Electric skateboards, like a lot of other small electric modes of transport, are growing in popularity.

While learning to ride them can be more tricky to master than an electric bike or scooter, they are just as environmentally friendly.

They are also much more lightweight and portable. While they may be more similar to electric hoverboards in size, they can generally hit much higher speeds

In this article, we will provide some general information about what to look for in a good eSkateboard, the different types, and their advantages.

Finally, we’ll review some of the most popular boards available on the market, to allow you to make a more informed choice on which one to buy.

Skateboards and Longboards – Is There a Difference?

Sometimes you will hear of certain skateboard models being referred to as Longboards. The length and size of the board can make a big difference in terms of the riding experience and where you might want to use it.

An electric longboard is usually one that has a deck over 35 inches in length, and they are also usually at least a couple of inches wider than a traditional skateboard.

This additional length and width mean that they usually offer a more stable, balanced and easier riding experience. It makes them better suited to beginner riders.

It also means they work better for taller riders and those with larger shoe sizes, as the deck is bigger for them to balance on.

They are flatter and more aerodynamic than a traditional skateboard. Instead of having curved up kicktail ends, they just become narrower.

The curved flipboard ends of a traditional skateboard make them better for doing tricks and jumps and kicking them up.

The bigger, wider wheels that are usually found on a longboard also contribute to a smoother, more comfortable riding experience.

The smaller wheels on a traditional skateboard help to make it maneuver more easily, and they work better when performing tricks.

Traditional skateboards, as well as being better for jumps and tricks, tend to be a bit lighter and easier to transport than the more bulky and unwieldy longboard models.

Can Electric Skateboards Be Used Off-Road?

You won’t be able to use a skateboard on the roughest types of trails that you could send an electric bike down. But some models are capable of a bit of light off-roading. They can manage on grass, gravel, and even sand.

Certain models have been designed for being used on more varied types of terrain. They will usually have a more flexible deck and bigger, grippy, air-filled tires for helping to absorb shocks and providing a smooth ride.

They will also have a more powerful motor and battery to help provide decent acceleration despite the tougher surfaces.

Be aware that hitting bumps at high speeds can be pretty dangerous on a skateboard. The challenge is in trying to keep your balance.

Off-roading on a skateboard should only be done by confident, experienced riders. You should also watch your top speeds and make sure you are wearing protective gear.

Reviews of the Best Electric Skateboards and Longboards

maxfind max4 best electric skateboard

Specs

MotorHigh Torque Dual 750 Watts *2
Battery158.4 Wh Samsung Lithium Ion with custom BMS
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed26 mph
Max Distance13-45 miles (depending on battery)
Max Capacity220 lbs
Skateboard Weight16 lbs

What We Loved

The Maxfind Max-4 is an affordable, fast, and long range (with the right battery upgrade) option that we love.

The motors are fantastic, delivering great torque and significant hill climb abilities (up to 30% grade!).

The flex in the board deck and the wide wheels mean that it provides a very stable and smooth riding experience.

Unlike some other models, this has an IP65 rating water-resistant mainboard. It still can’t be fully submerged in deep puddles, but it can cope with splashes in wet weather conditions.

This makes it a good choice if you live in a rainy state and don’t want to get caught out.

Why it Might Not Work For You

It doesn’t have the range capabilities that Boosted and Evolve do, at least on the basic model; it will only get you up to a maximum of 13 miles in between charges. Not ideal for those that want to be out riding all day. However, there are 2 battery upgrades, each one costing an additional $100 each. So, if you have the budget, this can be remedied.

Although it doesn’t have a great range, it does have a very easy access swappable battery design. Some serious riders take additional batteries with them to allow them to change them over while on long-distance rides.

The wide wheels may help to provide additional stability, but they are not as well built or robust as some of the more expensive model’s ones are.

Overall Verdict

Compared with the big, expensive brands like Evolve and Boosted, this offers great value for money. It has a powerful motor, high top speed capabilities, and it can handle being ridden in wet weather conditions too.

Highly recommended and super fun.

