Electric scooters have soared in popularity over the last few years. They can be a relatively inexpensive, eco-friendly and speedy way to commute without having too much exertion. They are also much more portable than an electric bike.

Their popularity has meant that there is an increasing amount of choice for those looking to invest in one.

One area that is still sadly lacking so much choice is the adult electric scooter for heavier riders. A lot of models will not hold more than 200lbs, with most managing up to 220lbs maximum.

Here we aim to provide a selection of the best electric scooters that will work for riders over 250lbs.

Be Safe: Laws Surrounding Electric Scooters for Adults

Motorized Scooter laws are complex and changing fast. They vary greatly depending on the state you are based in, with some not even having any as yet.

Always do your research and make sure that you know what your state allows. Some will allow them only up to a certain motor size or speed capacity, some only on certain roads or trails. Some allow them on the sidewalk, but with a speed restriction.

And don’t forget to be safe.

Electric scooter accidents are growing in numbers. Riding at top speed is not for the faint-hearted. Make sure you wear protective gear and that you are also respectful to the public.

There are a lot of negative perceptions surrounding e-scooter riders, and if you are courteous and sensible, you can help to reduce these views.

Reviews of the Best Electric Scooters For Heavier Riders

So how did we classify the scooters reviewed below as being the best for heavy riders?

We have selected five of the best electric scooters for adults that are suited for heavier riders.

The power of the motor and battery are important for helping to give the acceleration needed when the scooter is carrying extra weight.

We also looked at the weight of the scooter itself. A lot of scooters with a greater weight capacity are more cumbersome.

As with all our buyers guides, we also looked at the comfort, stability and reliability of each of the scooters.

EDITOR’S CHOICE

#1. QIEWA Q Power

QIEWA QPOWER Duble Motors Off Road Scooter

Specs

Motor3200 watt dual motor
Battery48 Volts 26 Ah lithium-ion battery
Charging Time15 hours
Maximum Speed50 mph
Maximum Distance60 miles
Maximum CapacityOver 400 lbs
Scooter Weight81.5 lbs

What We Loved

For adrenaline junkies, speed demons and long-distance riders that have a generous budget, the Qiewa QPower is an impressive monster of a scooter.

It has the potential to reach speeds up to a heart-raising 50 miles per hour, because of the dual-motor that provides a total of 3200 watts of high torque power. This is pretty much unheard of with other e-scooter models.

It can also travel up to a maximum range of 60 miles, depending on your weight and the power setting used. If the dual motors are engaged a lot, this will drain your battery a lot faster. It’s best only to engage them when you need them on steep inclines.

The acceleration on this thing is immense and, unlike a lot of other electric scooters for heavy riders, it powers up hills when you engage both motors.

It’s also possible to take this scooter off-road. The wide and exceedingly grippy tires offer excellent comfort and stability, and there’s front and rear suspension, so you’re in for a smooth ride.

The scooter is very robust and offers a lot of stability because of its weight. The hydraulic braking system is also very responsive, and they only need a light touch.

The Qiewa QPower comes with a full one year warranty, except for on the battery which has a six month one.

Some may argue that this is the best electric scooter for big people. It claims to be able to handle over 400lbs in weight, more than any other model we reviewed. Because of the motor power and speed capability it has, this means that, even at its full weight capacity, you’ll still be able to generate a decent speed.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This scooter is, by far, the most expensive we’ve reviewed. Unless you know you’re going to use this regularly as your main mode of transport, tackle a lot of hills, or you’re over 300lbs, then you may not need to splash out on this.

When we say this is a monster, we are also talking about the bulk of this model. At over 80lbs it’s seriously heavy duty. While you have to expect some bulk considering the engine size and the sturdier frame construction needed to handle the high speeds, it means it isn’t easy to transport. It does fold down, but it’s far too heavy for carrying any distance.

It does have a one year warranty, but if you need replacement parts, these have to be shipped from Asia. So, you could face a long delay in getting up and running again.

It’s more complex to assemble than some of the other models too, and the instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired. You can’t just pick up the phone to customer support either as they’re only available by email.

The speed this scooter can reach could be intimidating for some riders, and rightly so. Taking it up to its top speeds is a seriously risky proposition, and we wouldn’t recommend it out on busy roads. Their lesser-powered model, the Qiewa Q1Hummer, may be a prefered choice if you don’t want to have such daunting speed capabilities.

