top speeds and range. Be aware, however, that when riding on rough terrain it will be harder to reach these and you should expect things to be slightly slower than on smooth surfaces.

This is a good thing really, riding at the top speed of 22mph would be asking for trouble on a rough trail.

It is also helpful that the skateboard has four speed settings. This makes it easier for beginner riders to get used to slower speeds before ramping things up gradually as confidence and experience grows.

The deck is made from carbon fiber and is very streamlined, but it is also exceptionally robust. It should have great longevity; even if you do put it through it paces on hard terrain.

In terms of portability, off-road electric skateboards are always going to be on the heavier side, but this model is the lightest we reviewed, at just 21lbs.

This makes it one of the easiest to move around in between rides.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The carbon fiber deck is light and very robust, but it doesn’t have as much flex as some of the wood decks do.

Although the pneumatic tires help to absorb bumps, the ride could be even more comfortable if there was a little extra flex. This would help absorb some of the hammerings you get when on less smooth surfaces.

While this is a very advanced model, it is the most expensive of all those we reviewed. If you are on a budget or trying out an e-skateboard for the first time, this would be a pretty hefty investment.

The Evolve skateboards are not designed for heavier riders. Most, like this model, only has a maximum load capacity of 220 lbs.

Despite the high price tag, the Evolve models don’t come with a connective app or built-in lights.

Neither of these compromises the riding experience, but it is just a shame that you don’t get these nice extras when you are shelling out so much money.

Overall Verdict

If you don’t mind investing a lot of money, you will get a reliable, robust and high-performing electric skateboard in the Evolve Carbon GT All-Terrain. It handles well on all surfaces, including those rougher trails.

Wave Street 2000 Watt Electric Off-Road Skateboard

Specs

Motor2000 watt motor
Battery36v, 11Ah Lithium Ion Battery Pack
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed18.6 mph
Max Distance10 miles
Max Capacity285 lbs
Skateboard Weight30 lbs

What We Loved

At almost half the price of the Evolve Carbon GT All-Terrain, you still get a decent electric skateboard in the Wave Model.

The top speeds may not be as crazy-fast as some models. At 18.6 mph; this is plenty fast enough for most riders, especially if you plan to take it off-road.

It also has wide, air-filled tires which are really a bonus for absorbing the bumps you will tackle on rougher terrain.

These, plus the shock absorber built into the frame, and the flexible Canadian Maple deck all help to provide a pretty smooth riding experience.

Despite the motor being less powerful than the Evolve models, at 2000 watts of motor power, it still has enough punch to accelerate you up some pretty steep inclines.

The Wave Street can also cope with up to 285 lbs in weight, more generous than a lot of electric skateboards, and this makes it a good choice for heavier riders.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The Wave street is not going to win any prizes for its design. It doesn’t look as sleek or cool as the Evolve models.

If you are looking to do long-distance riding, don’t pick this model. It has a maximum range of just 10 miles, a lot less than most of the other models we have reviewed.

If you are a heavy rider and you are maxing out the top speeds, this range would obviously drop considerably too.

If you are looking for a portable e-skateboard, the Wave Street would not be the model to select either.

It comes in at a hefty 30lbs, and it gets a bit cumbersome if you have to carry it up a flight of stairs or move it around a lot in between rides.

Overall Verdict

The Wave Street is a more affordable off-road capable electric skateboard that still has a decent punch of power.

Don’t expect a sleek or lightweight design though, and it is not a great choice for riders that like to do long-distance riding.

OUTSTORM 31MPH Off Road Electric Skateboard

Specs

Motor3300 w dual brushless motor
Battery36v, 11Ah lithium-ion
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed31 mph
Max Distance19 miles
Max Capacity330 lbs
Skateboard Weight32 lbs

What We Loved

Outstorm are developing a reputation for producing fast, reliable and powerful off-road capable Personal Electric Vehicles, and their electric skateboard is no exception.

This baby is seriously fast. It is way faster than any of the other models reviewed, with a crazy top speed of 31mph. This is for serious and experienced riders only.

It also packs a punch when it comes to power and acceleration. Its 3300-watt motor is the most powerful of those we reviewed too.

This means it can handle hills with ease, and it helps it maintain decent speeds even over the rougher terrain.

It is suited to long-distance riders, with its 19 mile top range capacity, and, with an extremely generous 330 lbs weight capacity, it is perfect for heavier riders too.

This board also comes with removable bindings which are unusual in electric skateboards, especially at this price.

Not everyone will want to use them, but if you want to feel a bit more stable on the board, or you are used to snowboarding, you might find these beneficial.

The Canadian Maple deck, shock absorbers and large pneumatic tires all help provide a comfortable riding experience.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Experienced riders may love the power this thing has, but, for a lot of riders, it could just be too much.

Being able to get over 30 mph on a skateboard is crazy fast and, especially when riding off-road, high speeds can be so dangerous.

If you are not an experienced rider or one that loves pushing things to the max, you may be better opting for a slightly less powerful model.

It also only has three speed modes, instead of the four the Evolve has. For something this powerful, it might have actually benefited having more speed settings.

It would mean the jump between the power you are getting at each level would be less extreme.

This board is a brick. Weighing in at 32 lbs, it is one of the heaviest of all those we reviewed, and it is really cumbersome to carry around in between riding.

The maple deck is very robust, but it doesn’t have much flex at all, especially when just starting out. This makes it less easy to do sweeping carving, if this is how you like to ride.

Overall Verdict

An affordable and very powerful all-terrain skateboard. A great option for experienced speed demon riders, but perhaps an unnecessary, and potentially dangerous amount of power for newbie riders.