Evolve Skateboards – Bamboo GTX Street Electric Skateboard

Specs

Motor3000 motors
Battery36 volt 10AH Lithium Ion
Charging Time5 hours
Maximum Speed26 mph
Max Distance31 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Skateboard Weight19.4 lbs

What We Loved

If you are an experienced skateboarder who loves high-speed riding, then the Evolve Bamboo GTX Street could be perfect. It is possible to tip the speedometer at a maximum of 26mph, depending on riding style and conditions.

If you have ridden a skateboard before, you will know that this is a pretty hair-raising speed, and certainly not the faint-hearted or newbie riders.

This is what sets this model apart from most others, as few can hit those speeds.

It also has a pretty unheard of maximum range capacity. It is possible to get up to 31 miles out of this model on a single charge.

Of course, this is only if you are riding on smooth flat surfaces and cruising along at sensible speeds on eco mode.

The speed and range are possible thanks to 3000w of motor power and a high-quality battery. The acceleration on this beast takes some getting used to.

It has a kick, and, while you are adjusting, it would be sensible to keep it in one of the lower speed modes. It has four-speed modes: Safety, Eco, Fast and GT.

It also tackles hills with ease, and the bamboo deck is very flexible but also robust. It is designed to last, but it also carves well, and it absorbs small bumps without making the ride too jarring.

The wider wheels also help to provide a smoother ride too.

The remote is large, but it is comfortable to hold, and it has an LCD screen that displays rider modes, battery level, and speed.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is one of the most expensive of all the boards we reviewed.

There is no denying this board is exceptionally well-built, designed to last and has fantastic speed and range capacity.

But, if you are not a speed demon or serious pro rider, you may not need to spend as much to get a board that you enjoy riding.

Although the remote is comfortable to hold, it is pretty bulky, and it doesn’t look as sleek or professional as some other models. It doesn’t have a connected app, Bluetooth, or built-in LED lights, which is a shame given its price point.

The regenerative braking system is pretty responsive, but it isn’t as sharp as the Boosted braking. When you are traveling at top speeds, you will need to be aware of your stopping distances.

This board isn’t water-resistant, so it is not a good choice for riding in wet weather conditions.

While the board would handle some very light off-roading, it is not designed for this sort of terrain.

If you want to head off smooth road surfaces, then you would be better off opting for the All-Terrain version from the GTX Series. The AT model doesn’t have the same super high top speed or range, though.

Overall Verdict

For a smooth, fast, rangy riding experience on a model that is built to last, the Evolve Bamboo GTX Street is right up there at the top of the marketplace.

It is pricey though, has a basic interface, and those top speeds would certainly not be for anyone other than the most confident and experienced riders.

BEST COMPACT AND LIGHTWEIGHT OPTION

#3. Boosted Mini X

Boosted Mini X Electric Skateboard

Specs

Motor1000w motor power
Battery199Wh
Charging Time1 hour 45 minutes
Maximum Speed20 mph
Max Distance14 miles
Max Capacity250 lbs
Hoverboard Weight16.8 lbs

What We Loved

This electric skateboard is shorter and more compact than a traditional longboard style board. Normally shortboards are used more for tricks and stunts, and they don’t offer quite the same comfort and stability a longboard does.

The Boosted Mini X, though, is also designed to offer a more portable commuter option board.

The board is built extremely solidly and can handle a lot of rough treatment, especially if you plan to use it for tricks too. Just be prepared for it feeling a lot heavier than a traditional shortboard; kicking up the tail feels a lot different.

Shortboards are nippy and easier to maneuver than their longboard counterparts, and the Boosted Mini X is no exception.

Although it is not light, it is lighter than a lot of longboard models. Its compact frame means it is easier to take on public transport or store under your desk at work.

It also charges up in under 2 hours; really handy if you need to top up while you are at work.

The motor is not the most powerful, but it still handles gentle inclines with efficiency and the regenerative brakes are exceptionally responsive.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This shortboard does not offer nearly as much flexibility on the deck as a lot of its longboard counterparts. Also, because the battery placement is in the middle of the deck, that means it is even less flexible.

It doesn’t offer the smoothest riding experience over bumpier road surfaces, and it is not suited to any off-roading.

