In recent years some of the bigger brands have started developing more environmentally friendly and quieter electric motor models. The electric models are also often easier to learn how to ride as you don’t have a clutch or complicated starting procedures. You do not have to deal with combustible fuels, and they require less maintenance and are not as dirty or smelly.
Like a lot of professional dirt bikes, the e-bike versions can be pretty pricey.
If your kid has expressed an interest in getting into the world of dirt biking, the kid’s models can be a lot more affordable. They don’t have the same power capabilities, but that makes them a safer alternative.

Know the Laws
The laws around dirt biking are generally more strict for the powerful motor models that adults would be using.
You should always read up on these regulations for your state as they can vary depending on what part of the country you are in. Even some of the kids’ models will fall under some of these regulations so you should always check them out.
Most dirt bikes are only able to be used on specific off-road riding tracks. For them to be made road legal, they will have to go through various licensing, checks and adjustments.
Of course, for kids, they shouldn’t be riding them on the roads anyway, and you should stress the importance of this to them for safety and legal reasons.
Safety is a Priority
Dirt biking can be a great hobby for kids, but they do need to take precautions to minimize any risk.
Even kids electric dirt bikes can be fast and powerful. Kids need careful introductions to dirt biking. They need to be given experienced instruction on how and where to use them. They should also be supervised if under a certain age, and they should always be wearing protective clothing.
Unless your kid is an expert, taking them straight away to an official supercross style race track is not the best idea. These are often designed to allow riders to perform jumps and stunts. Starting on smoother trails with little other traffic is a safer option.
We can’t overemphasize the importance of the right protective gear. Of course, a helmet goes without saying. If you are getting up to top speeds on rough tracks, then gloves, knee and elbow paws, and appropriate footwear should also be used.
Make sure you select a bike that is the right size and power capability for your child. If they are too small for the model, it could make it more difficult to ride safely and effectively. If the power is too much for their experience level, then they are much more likely to get into trouble.

What We Loved
Razor is the most well-established of all the electric dirt bikes for kids manufacturers. They are also well known for their electric scooters.
The MX650 model is the most powerful option, so it is perfect for older riders or those that are gaining experience and are ready to tackle higher speeds and power.
They also have less powerful models, like the Razor Mx350, if you are looking to introduce them to a lower power level initially.
Of all the products we have reviewed, it has the most powerful motor, at 650w. The capability of this motor shouldn’t be underestimated. It can get your kid up to speeds of 17 mph without too much effort. This means they really do need to be riding it on the appropriate trails and with suitable protective gear and supervision.
The motor power and the generous maximum weight capacity of 220lbs, mean it would even be suitable for some lightweight adults. Don’t expect it to hold its charge for long or tackle hills the way it would for a lighter rider though. It is not going to get you whizzing around all that fast.
While Razor advertises this product as being suitable for ages 16 and over, most people use this for kids that are a lot younger. You could easily see a 10-year old using the bike and having fun, providing they get appropriate guidance and supervision.
It has pretty responsive rear and front mechanical dual disc brakes that work well even when traveling at top speeds.
It has dual suspension and large pneumatic tires, so it provides a comfortable riding experience even when on rougher terrain.
Why it Might Not Work For You
None of these kids dirt bikes have a substantial range capacity, and the Razor model is no exception. You can expect a maximum of 40 minutes of continuous use, or up to 10 miles if it is ridden in an economical style, on flat surfaces with a light rider.
I am always surprised that Razor continues to use lead-based batteries rather than lithium-ion varieties. It means that their longevity is much reduced and there are often problems with the battery not holding a charge on purchase.
To maximize lead-based battery life, you should follow the steps below:
- Don’t leave the bike stored for prolonged periods anywhere that will expose it to extremely hot or cold temperatures
- Don’t leave it plugged in for long periods after it has reached full charge
- Try to minimize the number of times you run it down to wholly drained and instead do quick top-ups instead
Despite Razor being a huge and well-established company, it is disappointing that they do not have a good reputation in terms of after-sales support and customer service.
This is a heavy-duty model, and it could make it a challenge for some of the smaller riders to move it around when they are not riding it.
Overall Verdict
The Razor MX650 is one of the most powerful of the electric dirt bikes for young riders that we have reviewed, and it offers a comfortable riding experience. It is just a shame that they rely on inferior lead-based batteries to power them up.

What We Loved
The Burromax does not have quite as powerful a motor as the Razor model we reviewed. If it is transporting a light kid, however, then it will still not have any trouble reaching its top speed of 17mph.
While your child is getting used to riding on the Burromax, it has two variable speed settings. You could set it for a maximum speed of 8mph initially to minimize them getting too carried away.
We like the slightly wider tires that the Burromax has too, and this gives it a very stable and grippy feel when being ridden. This, along with the dual suspension, means it provides a very smooth riding experience.
It has a more generous maximum weight capacity than the Razor, but be aware that when riding off-road it will be most effective with riders under 150lbs. The adjustable riser handlebars also make it ideal if a taller rider is using it.
Although it is only a 24v, rather than 36v battery, it is nice that it is lithium-ion rather than lead-based. This means there are fewer issues with it holding the charge and it will last longer, and you are likely to get a better range too.
Because it uses a lithium-ion battery, it also means that they charge time is way faster than the Razor. Your child will still be able to get out and enjoy a ride on the day they get the bike, rather than being frustrated having to wait 12 hours just to get their first shot!
It is considerably lighter than the Razor too at just over 50lbs, and this makes it easier for a younger child to maneuver it when they are not riding.
Why it Might Not Work For You
If the rider already has experience dirt biking, you may find they would appreciate a higher maximum power transfer motor. This will allow them to have faster acceleration and higher speeds. It is perfect for younger riders or those just starting out, though.
Overall Verdict
For a starter electric mini cross or dirt bike, the Burromax could be a perfect choice. It offers good value for money, a smooth ride and features a high-quality, efficient battery.