RALDEY GEN2 Electric Skateboard

Specs

Motor2 x 1500 w dual motor
Battery36V, 14Ah Lithium-Ion battery pack
Charging Time5 hours
Maximum Speed28 mph
Max Distance19 miles
Max Capacity300 lbs
Skateboard Weight26 lbs

What We Loved

This Raldey board is a good all-rounder. It has a powerful 3000-watt motor, impressive torque and acceleration, and it can go the distance.

Compared to the likes of the Evolve Carbon Fiber model, it offers good value for money.

The shock absorbers and wide tires and trunk make for a really comfortable riding experience. It handles hills with ease too, and the power of this model means it is another one that can hit impressively high speeds.

It has a generous maximum weight capacity too, and this makes it appealing for heavier riders.

The carbon fiber frame is very robust, but it is also reasonably lightweight.

That means that the board, despite being wide and with over-sized tires, doesn’t come in as heavy as some off-road electric skateboards. It isn’t light, but at 26lbs it is below average.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Like the Outstorm, for beginner riders, the speed and acceleration capabilities of this board could prove intimidating, and you may not need to opt for such a powerful model.

The wheels are not air-filled. While this means you don’t have to worry about punctures, it doesn’t offer as smooth a riding experience as those boards with more absorbent pneumatic tires.

Overall Verdict

This is a high-performing but slightly more affordable off-road electric skateboard that will suit heavier and experienced riders.

BUDGET OFF-ROAD CAPABLE MODEL

#5. MotoTec 1600W Dirt Electric Skateboard

MotoTec 1600W Dirt Electric Skateboard Dual Motor

Specs

Motor1600 w dual watt motor
Battery36V 14Ah
Charging Time5 hours
Maximum Speed22 mph
Max Distance10 miles
Max Capacity260 lbs
Skateboard Weight71 lbs

What We Loved

So, we know that decent all-terrain electric skateboards cost more than a standard e-board. They have more powerful motors, and they need a more robust frame and tires.

The Mototec is a much more affordable option for those of you keen to try a little off-roading.

The power is not as great as all the others we reviewed, but at 1600 watts, it is still enough to manage some light off-roading. It can also still manage some inclines without losing too much power.

It has a generous maximum weight capacity, which will suit heavier riders, and it can still reach decent top speeds.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Given the much lower than average price tag, you are going to have to expect some compromises.

The biggest compromise is in the weight of this model. It is an absolute tank and clocks in on the scales at a whopping 71 lbs!

While this makes it feel more robust and stable, it is really difficult and awkward to lift up. If you have to carry it up a flight of stairs it will certainly help develop your muscles.

The weight of the model also means it is more difficult to maneuver than a lot of others we have reviewed. It has a massive turning circle, and it is not designed for sweeping, smooth carving.

If you are trying to negotiate tight spots, you may have to get off and lift it up. This is doubly frustrating given the massive weight of the board too.

The tires are extreme knobby grip ones that work well on rougher terrain, but they don’t provide such a nice riding experience on smoother surfaces.

There is too much traction, and it can make for a rougher ride.

The battery pack is hulking and is very low to the ground, this means it doesn’t manage on some of the rougher surfaces as smoothly as some of the other models.

It also means there is a greater chance of it getting damaged if you hit a hard bump at high speeds.

If you are a long-distance rider, this model is not going to appeal; it only has a maximum range of 10 miles.

The design and parts are not as high-quality as those of the other models we reviewed, and so you shouldn’t expect the same sort of longevity from this less expensive board.

Overall Verdict

If you are on a very limited budget and new to off-road electric skateboarding, this could be a good introductory model. It still has decent power and fast top speeds.

It is also built like an absolute brick, though. As a result, it is limited in its maneuverability and portability.

Serious riders would be better off investing a little more money to get a more long-lasting and versatile board.

What Are the Laws Relating to Electric Skateboard Use?

The laws regarding the use of electric skateboards, including all-terrain models, are a bit like those for most Personal Electric Vehicles – confusing!

Depending on the country you live in, they can vary greatly. In the United States, they can even be different depending on what state you are living in.

California, for example, has specific legislation in place for the use of electric skateboards. Some states don’t currently have any in place at all yet.

Always do your research before purchasing your e-skateboard. You want to ensure you will be able to use it in the way you want to.

Also be aware that the laws are a moving feast, and what you can do at the moment may not be what you are allowed to do in the future.

Always Be Safe and Courteous

Wherever you are based, be sensible and respectful when you are riding your electric skateboard.

A lot of personal electric vehicle riders get a bad rap for riding too fast and without respect for pedestrians or other road users.

Make sure that you only travel at high speeds once you have the experience and confidence to do so. Don’t ride at high speeds in very busy areas, keep off the sidewalks and don’t forget your protective gear.

A helmet is a must, but you should also consider using extra protective gear, including knee and elbow pads and gloves.

When you are riding on rougher, off-road terrain, the chances of you hitting a bump and losing your balance are much higher.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, be sensible with your speeds. Also make sure you select a model that has better suspension, wheel support and flex in the deck to handle the terrain more effectively.

Electric Skateboards and Plane Regulations

Skateboards appeal to a lot of people in terms of their portability. Some people want to take them with them on holiday.

You should be aware that not all e-skateboards are allowed to be taken on a plane, and they usually always have to go in the hold.

If your skateboard has a battery that is over 160WH in strength, then you won’t be able to take it with you.

Sometimes, even for batteries under this strength, you may find the individual airline may not be keen to take them.

You should always check in advance of booking your flight what the airline policy is to avoid any disappointment.