It is best suited to short-range commutes or fun, trick riding. The maximum range of 14 miles is certainly nowhere near as generous as the likes of the Evolve Bamboo GTX Street.

While the remote has three-speed modes and can connect to an app, it is a relatively basic interface.

It is another board that is not waterproof, so if you get caught out in wet weather, it would not be ideal.

Although it does offer good value for money when you look at the specification, this is another board that is not for those on a budget.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for a compact, portable and easy to maneuver board from a well-respected company, then the Boosted Mini X could be a good choice.

It is slightly cheaper than the top brand longboard options, and it still has generous top speeds.

It doesn’t offer as smooth a ride as its longboard counterparts though. With its less generous range, it is best for short commutes or fun trick riding on smooth surfaces.

Tall riders with larger feet may also find the deck is not roomy enough for them and have difficulty getting into a comfortable and stable riding position.

SKATEBOLT Electric Skateboard Longboard with Remote Controller

Specs

MotorDual 500w motors
Battery36V, 6600mAh Lithium Samsung battery
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed25 mph
Max Distance18.6 miles
Max Capacity280 lbs
Hoverboard Weight19.5 lbs

What We Loved

If you can’t afford to push the boat out and go for an Evolve or Boosted Board, then opting for the Skatebolt Tornado B could be a great alternative. It is much more affordable, but it still has a lot of nice features.

Despite the much lower price, it still provides a very comfortable and stable feeling ride on its wide and flexible deck.

It is another really fast board, capable of hitting top speeds of 25mph. It doesn’t have quite the same acceleration as the Evolve Bamboo GTX.

But, unless you are a complete speed demon, you will likely be impressed with how quickly it gets up to fast speeds.

For new riders, it will likely be intimidating, and it is handy that it has three different speed modes to ease you into the feeling.

The regenerative brakes are pretty responsive, although not perhaps as good as the Boosted boards. They are abrupt, though, and take a bit of getting used to.

The Skatebolt has impressive torque, handles hills pretty well, and it carves well. It also has rear brake lights which is a nice additional feature.

This model is perfect for heavier riders. It has a generous maximum weight capacity of 280lbs, more than your average board.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although this board has good acceleration and responsive brakes, there can be a bit of lag between the wireless remote and the power on the board, making it a little jerky sometimes.

You really do have to be careful at high speeds. Although you know you can do an emergency stop no problem, because the brakes are so sensitive, it can be a little harsh.

The remote control is not the highest quality, although it does work well enough.

The wheels are not as robust as the Boosted or Evolve models, so don’t expect them to last quite as long if you are a regular long-distance rider.

While it is fast, it doesn’t have the vast range that the Evolve Bamboo GTX Street does. Given it is almost a third of the price, though, you can’t complain too much.

Overall Verdict

If you are a serious rider looking for a lot of power, but you are on a budget, the Skatebolt Tornado B could be a great board to select. It is relatively affordable, offers great value for money and can get up to impressively high speeds.

It is not quite as sophisticated as the Evolve or Boosted Boards. Also, the braking system can be harsh at high speeds, but it is still a seriously impressive board for the money.

GOOD OFF-ROADING ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD

#5. Evolve Carbon GT All-Terrain

Evolve Carbon GT

Specs

Motor1500 watt dual motor (3000 watt total)
Battery36v, 14AH Samsung Lithium Ion battery
Charging Time5 hours
Maximum Speed22mph
Max Distance19 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight21 lbs

What We Loved

If you are looking for a bells and whistles off-road capable longboard, then the Evolve Carbon GT All-Terrain could be the perfect model for you. It looks fantastic too, with sleek and ergonomic board design and high tech finish.

It copes well on less smooth road surfaces, and can even handle grass and gravel. The large air-filled tires absorb a lot of lumps and bumps well, and they are very grippy and hold to the road well.

You can feel confident about getting a very stable riding experience.

The remote on this model is excellent with good connectivity. The LED screen shows your battery status, speed mode, and mileage.

It also allows you to switch between all-terrain riding mode and street mode, which allows you to get up to the top speeds.

It might not be as fast as the Evolve Bamboo GTX Street, but it still has 3000 watts of power, great acceleration, and torque. It also handles hills with ease.