What We Loved
The most significant selling point for the Monster Moto is that it comes with a 1000w motor. This means it will handle inclines and a heavier weight a bit more efficiently than some of the other models we reviewed. It also means it will reach its top speed of 17mph more easily.
It looks the business too. This motocross-style bike has a wide and comfortable saddle and a solid frame.
The Monster Moto is the most affordable of the older rider bikes that we reviewed. If you are on a limited budget, this may appeal.
Why it Might Not Work For You
The mechanics of this bike are not as reliable as the Burromax. People have had issues with the throttle, the chain, and, especially, the battery.
It is another one that operates using a lead-acid battery system. As explained in our Razor review, this is not as reliable as the lithium-ion ones and can be prone to running out of juice more quickly.
There is no suspension on the Monster Moto. It does have super-wide tires that do absorb some of the shocks from any bumps. Given this is designed and marketed as a ‘rugged outdoors’ bike, it is somewhat disappointing.
Not only does it mean it is not as comfortable a ride, but it can also impact on the longevity of the frame too. It will inevitably take more of a pounding.
This is by far the heaviest model of all those we have reviewed. For little riders, it is going to make it challenging to move around and hard to lift if it topples over while stationary.
Despite it having a hulking frame, it only has a maximum weight capacity of 185lbs. For taller and heavier teens, it is not going to manage as well, especially if it is being used on rougher terrain.
None of these dirt bikes for kids have the generous warranties of the big electric bike brands. Most of them come with just a 90-day warranty. The Monster Moto only has a 60-day warranty, which is even more disappointing.
Overall Verdict
This bike does have a powerful motor and a very affordable price, but it is not as reliable as the Burromax, and it is cumbersome. The ride won’t be as smooth as the Razor or the Burromax given it lacks suspension.

What We Loved
The Say Yeah is a recent introduction to the mini dirt bike market. It has a decent 500w motor and, unlike a lot of other mini dirt bikes, it has 3-speed settings for acceleration control through its twist-grip throttle. Using the lower setting can be useful for younger riders or for first-time dirt bike riders to allow them to get used to the feel of the bike and its power.
Compared to some of the other models, it is reasonably lightweight too. This makes it easier for the younger kids to maneuver it around even when they are not riding.
Unlike the Monster Moto, this bike has decent front and rear suspension. With two front and one rear shock absorber. This combined with the 10-inch pneumatic knobby tires means you are in for a comfy ride, even on rougher terrain. It also has responsive front and rear disc brakes.
Why it Might Not Work For You
The maximum weight capacity for this dirt bike is only 150lbs, so it is not suited to heavier riders.
The battery is also just a disappointing 24volts so you are not going to get much time before you will need to get it charged again. This is a shame given this is not the cheapest of the bikes we reviewed.
Overall Verdict
If you want to introduce your kid to the power an electric dirt bike gradually, the Say Yeah may appeal. The 3 speed modes allow you to work up to the top speeds on an incremental scale.
The low power battery is a bit of a letdown, though, as this is not a budget model by any means.

What We Loved
This single speed model is suited to pre or early school-age children. It is perfect if you want to let them have a bit of a gentle introduction to the world of dirt biking.
You don’t have to worry about them getting into trouble at high speeds. The bike has a maximum top speed of just 2.5 miles. You also don’t have to worry about crazy high torque or acceleration throwing your child off balance.
This is perfect for helping building confidence and teaching your child to get a feel for the power of an electric bike.
It also has removable stabilizing side wheels, and this can help to build up the confidence of a younger rider that has not fully got their balance yet.
Because it is only just over 17lbs, it makes it easy for your child to move this around, even when they are not riding it. You don’t have to worry about it toppling and trapping them because of the weight.
Why it Might Not Work For You
It has a maximum weight capacity of 55lbs, so it really is just for the smallest of riders. At the maximum weight capacity be aware it will slow the bike down to a total snail’s pace too.
The battery and the motor are piddling. This will be best used on smoother surfaces to allow a chance to experience the feel of being on a motor-powered vehicle, but it is not suited to off-roading.
The hard plastic wheels wouldn’t handle those sort of surfaces either. Even grass will be a struggle and will really drain the battery. Teach your child to use the bike on safe, smooth surfaces.
Overall Verdict
For preschoolers, this could be the perfect introduction to the world of electric bikes. Just don’t expect any high specification.
It is designed to be slow, safe and gentle. Shame that the battery is not a bit more reliable and efficient but, other than this, it offers overall good value for money.
