5 Best Electric Beach Cruiser Bikes in 2019 – Reviews and Ratings of the Top e-Cruisers

Bikes that are referred to as simply Cruisers, or sometimes Beach Cruisers, are designed to be comfortable, easy and fun.

They don’t need to have the technical specification that some endurance road bikes or electric mountain bikes do. They are not meant for tackling rough terrain, long distances and lots of steep ascents.

These bikes are designed with straight forward commutes and relaxing level surface cycles in mind.

Below, we’ll walk through our top 5 reviews of the best electric beach cruisers.

Why Beach Cruisers are the Perfect eBike

If you are newbie cyclist or just new to e-bikes altogether, then an e-Cruiser could be the perfect choice for you.

Providing you are not an adrenaline junkie that wants to push yourself to the limit, these bikes are versatile, comfortable and simple to use.

If you plan to take leisurely rides along country lanes, or you are lucky to have a wide beach promenade or a straight forward cycle as a commuter, then opting to purchase an electric cruiser could be a great choice.

For one thing, they are generally less expensive than their multi-geared, high powered e-mtb or road racing siblings. They are also a lot easier to use as their interface and power options are a lot more straightforward.

They have been developed with comfort in mind and the saddle, frame shape and handlebars are all designed to make your upright ride as relaxing as possible.

The frames are usually larger and heavier and are designed with stability in mind.

Their tires can often be wider, and more air-cushioned, and their handlebars tend to be positioned higher and closer to the rider.

The pedals are positioned to make it easy to stop and rest too — none of this balancing on your tiptoes or holding the bike over at an angle.

The benefits of an electric cruiser over a non-powered version is that if you do come across a bit of an incline, or you are tired after a long day at work, the motor can give that extra boost and save you overexerting yourself.

Plus there is nothing worse than turning up for the start of a day at work, covered in sweat!

When Not to Opt for an Electric Cruiser

If you plan to be doing a lot of off-roading, distance cycling, long commutes or you live or cycle in a very hilly region, then this would probably not be the best choice of e-bike to select. You would be better opting for a specific road or mountain e-bike.

If you are an advanced electric bike enthusiast, this simplicity and lack of versatility would likely frustrate you.

They are not designed for super-fast speeds or jumps in acceleration, and their heavier frames also mean that they are not as easy to maneuver or lift.

If you have to carry your bike up flights of stairs to an apartment or get it on a roof rack, it could be a significant effort!

All of the bikes we have reviewed weigh over 20kg. Check out our reviews of lightweight e-bikes if you are looking for something less bulky.

Be Aware of the Electric Bike Classes

Don’t forget to check the Class of the electric cruiser bike you are considering too. The laws vary depending on the country you are in. In Europe, e-bikes are generally not allowed to go above 15mph on their power-assist modes. In the United States, they can go up to 28mph. Within the country, however, some states don’t conform to the norm.

Check out the People For Bikes website, which is a handy resource for gaining a better understanding of these, sometimes nuanced, regulations.

In general, the Classes are broken down as follows within the United States:

Class 1 e-bikes

  • Max speed of 20mph
  • Pedal-assist motor only
  • In some areas, the motor can be no bigger than 250w
  • Generally no restrictions on where they can be used in the US

Class 2 e-bikes

  • Max speed of 20mph
  • Pedal-assist mode or thumb throttle function
  • Motor no greater than 750w

Class 3 e-bikes

  • Max speed 28mph (often referred to as speed pedelecs)
  • Pedal-assist function only
  • Motor no greater than 750w
  • There are restrictions in certain States on where these can be used – always check

Reviews of the Best Electric Beach Cruiser eBikes

We have selected five different electric powered beach cruisers to review. Each has its own specific advantages in terms of features, usability and performance. Some of the key criteria we looked at when we were reviewing include:

  • Value for money – Even the best electric bikes can vary significantly in their pricing. We look at a range of budgets and want to make sure that they are offering the best value for their price bracket
  • Motor efficiency – We compare the power, efficiency and level of smoothness of the motors.
  • Battery efficiency – We compare the batteries in terms of their efficiency, power and charging speeds
  • Overall performance – How do the bikes cope on the ascents and descents? What is the riding experience like, what is their suspension like? What is their weight capacity?
  • Reputation – How does the brand stack up against its competitors. Are they known for producing robust, high performing e-bikes?
IZIP E3 Vida Step-Thru

IZIP are part of the Accell Group who own a number of bike brands, including Raleigh. This means you are getting a model from a trusted brand.

Considering the price of the E3 Vida, you are getting a lot of bang for your buck, and this would be a great first-time electric cruiser option.