The fact that this electric scooter for heavy adults is capable of such high top speeds may limit where it can be used in some states. If you plan to use it for commuting, you should double-check if there are any restrictions in your region before purchasing it.

Verdict

This heavy duty electric scooter still offers fantastic power even when it’s being used by the heaviest of riders. It also provides a smooth and stable ride – even on rough terrain.

It doesn’t come cheap though, and you may be restricted on where you can use it. Also, if you’re looking for a light model for commuting, this isn’t the one to opt for. It’s built like a brick!

BEST VALUE FOR MONEY ELECTRIC SCOOTER FOR HEAVY ADULTS

#2. HORIZON

fluid free ride horizon

Specs

Motor500w motor
BatteryLithium-ion 48V 10.4Ah
Maximum Speed23 mph
Maximum Distance20 miles
Maximum Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight40 lbs

What We Loved

If you’re searching for an affordable electric scooter for heavy riders that is well-made and practical, you can’t go far wrong with the Fluid Free Ride Horizon.  Not the cheapest on the market, it’s considerably less expensive than the likes of the Inokim OxO and the Qiewa QPower.

Despite this, it still has some great features.  It has a perfectly practical 23 mph maximum top speed.  The 500w motor may not be the most powerful, but for commutes without too many hills it’ll be perfect.

It’s also great that the Horizon comes complete with front and rear suspension as this will help to ensure a smooth and comfortable riding experience.

The rear brake is just a drum variety, but it does the job given you won’t be hitting the crazy top speeds capable with the Qiewa QPower.  The additional regenerative braking is also handy.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although this scooter has a generous 265lb maximum weight capacity, as far as electric scooters for big guys goes, it isn’t up there with the likes of the Qiewa QPower.

Also, with its 500w motor, the Horizon won’t be the best choice for those that live in a hilly area.

Verdict

Despite not having the unusually generous weight capacity of the Qiewa QPoer, the Horizon is still capable of carrying over 250lbs.  It’s also affordable, practical and well-built.  Just don’t expect anything too fast or far-ranging.

GOOD ENTRY-LEVEL ELECTRIC SCOOTER FOR HEAVY RIDERS

#3. Turboant X7 Pro

turboant x7 pro

Specs

Motor350w motor
Battery10 Ah
Charging Time6 hours
Maximum Speed20 mph
Maximum Distance30 miles
Maximum Capacity275 lbs
Scooter Weight33 lbs

What We Loved

If you’re looking for a lightweight, portable and affordable electric scooter for big people, the Turboant X7 Pro could be worth throwing in the mix for consideration.  Despite not weighing too much, it’s very robust too, with a sturdy and thick t-bar stem.

It might not have the power or speed of some of the models we’ve reviewed, but it doesn’t cost the earth, and the 350w motor will be perfectly adequate for straightforward short commutes and cruising.

The scooter folds down easily and compactly and only weighs 33lbs, so it won’t be too awkward if you have to take it on public transport.

The wide 10-inch tubeless pneumatic tires are also great for shock absorption, especially when carrying a heavier load.  Plus, they are less likely to puncture than standard pneumatic varieties.

It’s also a bonus that the Turboant has a triple-redundant braking system.  You can feel confident in your stopping distances with the combined options of an electronic brake, a disc brake and a foot brake.

Unlike a lot of electric scooters, you can also remove the battery to recharge it or do it while it’s still integrated into the scooter frame.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Given the price point of the Turboant X7 Pro, you’ll have to expect some compromises in terms of range and power.  There can be a bit of lag when you first accelerate and, with its 350w motor, this isn’t going to be a scooter for use in an area where you have to tackle a lot of hills.

Verdict

If you’re a heavier rider on a limited budget and don’t mind not having super boosted power, the Turboat X7 Pro Electric Scooter could be worth considering.

MOST VERSATILE ELECTRIC SCOOTER FOR HEAVY RIDERS

#4. Inokim OxO

Inokim OxO

Specs

MotorTwo silent dual 1000W brushless motors
Battery60V 26Ah LG Li-ion battery
Charging Time12-14 hours
Maximum Speed40 mph
Maximum Distance50 miles
Maximum Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight74 lbs

What We Loved

Like the Qiewa QPower, this scooter from Inokim is fast, powerful and goes the distance.  Inokim have a fantastic reputation and are widely considered one of the leading manufacturers in electric scooters.

