There has been an explosion in the use of electric scooters for adults in the last two years globally. In the United States, hire services have seen unprecedented demand, and the number of models available to buy has grown at an impressive rate.

Electric scooters appeal to a lot of people as they are a fun, eco-friendly and very portable transport option.

They are also considerably cheaper and easier to maintain than electric bikes and can still reach high speeds.

Maneuvering through traffic with ease, you don’t need to worry about parking!

Since there are so many brands out there, and not all of them are amazing, we took the time to review and rate our top 10 best electric scooters for this year.

How To Choose The Right eScooter

By considering where, why and how you plan to use your electric scooter it will help you narrow down what might be suited to you the most.

If you plan to use it for short commutes, you will want something lightweight and portable, and the speed and range may not be such a big issue.

If you want to do some light off-roading or longer distances you will need to consider things like suspension and motor and battery power more carefully.

Know the Laws Surrounding Electric Scooters for Adults

The laws around electric scooters are continually evolving and can be complex. They can vary vastly depending on the state you are based in. Some states don’t even have any specific legislation in place yet. The sudden extreme rise in their popularity has caught most off-guard and unprepared.

Some states allow electric scooters on designated cycle paths and trails only. Some allow them on roads too, depending on the speeds they can reach. Some allow them on sidewalks (although this is a contentious issue), others allow this but with speed restrictions.

Many states will only allow you to ride an adult electric scooter if you are over 16, and some over 18 years of age, and some stipulate the use of a helmet.

Do your research, and make sure that you know what the laws are for the areas you will be riding in.

Reviews of the Best Electric Scooters For Adults

The sudden rise in e-scooters popularity means that higher specification models are becoming more common and the prices are starting to be more competitive.

It also, unfortunately, means that a lot of cheap, poorly made models are being thrown together by manufacturers keen to get in on a lucrative market.

It can be hard to wade through the ever-increasing number of products available and know which ones are offering good value and functionality. A lot of technical speak is used, often without really telling you anything helpful.

Because there is so much choice, it can be overwhelming looking at all the different models and trying to work out which one will be the best for you.

We have selected ten different motorized scooters for adults to review. Each has its own specific advantages in terms of features, usability and performance, which we will clearly outline.

BEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER FOR COMMUTING

#1. Glion Dolly

Glion Dolly Foldable Lightweight Adult Electric Scooter

Specs

Motor250W (Peak 600 w) brushless, gearless hub electric motor
BatteryLG Lithium-Ion 36 V, 7.8 Ah
Charge Time3.5 hours
Max Speed15 mph
Max Distance15 miles
BrakesElectronic anti-lock brakes and rear fender foot-activated press brake
Max Capacity255 lbs
Scooter Weight28 lbs

What We Loved

This is a mid-priced electric scooter that would work well for short commuting and leisure riding. It reaches a sensible 15 mph top speed, and this is more than enough for safe and efficient journeys. If you haven’t ridden an electric scooter before, trust us, going above 20mph is not for the faint-hearted!

The main selling points of this model are the fact that it folds down and it weighs under 30lbs, making it a perfect option for easily transporting and storing.

You will have no problems taking this on the tube or sliding it underneath your desk. It is very compact once folded and it can stand up without any support and even fit in a standard train luggage rack. It also has a handle that makes it easier to pull this along when folded down.

The battery is quick to charge and has a reasonably generous estimated maximum distance range of 15 miles.

The handlebars have three height adjustment settings, meaning that it will work for even the tallest of riders. They kickstand is very sturdy too, you are not going to be worried about the scooter toppling.

For those of you that are not keen on getting your hands dirty, this scooter comes fully assembled, so once it is charged, you can get straight out on it.

The fenders on this model work well and help prevent a lot of splash back in wet weather conditions

Glion have a reputation for having very solid after-sales customer support.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Like a lot of the less expensive models, this only features a 250w motor. If you are a heavier rider or you want to tackle a lot of hilly routes, then you would probably be better off selecting a more powerful option. It really struggles when negotiating any sort of incline.

The accelerator on the Glion is not the most responsive, and there can be a slight delay in feeling the power kick in. This can take some getting used to.

This model only has an electric braking system and it can be quite harsh. Some of the better models also have mechanical brakes too and this can provide additional peace of mind.