Specs

MotorBosch Active Line Plus 250W
BatteryBosch Powerpack 500Wh, DT Mount
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance53 miles
BrakesTektro Auriga Hydraulic Disc
Charging Time5 hours
Weight47 lbs
Drive Train9 Speed 1×9 Shimano Alivio Derailleur
Price$1,999

What We Loved

This bike, with its well-designed aluminum frame, is the lightest of all of those we reviewed. So if you have to carry it up or down stairs for storage, or you need to lift it onto a car roof rack, it could be the right choice.

It also offers excellent value for money. It is cheaper than the Raleigh Retroglide (these two brands are part of the same company) and, while it might not look as cool, it has a more powerful battery so it will travel a little further on one charge.

The Bosch electric motor is a mid-drive design so you get smoother transitions and its position is very discreet, and it helps to create more stability.

This bike is all about comfort. It has a soft, oversized saddle, high volume buffering tires from reputable brand Schwalbe, and hydraulic brakes for smooth and responsive control.

The bike comes in three sizes, so it will allow even the tallest riders to have a comfortable position on the bike.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The E3 Vida doesn’t have any suspension, and although the tires and saddles help to give you a smoother ride, it would not be great for handling any bigger lumps and bumps in the road.

The motor is only 250w, which is not as powerful as some of the others we reviewed. If you only plan to use it as it is designed – for leisurely, flat routes – then it will be adequate but, if you have to tackle hills regularly, you may be better opting for a model with a larger motor.

It is only a small thing but, unlike some of the other bikes reviewed here, this model doesn’t come with a rear rack installed. A lot of leisure riders find this a useful addition for carrying picnic supplies.

Verdict

With hydraulic brakes, good quality tires and a light alloy frame, this bike offers value for money.

Its mid-price point makes it an affordable choice for a new electric biker that doesn’t want to push their limits too much.

BEST BUDGET E-CRUISER

#2. Blix Sol Electric Cruiser

Blix Sol Electric Cruiser

If you are just entering the world of e-bikes or you are on a restricted budget, then the Sol Electric Cruiser, from Swedish company Blix, will serve you well.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2, pedal-assist and throttle option
MotorGeared, Rear hub-motor, 500W
BatterySamsung 48V / 14Ah
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance45 miles
BrakesTektro Mechanical Disc with 160mm Rotors
Charging Time7 hours
Weight64 lbs
Drive TrainShimano 7-speed
Price$1,699

What We Loved

Despite being a budget entry, this bike has a 500w motor, so it helps if you do have to tackle any hills. It also has a thumb rather than twist throttle assist function for giving you a helping hand, and it is very responsive. The motor allows for smooth transitions in speed, and this is a comfortable ride.

If you have mobility issues, this model has a very low step-thru frame, making it easy to mount and dismount.

It has seat post suspension, so this helps to absorb the impact of any bumps in the road.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The price means that there have to be some compromises. The mechanical brakes can be a bit sticky, and this bike is the heaviest of all those that we have reviewed, which can also impact on maneuverability and handling.

The bike doesn’t have any added suspension, so it can be a little bit of a more bumpy ride if you come across any unsmooth road surfaces.

This model only comes in one size option. This means that extra-tall riders may not find it so comfortable.

Verdict

For a first time electric e-bike purchase, you can’t go far wrong with the Blix Sol. It is a comfortable ride with a powerful motor and is very affordable.

It might not have such responsive brakes, and it is a bit on the heavy side, but for casual rides on flat surfaces, it will work well.

Raleigh Retroglide Royale iE Step Over

Raleigh are a long-established and very well known brand. Their bikes are known for being functional but stylish, and they are widely available across the United States.

This Retro-style Cruiser is a comfortable, straight forward model, perfect for lazy days down by the beach.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 1, pedal-assist
MotorBosch Active Line 250W
BatteryBosch Powerpack 400Wh
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance42 miles
BrakesTektro Hydraulic Disc 160mm
Charging Time4.5 hours
Weight54 lbs
Drive TrainShimano Acera 8 Speed
Price$2,299

What We Loved

The Retroglide looks very stylish. It has a retro vintage look about it and, if you are attracted to aesthetics, then you will be no doubt enjoy riding this model.

The motor is compatible with being used with throttle assistance and Raleigh offer an optional trigger throttle for just $50. This means, if you want to take it easy, you have the option to do this without it costing too much more.

The Retroglide originally only had mechanical disc brakes. It now has been upgraded to include hydraulic brakes. This makes for a smoother, more responsive ride if you are pushing it up to the top speeds.

The mid-drive motor offers a quieter ride, and its position means the handling and stability of the bike is good. It is also more efficient for those of you that do occasionally like to tackle some hills as part of your route.

