Since the early 2000s, e-bikes have grown rapidly in popularity. They are seen as an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative form of travel for commuters.

They also encourage individuals looking to gradually build up their fitness levels to get out there, when a normal pedal-powered bike might seem too daunting.

Plus, they help users go farther and faster than they might have been able to otherwise.

They were once universally sneered upon by the traditional cycling fraternity as being a ‘cheat’. Now they are being recognized for their benefits by serious riders too.

For those that love challenging themselves on tough downhill trails, using an e-bike can help them get back up to the top faster.

This allows them to get in more downhill runs and practice. They can also help allow long-distance riders to go even further by topping up with pedal-assist modes.

With every year that passes, the technology becomes more advanced and the prices more affordable, making these an accessible form of transport for the masses.

The number of brands branching out into this market is ever-increasing too. The amount of choice can be bewildering, especially for those new to the world of electric bikes.

In this article, we will review a range of widely available bikes to look at options that work for those on a budget, and those looking for something a little more specialized.

When considering an e-bike, you need to consider where and how you will be riding it. Off-roaders and heavier riders will need a more powerful motor and battery, and better suspension.

Commuters may not be so concerned about speed but may be looking for something lightweight and portable.

Reviews of the Best Electric Bikes

EDITOR’S CHOICE

#1. BULLS SIX50 E2 Street

BULLS SIX50 E2 Street

Specs

Type of BikeClass 3 (Speed Pedelec)
MotorBosch Performance Line Speed, Gen 2 350 watt hours
BatteryBosch lithium-ion, 36V/13.4 Ah/500 Wh Battery Pack
Charging Time4.5 hours
BrakesTektro Dorado Hydraulic Disc
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance120 miles
Bike Weight54 lbs
Max Weight Capacity275 lbs

What We Loved

The Bulls brand is fast becoming one of the industry leaders in electric bike production. The Six50 E 2 Street is a really versatile bike with a high specification.

What sets this bike apart from a lot of other models is its impressive range. It can take you up to a maximum of 120 miles.

This is way further than the average electric bike. It makes it a great option for long-distance commuting and enthusiastic road riders.

It also has an impressive top speed of 28 mph and good acceleration and torque. Of course, if you are riding at top speeds for prolonged periods, the range will be dramatically reduced.

The Tektro hydraulic brakes offer much more impressive stopping power and reliability than mechanical brakes. You will want this if you are taking the bike up to its top speeds.

It uses a mid-drive motor rather than a hub version. While it will require more maintenance, it means it is lighter, more stable and it is more efficient too.

The hybrid Kenda tires are 2.25 inches wide. This is wider than normal for a road bike and this, along with the high-quality suspension fork, means that you get a very comfortable riding experience.

It also means that the bike, while marketed as a road bike, can handle some light off-roading too. The versatility of this bike is part of what makes it so appealing.

The bike comes in four frame sizes, so you know you can select a size that will offer a perfect riding position, even for the tallest riders.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although not one of the most expensive models, it is still on the higher end of electric bike price ranges. It is not for someone on a budget and best for intermediate to experienced riders.

If you normally ride a traditional road bike with drop handlebars, you may find the wide, upright, mountain bike style handlebars take some getting used to.

It all comes down to personal preferences with this though.

It is also heavier than your average high-specification road bike, at 54 lbs. But, given it has the versatility also to handle some off-roading and has a large battery to help it go the distance, it is to be expected.

Overall Verdict

This is a versatile road bike, with a high specification, great performance, and the versatility to handle some off-roading.

What sets this bike apart is its fantastically generous maximum range capacity. Just don’t expect all this to come cheap!

BEST VALUE FOR MONEY MODEL

#2. IZIP E3 Dash

IZIP E3 Dash

Specs

Motor TranzX M16 Center Mount 350 W
Battery 48v, 8.7ah lithium-ion
Charging Time 5 hours
Brakes Tektro Hydraulic Disc
Max Speed 28 mph
Max Distance 35 miles
Bike Weight53 lbs

What We Loved

The IZIP brand from the reputable, larger company the Accell Group specialize in producing electric bikes with a decent specification at a fair and affordable price point.

If you are an entry-level rider looking for something you can grow into, or an intermediate rider on a restricted budget, this is a brand worth considering.

It is really refreshing to see an electric bike priced under $2,000 that features responsive hydraulic brakes. Usually, you would expect clunkier mechanical brakes.