The Glion doesn’t come with an associated app. Something that would have been nice for the price bracket this falls into and it doesn’t have a speedometer so you can’t know the speed you are reaching for certain. The battery indicator is pretty basic too. It only shows as low, medium or full.

After regular use, the screws can start to come loose. It is always a good idea to perform regular maintenance and check if any need tightening periodically.

It has solid tires and, while these won’t puncture or need pumped up, they don’t offer as much of a buffer on bumps.

The range on the scooter is disappointing. Glion claim it can reach up to 15 miles but, unless the rider is exceptionally light and riding with very low throttle, it would struggle to get anywhere near this.

Verdict

This scooter offers pretty decent value for money.

Its folding capability and its light weight mean it has real practical advantages for regular commuters contending with busy public transport.

It is just a shame that the motor is not more powerful as this is the biggest disadvantage of this model.

This commuting model is best used on flat surfaces for short trips.

BEST MOTORIZED SCOOTER FOR ADULTS WITH LIMITED MOBILITY

#2. Razor EcoSmart Metro

Razor EcoSmart Metro Electric Scooter

Specs

Motor500-watt motor
Battery36V (three 12V) sealed lead acid, rechargeable
Charge Time6 hours
Max Speed18 mph
Max Distance10 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Scooter Weight67 lbs

What We Loved

This scooter has a large and comfortable removable seat, so it is a great and affordable option for those with mobility issues.

It has a rear rack and removable basket so, unlike most standard electric scooters, it has somewhere to store gear.

It has a powerful 500w motor, and this helps propel you along effectively, even if you are carrying supplies or negotiating a slight hilly section.

This hits speeds of up to 18mph and, to be honest, why would you need to go faster?

The large 16” air-filled tires contribute towards giving this scooter a very smooth ride.

It has a wide and comfortable deck.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is one of the most cumbersome scooters we reviewed, coming in at whopping 67lbs. If you do have to lift the scooter at any point, this is not going to make it easy.

It doesn’t fold down, and it has a much bigger frame than other standard electric scooters. It can even be a challenge to fit this in the trunk of some cars. It is not a great option in terms of portability. So, if you have to take your scooter on public transport or lift it up stairs regularly, a more compact option would be a better choice.

The lead powered battery takes up to 6 hours to fully charge, and it will not last as long as a lithium-ion version. Be prepared for having to shell out for a new battery at some point, if you use this scooter a lot.

Although this is a more substantial model and it has a rear rack, it still only has a stated maximum weight capacity of 220lbs. This is not the best choice for heavier riders, especially if you also want to store more weighty items in the rack.

The on/off switch and charger port is low down on the frame and, for those with mobility restrictions, this could prove to be impractical and frustrating.

The battery indicator is not reliable and you could get caught short if you don’t keep an eye on the distances you are doing in between charges.

The rear brake on the Razor is not terribly responsive but, given it doesn’t reach crazy top speeds, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Despite Razor being one of the biggest and most well-established electric scooter manufacturers, they don’t have the best reputation for their after-sales support. Also, their 90-day warranty is not exactly generous.

Verdict

If you are looking for an electric scooter that works if you have limited mobility, then the Razor EcoSmart Metro would be worth considering.

Do keep in mind that it is cumbersome and difficult to transport and that the battery is not the most efficient.

VERSATILE ALL-ROUNDER

#3. Segway Ninebot ES4

Segway Ninebot ES4 Folding Electric Kick Scooter with Second Battery

Specs

Motor350w (peak 800w)
BatteryLithium Ion 36 VDC, 374 Wh
Charge Time7 hours
Max Speed19 mph
Max Distance28 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Scooter Weight31 lbs

What We Loved

This scooter is one of the lighter models that we have reviewed at just over 30lbs. It’s also foldable too. This means it will be easy to hop on and off public transport without it feeling too cumbersome.

If you have a longer commute, this could be the scooter for you. With a dual lithium-ion battery pack, its maximum distance is a very impressive 28 miles.

You don’t have to worry about punctures with the solid tires, and the frame is well made and built to last, as you would expect given the good reputation of Segway.

You will feel the difference when you start to tackle the hills with this model in comparison to those we reviewed with a less powerful motor. It provides much better acceleration, although you will still notice it does noticeably slow on the ascents.

You get a smooth and comfortable riding experience, probably in large part because this scooter has front and rear wheel suspension.