Evolve models have four-speed settings, and this is a nice additional feature for those just getting the hang of hitting the high speeds. You can work up to them gradually to build up your confidence.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The carbon fiber frame is very robust, ideal for off-roading, but it doesn’t have the same flexibility as the wood boards do. If you like to do a lot of carving, then you may be better opting for the Evolve Bamboo version instead.

This is the most expensive of all the models reviewed. Unless you are a serious off-roader that needs the speed, power, and sturdiness of this model, there are cheaper versions that will do the trick.

It is also one of the heaviest of all the boards we reviewed, at 21lbs. Not ideal if you have to carry it a lot in between rides.

At 5 hours, the Evolve models are not fast to charge, although you do get a good range and there is an option to purchase a fast charger for an additional cost.

It always seems a shame that, given the price, the Evolve models don’t have a connective app or built-in lights.

Overall Verdict

If you are happy to max out your budget then you will get a very robust, high-performing board in the Evolve Carbon GT AT that will handle rougher terrain with ease.

Teamgee H8 31 inch Electric Skateboard

Specs

Motor480w motor
Battery36V/ 3.5Ah Lithium battery
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed15 mph
Max Distance9.3 miles
Max Capacity160 lbs
Hoverboard Weight11.6lbs

What We Loved

For kids, teens, or lightweight adults, the Teamgee H8 31-inch is an affordable and reliable little board. Unlike a normal longboard, this is a bit more compact and lightweight, and it makes it great for making neat turns.

Although they are not as comfortable or stable as a longboard variety, this board is still balanced and powerful enough for beginners and more experienced kid riders.

The 480w motor manages a top speed of 15mph – plenty fast enough, and it is very lightweight, making it much easier for carrying around in between use.

It has a very slick design, and the deck is super slim at just 0.5 inches wide.

The three-speed settings that can be operated from the remote, making it great for allowing beginner riders to get used to the feeling of riding at lower speeds first. There is also a handy cruise setting too.

When you consider the price, it is nice that this model features regenerative braking, which helps to top up the charge somewhat when riding.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This model is only suited to lightweight riders. It has a maximum weight capacity of just 160lbs, and this is part of the reason it is marketed more towards kids.

Shorter boards don’t carve as well as their longer counterparts, and you don’t get such a smooth riding experience. This is especially true for the Teamgee version as the Canadian maple wood deck is pretty stiff and inflexible.

If you are doing longer rides or tackling a lot of hills, you will want to look for a more powerful model. This doesn’t have the oomph for getting up hills that some of the previous models do.

The range is disappointing too at just 9.3 miles, although you couldn’t really expect too much in this price range.

Overall Verdict

For kids that are new to electric skateboarding, they can’t go far wrong with the Teamgee H8. It is affordable, offers great value for money, is reliable and very portable.

It is not suited to heavier riders, though, and it doesn’t offer as stable or flexible a riding experience as some of the longboard varieties.

Wave Street 2000 Watt Electric Off-Road Skateboard

Specs

Motor2000 watt motor
Battery36v, 11Ah Lithium Ion Battery Pack
Charging Time3 hours
Maximum Speed18.6 mph
Max Distance10 miles
Max Capacity285 lbs
Hoverboard Weight30 lbs

What We Loved

This board is a little more affordable than the likes of the Boosted of Evolve longboard off-road capable models. It still has 2000w of motor power though and is capable of hitting top speeds of 18.6mph.

This is more than enough for most riders.

It can carry up to 285lbs in weight, which is more than most of the models we reviewed. This makes it a good choice for heavier riders, especially as the powerful motor will mean even bigger riders will still get good acceleration.

The big, air-filled tires help to provide good traction and stability, and they also help to absorb the bumps when you take it off-road. It provides a pretty smooth riding experience.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This model is still pricey, and you don’t get the build quality that you do with the Boosted or Evolve models.

It is also pretty basic in terms of design; you are not going to look the coolest or most streamlined on your Wave Street model.

It has a pretty paltry 10-mile range, not good for long-distance riders. If you are taking it off-road and if you are a heavier rider, you can expect the range to be considerably less too.