The Rock Shock suspension fork and the wider than normal road tires ensure you get a pretty comfortable riding experience, even when trying a little light off-roading.

The mid-drive motor is more efficient at handling hills, and it helps the bike to remain more balanced.

Even though it is so affordably priced, it is still available in three frame sizes. This means it will work for even the tallest of riders.

The Accell Group, which owns IZIP, is a very well established and large company that provides good after-sales support.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The biggest downside for us when it comes to the IZIP E3 Dash Step Thru is that it has a pretty piddling range for a road bike.

It only manages between 35 – 40 miles maximum, and this will obviously be considerably less if you are riding it at top speed or in a hilly region.

It is not suited to riders that have a long commute, or that like to go on long leisurely journeys.

Overall Verdict

The IZIP E3 Dash really does offer excellent value for money. For a very affordable price point, you get a bike that looks nice, is pretty robust and has a lot of higher specification features.

This is a perfect road bike for shorter commutes and one that a beginner rider can grow into without having to spend too much.

BEST BUDGET ELECTRIC BIKE

#3. Ancheer Electric Mountain Bike

ANCHEER 2019 Pro Electric Mountain Bike

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2 (pedal-assist and throttle on demand)
Motor250 w, geared rear hub motor
Battery36V 12Ah lithium-ion battery
Charging Time6 hours
BrakesDual Mechanical Disc Brakes
Max Speed15 mph
Max Distance30 miles
Bike Weight50 lbs
Max Weight Capacity330 lbs

What We Loved

The Ancheer models are some of the best value on the market. They are incredibly affordable, and the frames are relatively robust.

It would be ideal as an entry-level model if you haven’t done a lot of biking. Especially if you want to test out whether it will be something you will enjoy, before investing too much.

Despite the price, it still has a limited one year warranty that covers the battery and bike motor.

For the price, the hybrid wheels are of reasonable quality and the basic suspension helps to offer a smoother ride on roads.

It will handle light off-roading, but it will not be as comfortable or as responsive as some of the higher specification models.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The frame only comes in one size, and it may not be particularly comfortable for taller riders.

It does have a generous weight capacity though. At 330 lbs, this is higher than the average bike, and this makes it a good choice for heavier riders.

For riders that want speed, acceleration and the opportunity to glide up hills, this will not be the model to go for.

It only has a 250-watt motor, and it doesn’t have much oomph, especially if carrying a heavier rider, or being ridden on rougher terrain or hills.

While it has basic suspension and middling hybrid tires, it does not have the sophisticated handling you can expect with more expensive models.

There can be a delay in the pedal-assist kicking in, and the mechanical brakes don’t offer such impressive stopping distances.

The control panel is very rudimentary; there is no fancy LCD screen or an interactive app.

Overall Verdict

This no-frills model is a perfect entry-level option for beginners on a budget that just want to test out electric bike riding. It will handle some light off-roading.

But if you want power, hill climbing capability or the opportunity to go on rougher trails, you would be better off opting for a higher specification model.

GOOD FOR CARRYING HEAVIER LOADS

#4. Benno Boost E 10D

Benno Boost E 10D

Specs

Type of BikeClass 1, Pedal Assist
MotorBosch Performance Line Drive 250 w
Battery36v, 11ah
Charging Time3.5 hours
BrakesShimano Hydraulic Disc
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance75 miles
Bike Weight370 lbs
Max Weight Capacity58.1 lbs

What We Loved

Electric bikes are becoming a popular choice for use by courier companies as an environmentally friendly delivery option.

The electric motor means that the rider doesn’t have to exert themselves as much as a fully pedal-powered bike, especially when they are carrying a heavier load.

The Benno Boost is a model that has a good reputation and, although it is not cheap, it offers good value for money.

Often the long-tailed cargo-style bikes can be difficult to maneuver, cumbersome and bulky.

The Benno Boost is more compact, but still provides a lot of accessory options for ways to store a variety of loads across the frame.

It can cope with a seriously generous 370 lbs maximum load. Of course, you also have to take into account the weight of the rider, but it still offers good leeway for adding on delivery items.

The rear rack can cope with over 80lbs, and the frame is so robust that, even when laden down, the bike still remains pretty stable and balanced. It can also cope with just over 20 lbs on the front.

The Benno Boost has very responsive hydraulic brakes, and this provides added confidence when the bike is laden down. It can also manage a decent top range of 75 miles.

Perfect if you have to do multiple drop offs, or you are doing a longer leisure ride with a picnic or other supplies on board.