The Ninebot app is widely regarded as one of the most versatile on the electric scooter market, so there are lots of features for you to play around with. You can check out your riding history, the mileage and the distance you have covered. It even lets you lock the scooter, and it will advise you if anyone is trying to move it.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Coming in at a higher price point, this scooter is not for anyone on a budget. If you are a first-time electric scooter rider, you may be better trialling out a less expensive model. Or you could arrange a test ride to make sure you think this will be a worthwhile investment.

You need to be organized with your charging planning as it can take up to 7 hours to get a full charge. This could be an issue if you have a long there and back commute to work on your scooter.

It is just a very minor thing, but the kickstand is not as sturdy as the likes of the Glion, which seems like such an easy thing to fix when you consider the overall specification.

Verdict

If you don’t have a restricted budget and you are looking for a model with a higher specification, you can’t really go wrong with this scooter.

It offers fantastic additional power for distance riding and lots of cool app tracking features.

BEST ESCOOTER FOR HIGH SPEEDS

#4. NANROBOT D4+ Pro

NANROBOT-D4-Pro-High-Speed-Electric-Scooter-10-inch-Tires

Specs

MotorDual Motor 1000W x 2
BatteryLithium-Ion 52V-23AH
Charge Time8 hours
Max Speed40 mph
Max Distance40 miles
Max Capacity330 lbs
Scooter Weight70 lbs

What We Loved

If you have access to private paths and roads, this scooter could become a favorite toy. It can get up to an incredible 40mph!

This shouldn’t be taken lightly, though. Hitting a bump at those speeds could easily cause a rider to lose control or balance, and it could result in a sobering injury.

It is seriously powerful, and it does the distance. Having an e-scooter than can manage up to 40 miles on a single charge is pretty unusual. Part of this power comes from the unique dual hub motors which are both 1000w each. The acceleration is incredible, and top speeds can be reached in just a matter of seconds.

The slightly wider than standard tires and the full suspension mean that it still feels like a relatively smooth ride at top speeds. It could even possibly handle some less extreme trails, unlike most other electric scooters.

It is capable of carrying the heaviest load of all the scooters we reviewed. For heavier riders, it would certainly be worth considering.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This really is for serious pro, experienced riders. Hitting the top speeds on a lightweight vehicle like this could be pretty hairy. You may also be restricted to private land usage depending on the local state legislation. Do your research to make sure you are not disappointed if you can’t take this out on public roads or pathways.

Having the double motor, a larger battery and extra suspension mean that this was the heaviest of all the models we reviewed. You don’t notice it when it is powering up to the high speeds, but it is not a good portable commuter scooter, even though it folds down.

The mechanical disc brakes are not quite as responsive as we would have liked for such a high specification model. They need a fair bit of extra pressure, especially when slowing from high speeds. While the electronic braking system should be reasonably reliable, having the extra reassurance, given the price point, would be a bonus.

Not a scooter for riders on a budget. While the high specification and riding experience does justify the price tag, it was one of the more expensive models we reviewed.

Verdict

For experienced scooter riders with a generous budget and who enjoy high-speed riding, you can’t get much better than the Nanrobot D4+.

You may be restricted as to where you can ride such a powerful model, though. Real care needs to be taken too, as coming off at high speeds on a scooter can be deadly.

QUICK TO CHARGE AND VERSATILE

#5. Magnum IMax S1+

Magnum Premium S1+ Adult Electric Scooter

Specs

MotorRear Mounted Gearless Direct Drive Hub 48V 500W
Battery48V / 10AH / 480WH
Charge Time3 hours
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance20 miles
Max Capacity230 lbs
Scooter Weight36 lbs

What We Loved

This has a pretty decent motor and smooth and fast acceleration. It copes with ascents better than some of the lower-powered motor models that have been reviewed.

The lithium-ion battery charges up very quickly. You only have to wait 3 hours for it to be at capacity.

The large air-inflated 10-inch tires help to absorb any bumps and, along with the motor, making it a comfortably smooth ride.

This fold-down scooter is not what you would call light, but for the motor size, it is still manageable and portable enough to use for commuting.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Considering how expensive this is, it is disappointing that it does not feature any suspension features.

The brakes are not as responsive as those of some of the other higher priced models.

Verdict

While the Magnum IMax S1 is a versatile all-rounder, it doesn’t seem to offer the same value for money as some other models we have reviewed.

If you don’t mind splashing out though, it is still a functional little scooter, although it doesn’t really stand out from the crowd.