It may be the most expensive of all the models reviewed here, but you really are getting a robust, reliable and high-spec product.

This scooter is well-suited to heavier riders and has a maximum weight capacity over 250lbs.  It’s a multi-purpose all-rounder and will work for commuting and cruising. With its unique adjustable height suspension, responsive hydraulic brakes, and wide pneumatic tires, it can be used for off-roading too.

The large battery means you can get up to an impressive 50 miles out of one charge and the 2000 watts of power mean it glides up inclines with ease.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The OxO, like the Qiewa QPower is a bit of a beast.  It weighs 74lbs and isn’t going to be the most portable scooter.  Unlike the QPower, however, this isn’t the best electric scooter for the heaviest adults.  The 265lb maximum weight capacity is more generous than your average electric scooter, but it can’t compete with the 400lb capacity of the QPower.

Another little gripe is that the OxO, with its huge battery capacity, takes up to 14 hours to reach full charge.  Not ideal if you have a long commute and want to recharge during your working day!

If you’re on a limited budget, this scooter won’t be for you.  Coming in at over $2,500, it’s the most expensive of all of the electric scooters for heavy adults we’ve reviewed by a considerable amount.

Verdict

This scooter is perfect for heavier riders that are looking for reliability, a brand with a solid reputation, and plenty of punch and staying power.  Just be aware that comes with a punchy price tag too!

PORTABLE AND LIGHTWEIGHT ESCOOTER FOR HEAVY RIDERS

#5. Glion Dolly

glion dolly

Specs

Motor100250W (Peak 600 w) brushless, gearless hub electric motor0W wheel hub motor
BatteryLG Lithium-Ion 36 V, 7.8 Ah battery pack
Charging Time3.5 hours
Maximum Speed15 mph
Maximum Distance15 miles
Maximum Capacity255 lbs
Scooter Weight28 lbs

What We Loved

Often the lightest and most portable electric scooters don’t have a very generous maximum weight capacity.  This means they aren’t the best choice for heavier riders.  The Glion Dolly, however, still has a reasonably generous 255lbs maximum weight capacity, while also being the lightest of the models we’ve reviewed.

At just 28lbs, it still has a robust frame that folds down without a lot of fuss.  The additional dolly handle also gives you the option to pull the scooter along behind you when it isn’t in use rather than having to lift it up all the time.

It’s great that, once in a standing position, it’s very stable and secure and doesn’t need additional support.

All these qualities make it a good choice for commuters that need to hop on and off public transport or store their scooter in a restricted space in the office.

The Glion Dolly has solid, airless tires and you won’t need to worry about them puncturing or needing to be pumped up.

Their upgraded model also now has front suspension which means you won’t feel the bumps in the road surface as much and your scooter won’t take such a beating.

The manufacturers also upgraded the braking system too.  The Dolly now has an additional rear fender press brake.  Along with the electric braking system, you can be reassured of responsiveness when you’re riding at higher speeds.

Despite being the most affordable of all those reviewed, there are a few other nice touches with this model too.  The frame is well-built and designed to last, no matter how often it’s folded down, and it has a solid and supportive kickstand too.  The handlebars can also be adjusted to three different heights, so it’ll work for even the tallest riders.

It’s reassuring that Glion have a stellar reputation for their after-sales support.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Of course, given how much cheaper the Glion is than the rest of the scooters we’ve reviewed here, you’ll have to expect some compromises.

The biggest of these is that it only has a small 250w motor.  For heavier riders, this means that powerful acceleration will be distinctly lacking and it’s going to really struggle if you have to tackle steep inclines.

While we’re on the topic of the acceleration – it isn’t as responsive as some models, and there can be a bit of a lag before it kicks in.  This can take a bit of getting used to!

If you have a long commute, the Glion Dolly battery will be limiting.  It only has a maximum 15-mile range, and with a heavier rider on board, this is likely to be reduced considerably.  The battery indicator isn’t very accurate either – only showing full, medium and low – so you’ll need to be careful you don’t get caught short.

Verdict

A good entry-level commuter electric scooter, the Dolly is lightweight and portable.  Just don’t expect it to take you all that far fast.