Although they will cost extra, Benno has a whole host of different accessory options that you can select from to fit in with your load requirements.

Why it Might Not Work For You

There is only one frame size, which means that this may not provide such a comfortable riding experience for taller riders.

It is a shame, especially given the price, that there is no suspension in the Benno Boost. This would help to provide a smoother riding experience, especially when you are laden down.

The bike offers good value for money as it has a very solid construction and some nice high specification features. But it is not cheap and will be a stretch if you have a limited budget.

Overall Verdict

If you need to carry heavy loads, the Benno Boost could be a good choice. It is very robust, can handle a generous load and there are lots of great accessories to allow you to transport things on the bike in a variety of ways.

GOOD HUNTING AND OFF-ROADING MODEL

#5. Quietkat Apex 750

QuietKat Predator

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2 (throttle on demand)
MotorBBSHD Mid Drive 750 Watt (optional upgrades to 1000 and 1500W)
Battery 48v/14.5ah Panasonic
Charging Time 6 hours
Brakes Front and Rear Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Max Speed 20 mph
Max Distance 20 miles on full power assist
Bike Weight80 lbs
Max Weight Capacity 325 lbs

What We Loved

If you are looking for a powerful, robust and comfortable bike to handle rough terrain, and carry a heavier load, you can’t go wrong with the QuietKat Apex.

This is one of the preferred brands within the hunting community.

This bike can cope well with a lot of rough terrain. It has extremely wide 4.55 inches that can absorb a lot of punishing terrain if you are trying to get to a more remote hunting spot.

It, of course, also has a good front suspension fork.

The frame is very robust and can take a lot of punishment. It is also capable of carrying heavier than average loads. This is perfect if you plan to take along some extra hunting gear.

The mid-drive motor is great for providing power and stability, and it is very quiet – perfect for approaching a hide as stealthily as possible.

The hydraulic brakes are incredibly responsive, and they really are needed given the weight of this bike and the likelihood of riding at high speeds on rougher terrain.

Of course, this bike won’t just work well for hunting. It is versatile enough to be used for general off-roading too.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This bike is expensive. It is not for those on a budget. Unless you are really looking for something that can handle a lot of harsh treatment, there are more affordable models out there that offer better value for money.

Considering the price, it is disappointing that this bike has such a limited range. It will only manage up to 20 miles, and this will be considerably less if you are pushing it over rough, hilly terrain at high speeds.

If you have a further distance to get to your hunting spot, you may want to look at a different model.

This bike is really heavy. While this is to be expected given the very wide tires, powerful motor and robust frame, it does make it difficult to move around.

This is especially true if you have to lift it over tree stumps, river passes, or other obstacles on the way to a more remote hide.

Overall Verdict

This brand has a good reputation, and the bike is solid, powerful, and comfortable. It is just a shame it is so expensive and has such a restrictive maximum distance capacity.

LIGHTWEIGHT, FOLDING COMMUTER BIKE OPTION

#6. Gocycle GS

Gocycle GS

Specs

Type of BikeClass 2 (pedal-assist and throttle on demand)
Motor500 w front wheel hub motor
BatteryLithium-ion battery, 13.5Ah, 22V, Approximately 300 Wh
Charging Time7 hours
BrakesHydraulic disk, front and rear
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance40 miles
Bike Weight36 lbs (16.5 kg)

What We Loved

Gocycle are a well-established folding electric bike brand with a good reputation. The functional design and sleek look of this bike make it an appealing mid price point model.

This bike is lightweight, much lighter than any of the others we have reviewed. This makes it an ideal portable option for commuters that have to fold it and hop on and off public transport.

The magnesium frame is very robust, and it folds down without too much effort, and all the electrical components are neatly stashed away. It is a very slick design.

Often folding models can look rather rudimentary, but the Gocycle models look very polished.

The frame is only available in one size, but it is useful that it has an adjustable seat post that means this also still works for taller riders.

A lot of folding bikes are missing some of the higher specification features. It is nice that the Gocycle has suspension, wider tires and hydraulic disc brakes.

This all makes for a more comfortable, responsive riding experience, even when you take it up to its generous top speeds of 20 mph.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This model is not suited to anyone on a tight budget. Other folding bikes are considerably cheaper, although they might not last as long or provide such a comfortable riding experience.

The battery is not quick to charge and, with a maximum weight capacity of just 200 lbs, it is not suited to heavier riders.