BEST CHEAP ELECTRIC SCOOTER

#6. Razor E300

razor e300 scooter

Specs

Motor250w motor
Battery24V (two 12V) sealed lead acid battery system
Charge Time6 hours
Max Speed15 mph
Max Distance10 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Scooter Weight19.5 lbs

What We Loved

For those of you that are on a very restricted budget, the Razor E300 could make a great entry-level option. It is by far the cheapest of all the models we have reviewed.

This is also the lightest of all the models by a considerable margin too. Perfect if you have to carry it on and off public transport.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The entry-level price point also means you get an entry-level specification. This scooter is basic. It is not as nippy as some other models, with a top speed of 15 miles per hour. Because it only has a small 250w motor, it means that it can be slow to reach those top speeds, and it goes at a snail’s pace going up hills.

Both the Razor models we reviewed have the most measly of all the range capacities too. If you have a long commute, you would be a lot better off with a different model.

Razor have downgraded their tires on this model. They are not as wide as they were previously, and this means that you do not get as much support when negotiating rougher road surfaces.

This basic model doesn’t have any fancy LCD screen features. It means you can’t even tell how much battery power you have left. You have to plan carefully and know the scooters capacity well to make sure you don’t get caught short. It also means there is only one-speed option.

Although it is a really light model, it doesn’t fold down. This can be restricted if you have to board a busy tube or store it in small space in the office or in the car trunk.

Because it has lead-acid batteries rather than lithium-ion ones, you should expect their life expectancy to be a lot less.

Verdict

This entry-level model may be worth a shot if you are on a very restricted budget.

Be aware that it is a very basic model with a combination of limitations not found on most of the other models we have reviewed.

SAFEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER

#7. Boosted REV

Specs

Motor1500 W dual-wheel drive and proprietary powertrain
BatteryPremium lithium cells enclosed in an impressive IPX7 waterproof casing
Charge Time3 hours
Max Speed24 mph
Max Distance22 miles
Max Capacity250 lbs
Scooter Weight46 lbs

What We Loved

This is one of our favorite models we reviewed in terms of comfort, power and endurance.

The Boosted Rev has been specifically developed with safety in mind. Because riding at high speeds on a flimsy electric scooter comes with a lot of risks, Boosted have worked to ensure that this model is very stable. It handles well and has responsive brakes.

It has a solid and substantial frame. The standing deck is designed to be low to the ground to support better balance. It has been designed with durability in mind, and it should last much longer than standard e-scooter frames will.

If you are using the scooter for longer distances, it has a generous 22-mile maximum range, and it is also pretty powerful, thanks to 1500w motor. It maintains a decent speed on hills, unlike a lot of the less powerful models we have featured.

This scooter is also unique in that it has three brake systems that can be utilized. Like most e-scooters, it has an electric brake, then a mechanical rear brake, but it also has an additional manual stomp brake on the rear wheel too. The braking system is exceptionally responsive, and this provides added confidence when riding at higher speeds.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This scooter is expensive. Of course, it is built to last and has a very high specification, but if you are on a budget, it would likely be a stretch.

Given the general high specification, we were disappointed that the scooter did not have any suspension. It does have a sturdy frame, and fat, shock-absorbing tires, though. This means it is still comfortable when riding, but it just seemed a shame that, at this price, this feature was missing.

While the scooter does fold down, it was one of the heavier models we reviewed at 46lbs. Not great for humphing on and off busy public transport. To be fair to Boosted, this is a compromise given it features a very robust frame and large motor and battery.

Verdict

If you are looking for a safe, reliable and long-running electric scooter, you can’t go wrong with the Boosted Rev.

It may be expensive but if you are going to use it regularly, it could be a great investment.

BEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER FOR HEAVIER RIDERS

#8. Zumaround MaxiZüm

zumaround maxizum

Specs

Motor250-watt motor, brushless, geared frictionless hub
BatteryTwo 36V 8.8Amh Lithium-ion batteries
Charge TimeNot Stated
Max Speed21 mph
Max Distance38 miles
Max Capacity375 lbs
Scooter Weight44 lbs

What We Loved

This scooter is well-suited to long distance commuters or those that just enjoy being out for the day. The bigger frame means that it is able to accomodate a double 36V lithium-ion battery and it can take you up to 38 miles at its maximum range.