The biggest drawback to this model is it really is a bit of a brick. At 30lbs, it is way heavier than any of the other models reviewed.

It really makes it difficult to carry around in between rides, and it also impacts on the maneuverability of the board too.

Overall Verdict

The brand is more affordable than Boosted and Evolve. But it is not as sophisticated and, given it is still not a budget model, it doesn’t offer such good value for money.

While it may be suited to heavier riders, it is a cumbersome model that will not be easy to transport. Don’t expect it to take you far distances either.

Miageek Electric Skateboard Electronic Longboard 20 KM_H Top Speed

Specs

Motor250w dual hub motors
Battery24V 2200mah Lithium Battery
Charging Time2 hours
Maximum Speed12 mph
Max Distance6 miles
Max Capacity285 lbs
Hoverboard Weight11 lbs

What We Loved

What makes the Miageek worth a mention is that it is a super lightweight electric board, at just 11lbs, but it still can handle heavy riders. It has a maximum weight capacity of 285lbs, which is way above average.

It is also super affordable; one of the cheapest we reviewed by far.

Because it is not a fast model, it would be a good choice for new young riders to start off on. It will be less nerve-jangling for the parents and confidence-building for the kids.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This has a piddling 250w motor power, and it really struggles to accelerate up to its claimed top speed of 12mph. It won’t cope with off-roading, and it can’t handle hills either.

It really is just for cruising along smooth, flat road surfaces at sensible speeds.

This is just a short ride board only, the top range is also piddling, at just 6 miles. If the board has a heavy rider, it will really not be capable of much at all in terms of distance.

The board is pretty stiff and doesn’t offer the smooth, flexible ride of its more expensive counterparts.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for a simple, basic, highly affordable model as an introduction for your kid to electric skateboarding, the Miageek could be a good choice.

While it doesn’t have high top speeds or acceleration capabilities, this could be good for ensuring your kid has a safe ride.

Just don’t expect anything spectacular.

MOST AFFORDABLE OPTION FOR KIDS

#9. RazorX Cruiser Electric Skateboard

razor x cruiser electric skateboard

Specs

Motor125w motor
Battery22V lithium-ion battery
Maximum Speed10mph
Max Distance40 mins continuous use
Max Capacity220lbs
Hoverboard Weight10.5lbs

What We Loved

This is the most affordable of all the electric skateboards that we reviewed. If you have a young kid that you want to let try out a very inexpensive model, this could be a good choice.

Because it only has a 125w motor and a top speed of 10mph, you don’t have to worry about them getting into trouble at crazy fast speeds.

It will also be easier to build their confidence in a model that doesn’t have seriously responsive acceleration.

If they don’t take to boarding, at least you haven’t bought a model that costs the earth.

This is also the most lightweight of all the boards we have reviewed; perfect for smaller kids that would struggle to carry some of the bulkier boards.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This really is a basic budget model. It is not suited to anyone other than young, beginner riders.

It is slow, not particularly responsive and the board itself it stiff. The ride is not as smooth as some of the boards with more flexible decks.

It won’t go far either and has a maximum battery life of 40 minutes before it will need to be recharged.

Overall Verdict

A basic budget model. It will work well for young, nervous riders that need a confidence boost, but other than that it doesn’t offer a whole lot more.

A HIGH SPECIFICATION ALL-ROUNDER

#10. Boosted Stealth Electric Skateboard

Boosted Stealth Electric Skateboard

Specs

Motor2,100w motor
Battery199wh rechargeable battery
Charging Time1 hour 45 minutes
Maximum Speed24mph
Max Distance14 miles
Max Capacity250 lbs
Hoverboard Weight17 lbs

What We Loved

When you buy a Boosted board you know you are getting something thoughtfully designed, reliably built and sleek in appearance. The Boosted Stealth is no exception.

It has a seriously powerful 2,100w motor, and the acceleration is one of the most responsive of all those we reviewed. You get up to top speeds in alarmingly quick time, and it powers up hills without any hesitation.

It is a great board if you live in a hilly region like San Francisco. It excels in this area and, for hill climbing, it is probably one of the best boards around.