For a folding bike option, the maximum range of 40 miles if above average. But for long-distance riders, you would be better off looking at another model that will offer more longevity in the battery life.

Overall Verdict

If you do a regular commute involving hopping on and off public transport, or you want to store your bike in the office, the Gocycle Folding Electric Bike could be a worthwhile investment.

It is lightweight, reliable and provides a comfortable riding experience.

COMFORTABLE FAT TIRE ELECTRIC BIKE

#7. Juiced Bikes RipCurrent S

juiced ripcurrent s fast emtb

Specs

Type of BikeClass 3 (pedal-assist and throttle on demand)
Motor750 Watt Bafang Geared Hub Drive Motor
Battery52 Volt Battery / 19.2 Ah
Charging Time5 – 7 hours
BrakesHydraulic Disc Brakes
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance100 miles
Bike Weight75.5 lbs
Max Weight Capacity275 lbs

What We Loved

This bike has a lot going for it, considering it is at the more affordable end of the electric bike price range.

It is a versatile option. With its fat bike tires and suspension, it can cope with off-roading, beach riding and will work well on roads for commuting too.

The 750-watt motor is one of the most powerful of those we reviewed. It means that it still hits fast speeds when going up hills or traveling over rougher terrain.

The 52v battery allows you to travel far distances on a single charge. It can take you up to 100 miles, depending on your weight, riding style and terrain you are tackling.

You really need responsive hydraulic brakes on a heavy bike, and you can be confident of them being reliable when traveling at top speeds.

It is another model with three frame sizes, perfect for ensuring you get a comfortable riding position.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Fat bikes are always heavier than the average electric bike. This one, with its powerful battery and motor, is no exception. It tips the scales at over 75 lbs, the heaviest of all those we reviewed.

It means it is not so easy to maneuver, especially if you want to take it on twisting off-road trails. It is also not easy to lift and move around if you have to carry it for any distance.

It is nice that this speed pedelec has a throttle assist option, but it doesn’t have much of a punch when using this mode.

Overall Verdict

It isn’t as zippy as some other high speed pedelecs, probably because of its heavy weight, but it is a reliable all-arounder at a very affordable price. This bike goes fast and far and offers a very comfortable riding experience.

TOP OF THE RANGE, LIGHTWEIGHT ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN BIKE

#8. BESV TRS1

BESV TRS1

Specs

Type of BikeClass 1
MotorShimano STEPS E8000, 500w
BatteryLithium battery, 36V, 14Ah; 504Wh
Charging Time3.5 to 4 hours
BrakesShimano XT M8000, 180mm Disc
Max Speed20 mph
Max Distance 60 miles

What We Loved

BESV are one of the most reputable electric bike manufacturers around. Their award-winning models are top of the range, and you know that you are getting something designed with performance and reliability in mind.

Electric mountain bikes with their powerful batteries and motor, more robust frames, suspension, and wider tires, are usually heavier than standard e-bikes.

One of the best things about the BESV is that the carbon fiber frame is exceptionally lightweight. It makes it much easier to lift it over unrideable off-road areas and get it up onto a roof rack or up a flight of stairs.

Because it is so lightweight, it means that it is a lot easier to pedal without electric assistance too.

The hydraulic brakes on the TRS1 are exceptionally responsive, perfect for high speed downhill terrain.

The TRS1 has a small mid-drive motor, and this offers better bike stability. Mid-drive motors are also more efficient, better at transferring power, quieter and can handle hills better than a hub motor can.

The tires offer good traction and, along with the hardtail suspension fork, they help to ensure a comfortable ride on even the roughest terrain.

It comes in three frame sizes, which means you can get a really comfortable fit for riders of any size.

If you are stopping for a long and lazy lunch, and have access to powerpoint, the TRS1 reaches a full charge in under 4 hours. Much faster than most e-mtbs.

Why it Might Not Work For You

While this bike is unarguably a top of the range model, it comes with an equally high price tag. Unless you are a serious rider, you may not need to spend quite as much to get something you are happy with.

The bike does offer a comfortable riding experience, and the hardtail suspension helps to keep the weight of the bike down. But it would be even more comfortable if it had dual suspension, instead of just a rear suspension fork.

Overall Verdict

There isn’t much to complain about when it comes to the BESV TRS1. But with such a high price tag you might want to opt for a less expensive, but still perfectly functional, model instead.

Unless, of course, you are a serious rider planning to do a lot of aggressive off-roading.