It is also perfect for heavier riders. It can carry the most weight of all the scooters we reviewed. It is unusual to find a model that can accommodate over 350lbs and this one has an impressive maximum weight capacity of 375lbs. The handle bars also extend enough that even people as tall as 6 foot 5 inches will not feel hunched when riding.

The large frame and 26” pnuematic tires mean that it is a very stable scooter that rides very smoothly.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Apart from the distance that this model can travel and the weights that it can accommodate, it is probably not the most practical or functional choices.

For starters, the frame is massive, and it doesn’t fold down. This means it is not ideal for transporting or lifting. It is almost more bike-like in its build.

There is no suspension, meaning that, if you take it up to higher speeds, it is not the most comfortable or smooth of rides.

Getting it up to the top speed of 21mph is going to be a challenge. Despite its size, this scooter only has a 250w battery. It struggles to get up to speed with a heavier rider and crawls up any sort of incline.

Considering the basic specification, the MaxiZüm has a whopping MRP of $1650. In our opinion, it doesn’t great value for money.

Verdict

If you are a heavier rider and you are looking for a scooter than can go a bit further, it may be one to consider.

Keep in mind, however, that the general specification is not that great overall, especially when you take into account the high price point. It lacks power in the motor, isn’t particularly portable and doesn’t afford the most comfortable ride.

BEST OFF-ROAD ELECTRIC SCOOTER

#9. Mercane WideWheel

Specs

MotorDual 500w motor
BatteryLithium-ion 48V, 13.2Ah battery
Charge Time6 hours
Max Speed25 mph
Max Distance20 – 30 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Scooter Weight50 lbs

What We Loved

Electric Scooters are not really designed for the off-road experience. If you are looking for one to take on the trails though, the Mercane WideWheel is probably the one to try it on.

It has two mighty 500w motors, and it has some serious oomph. It has one of the most responsive and powerful accelerations of the scooters we reviewed and even charges up hills without too much effort.

The 8 inch wide tires are extremely grippy. These, combined with the front and rear suspension, means it is suited to less smooth trails and is likely to last longer.

Why it Might Not Work For You

While this scooter does fold down easily, it still weighs in at 50lbs, so it is not a light commuting option. This best suits being thrown in the trunk of your car and being brought out for some adventure rides.

It is pretty pricey, but we think it offers good value for money. This is especially true when you compare it’s specification with some of the other pricey models we reviewed.

One thing we would have expected for such an expensive model, though, would have been a more interactive interface. It is pretty basic and doesn’t have all the great features the Segway model has.

Unfortunately, this scooter is not designed for heavier riders as it has a claimed maximum weight capacity of just 220lbs.

Verdict

For the adrenaline junkies out there that want to take their scooter off-road and up hills, the Mercane WideWheel is a fun and functional choice.

It offers plenty of power and a seriously smooth riding experience, although it does come with a higher than average price tag.

DECENT ENTRY-LEVEL ESCOOTER

#10. MEGAWHEELS S5

MEGAWHEELS-S5-Electric-Scooter

Specs

Motor250w motor
BatteryLithium Ion 36 V, 5.8 Ah
Charge Time4 hours
Max Speed15.5 mph
Max Distance13.6 miles
Max Capacity264 lbs
Scooter Weight27.5 lbs

What We Loved

This model was one of the least expensive models we reviewed. It costs a bit more than the Razor E300, but you do get a more long-lasting lithium-ion battery rather than a lead-based one. It can carry a heavier rider too.

It might be a bit heavier than the other budget option, the Razor E300, but it is still lighter than most of the other models we reviewed. It at least folds down, unlike the Razor, so it makes it a more portable option, especially if you take it on busy public transport.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The MegaWheels is not going to win any awards for aesthetics. It is a functional but not very sleek looking model.

You do get what you pay for, and you can’t expect anything too impressive for the price bracket. This scooter only has a 250w motor so don’t expect punchy acceleration or any decent speed when tackling an incline.

It doesn’t handle any bumps in the road like some of the suspension fitted models.

If you have a long commute or just enjoy getting out for a decent ride, you may be disappointed as this scooter only has a 13-mile maximum distance capacity.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for something with just a little more scope than the most budget offering, the Razor E300, then this does offer that for a little extra money.

It is still a basic model, though.

Great for first-time e-scooter riders that are using it for occasional hobby riding or short commutes, but not the best choice for a more serious e-scooter enthusiast.