The bike has nice extra touches like a cup holder and a rear rack.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Compared with some of the other models that we have reviewed, it doesn’t feel as if you are getting quite the same value for money.

It is a perfectly functional model and will be great for new riders, but it doesn’t have as powerful a motor or suspension as some of the cheaper models do. You are probably paying more to get the Raleigh name.

The motor is by TransX and is not as well-respected as the bigger brand names featured in this review like Bosch or Bafang. It may not stand the test of time as well.

It also has the lowest estimated maximum range, so if you want to go further afield, you might want to opt for a different model.

Verdict

If you are looking for a stylish leisure bike from a brand that offers good after-sales support, then this could be the bike for you.

It doesn’t offer as good value for money as some of the other models reviewed, but that doesn’t stop it from being a practical little runaround.

MOST VERSATILE ELECTRIC BEACH CRUISER

#4. Surface 604 Colt

surface 604 colt

Okay, so strictly speaking, the Surface 604 Colt is not a traditional beach cruiser. It is more of a hybrid bike. We wanted to include at least one bike that would work for flat leisure riders, but that also has a bit more versatility, should it be required.

This model is a great option as it is still not too expensive, but it has a lot of additional features and fittings that mean it could also be ridden off-road a bit.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2, pedal-assist and throttle option
Motor500w Bafang rear-mounted gearless direct drive hub motor
Battery48V 10.4Ah / 500Wh Samsung lithium battery
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance45 miles
BrakesTEKTRO Auriga hydraulic disk brakes
Charging Time5 hours
Weight10-speed SRAM X5
Drive Train55 lbs
Price$1,799

What We Loved

Despite it being at a very affordable price point, the design and specification of this bike are pretty impressive.

The Colt has a powerful 500w motor, which means that it will tackle hilly areas better than some of the other models reviewed.

Despite the price, it is a bonus that it has a hydraulic brake system. This means they are going to be responsive, and the stopping power will be more effective.

The bike, unlike a lot of e-cruisers, also has an adjustable suspension fork and this means that it will be more comfortable if you do decide to tackle any slightly rougher terrain. As with most cruisers, the saddle is gel-filled, with comfort in mind.

The bike comes with a rear-wheel rack, and this is handy if you want to transport a picnic or work supplies.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is still not designed for significant off-roading, for that, you would be better opting for a specific electric mountain bike.

Despite the decent motor, suspension and brakes, the tires are not the highest quality, and they don’t come with a puncture protection liner as many cruisers do.

Verdict

If you are looking for a bike that can handle ascents and rougher terrain more smoothly than a standard cruiser, then this affordable model with a reasonably high-quality specification could be a good choice.

It is perfect for a beginner rider, especially if you plan to push yourself.

This low frame, fat-tired cruiser has a unique design. If you want to draw attention to your ride, this will certainly achieve that.

It is easy to mount and dismount and would also be suitable for some gentle off-roading too.

Specs

Type of BikeClass 3, pedal-assist
MotorBafang 500W
BatteryPanasonic lithium-ion battery, 48 volts
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance45 miles
BrakesDisc brake (Radius)
Charging Time6 hours
Weight83 lbs
Price$2,295

What We Loved

The Cyclone looks the business and has a unique low-ride frame. You’ll stand out from the crowd, that’s for sure.

It hasn’t sacrificed design over aesthetics, though. It provides a very comfortable riding position and is easy to mount and dismount.

The fat tires not only absorb some of the shocks from any lumps and bumps, but they allow you to cover a wider variety of terrain compared to a traditional cruiser. You will be able to ride on snow and sand, and this bike even copes well on the less extreme bike trails.

It has a powerful 500w engine which helps you accelerate smoothly up any hills you may need to tackle. It is a mid-drive motor, unlike many of the others reviewed here.

This will also help if you are pedaling up any steep ascents, it creates a smoother ride, and it is also much more discreet than the rear or front wheel hub motor placements.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This bike is heavy. Way more substantial than any of the other bikes reviewed. This, combined with the fat tires mean it may seem sluggish in comparison to some of the other models, and this is even with the powerful 500w motor.

The weight and the extended frame also make it more of a challenge for moving and storing.

The mechanical disk brakes are also a little slow to react so care should be taken if traveling at high speeds, especially on any descents or rougher tracks.

The Cyclone is one of the more expensive Cruisers that we reviewed. It is likely the higher price tag relates to the unique design. If you want substance over style, you may be better opting for one of the less expensive models reviewed here.

Verdict

If you love eye-catching design, want a bike that can cope with a variety of terrain and has a lot of power, the Cyclone could be perfect.

It is pretty expensive though, weighs a lot, and the specification isn’t as top-notch as some of the other models we have reviewed.