The board has been designed to provide as comfortable a riding experience as possible. The deck has a lot of flex, and it carves really well.

It also has wide and very grippy tires. They provide a lot of traction, and you can have confidence when tackling steep hills.

If you are a new rider, you certainly don’t want to be taking the Stealth up to its super-fast top speeds of 24mph too early.

This board has an unusually high amount of speed settings, though. With a total of 5, you can start slowly, while you build up your confidence. It also gives you a lot of choices for allowing you to conserve battery energy.

The Stealth, unlike most models, has a reverse mode and this can be useful if you are trying to maneuver in tight spaces. It can also just be useful for helping you work on balance and control on the board.

The board reaches full charge really quickly, in under 2 hours. This is perfect if you want to top up the charge at work before you head back on your evening commute.

You can connect the board’s controller to your smartphone, and the app has some nice features, including map tracking, distance, and speeds traveled and battery level.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This board is one of the most expensive of those we reviewed. Of course, with a Boosted board, you are getting something powerful and with a high specification.

Unless you are a serious adrenaline junkie that is never off your board, though, you maybe don’t need to spend as much.

The speed and acceleration can be intimidating and, riding at the top speeds of this board increase the chance of injury.

This board doesn’t have as generous a range as some of the other higher specification boards. It can reach up to 14 miles of range, but this would only be if it is being ridden on flat surfaces in an economical style.

If you are using it in the hyperpower mode or on hills, you will have to keep in my mind that the range will be considerably less than this also.

While the remote is ergonomically designed and well-built, it doesn’t have an LED screen, and this is a little disappointing, considering the price you are paying.

It is also a shame that the board is not waterproof; so no riding in wet weather conditions.

Overall Verdict

This is a high-performance electric skateboard with a high-end, robust and comfortable deck and super powerful motor. It provides punchy acceleration, great capability on hills and crazy fast speeds.

It also has a very high price tag, though. Unless you are an experienced skater that wants to push the limit, there might be no need to get something this extreme.

How To Choose the Right Electric Skateboard for You

When it comes to choosing an electric skateboard that will work best for you, there are several key things you should consider. Some of the key criteria are as follows:

What is Your Riding Style?

If you are a beginner, you won’t necessarily need anything with a seriously high powered motor. You will also likely be better opting for a longboard, which offers more stability and it is easier to balance on it.

A longboard is usually better for commuting and cruising. If you want to focus on learning tricks and doing jumps, then a shorter skateboard will work better.

Where Will You Be Using Your Board?

If you plan to stick with flat, smooth surfaces, a normal longboard will work well.

If you want to use it on grass, gravel or other bumpier surfaces, then you should consider a board suited to different terrains. It should have wider, grippy tires and the board deck should be more flexible.

If you do a lot of carving, smooth sweeping turns in corners, then you will also want a more flexible deck.

If you are going to a skatepark or doing lots of tight turns and jumps, then you should select a shorter board that is easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

For riding on steep hills, you must have a powerful motor and efficient battery.

What Are the Laws Relating to Electric Skateboard Use?

The laws surrounding the use of electric skateboards can be confusing. They vary greatly depending on the country and then also the state that you are based in.

Some states within the United States, like California, now have specific laws regarding the use of electric skateboards. Some don’t have any specific regulations in place yet.

Before you purchase an electric skateboard, you should take the time to do a bit of research to find out what the most up to date situation is regarding their use in your area.

New laws are being introduced regularly, and they can change quickly.

Wherever you are based, make sure you are sensible. You should always wear a helmet and, ideally, additional protective gear like knee and elbow pads.

Don’t ride at high speeds on pedestrian pathways, or in areas that are busy with other vehicles. Know your limits, and don’t try to ride too hard and fast too quickly.

Electric Skateboards and Plane Regulations

You should also be aware that not all electric skateboards can be transported on planes.

If you want to take them on a trip with you that requires a flight, you should know that they have to be put into the hold and you should take into account the battery strength.

Batteries that are over 160Wh in strength are not allowed on planes. Even for batteries under this strength, individual airlines have the last word regarding whether the item can be brought on board.

Always check with your airline if you plan to bring your board along for the trip.
