You must have been living under a rock if you haven’t witnessed the explosion in demand for self-balancing hoverboards!

Over the last ten years, particularly after high profile celebrity endorsement, they went to the top of the Christmas list for lots of kids, and maybe some adults too!

Although many electric hoverboards are suitable for more mature riders, the bulk of the market is geared towards kids’ usage.

They are much more affordable than the likes of an e-bike or electric scooter, easier to transport and they are super fun.

Because of the spike in their popularity, it has meant that a lot of manufacturers have started producing lower-cost models and competition is fierce. It can be hard to know which hoverboard will offer the best value for money while still being safe and user-friendly.

Our buyers guide aims to help you understand what to look for and lists some of the best hoverboards for kids available right now.

Safety and Recalls

Back in 2015, there was a massive scare that almost brought the hoverboard market to its knees. As a result of their growing popularity, some manufacturers were taking short cuts to produce high volumes of hoverboards at low-cost prices.

This resulted in some models not meeting safety standards.

There were a number of cases of hoverboard batteries overheating and then catching fire, especially when they were being charged.

Regulatory authorities were, thankfully, quick to act, and in 2016, over half a million boards were recalled.

Following this recall, there have been much more stringent safety requirements put into place for boards being sold in the United States, and much of the rest of the world too.

Always Look For UL2272 Certification

To be sure that the hoverboard is going to be the safest in terms of its batteries and electronics, then you need to look for one that has received UL2272 Certification.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the testing that is required to meet this level of certification ensures that the hoverboard is meeting appropriate safety standards.

If you can’t find evidence of this certification, don’t buy the board. You could run the risk of allowing your child access to a product that has not been appropriately tested, and it could contain substandard parts.

All of the models we have reviewed below are UL 2272 Certified hoverboards.

Take Sensible Safety Precautions When Riding

Anyone who is riding a hoverboard should be sensible about where they ride it and the protective safety gear that they use.

This is even more important for kids.

There have been a fairly high number of reported injuries, many of them fractures. Often these could have been prevented if some simple precautions were taken before letting your kid loose on their hoverboard.

Make sure they always wear a helmet and, ideally, they should also wear protective knee pads and elbow pads.

Make sure they are supervised initially and that they know where it is safe to use it.

They should keep to quiet, smooth surfaces that are away from busy traffic and high numbers of pedestrians.

And here’s a great idea for kids: we review the best hoverboard go kart attachments.

KIDS HOVERBOARD BUYING GUIDE NOTES

When you are looking at what hoverboard to purchase for kids, some key things are worth considering, including the following.

Speed and Power

For younger kids, don’t purchase a crazy fast model.

Some boards can hit speeds of over 10mph. This will increase the risk of injury for a young rider that may not be able to keep the board under control.

If the motor is too powerful, it can also result in rapid acceleration, and this can also lead to balance issues.

There are often training modes that can be completed or even top speed settings if you want to minimize the risk while they are learning.

Off-road models are also popular, and these allow the users to go onto rougher terrain like grass, sand, and gravel. You will need to think carefully about whether you want to give your child this option.

Usually, off-road models are bigger and more powerful and staying stable on less smooth trails is more of a challenge.

Weight and Size

While having a higher weight capacity is useful for adults to be able to ride the hoverboard too, sometimes kids’ models can be considerably lighter. This makes it easier for your child to move it around in between riding it.

For smaller kids, if the board is too bulky or wide, this can also make it more of a challenge to ride it.

For younger age groups, it may be better to stick with the 6.5 inch wide models as these will be easier for them to get the knack of.

Apps and Other Features

Some boards come with Bluetooth capability and very advanced apps. While these can be nice for letting your kid listen to music while riding, or tracking their performance, they can add to the price of the board.

Consider how much extra value this will actually add and if you have the budget to stretch for this.

Reviews of the Best Hoverboards for Kids

LAMBORGHINI TwoDots Hoverboard

Specs

Motor400w motor
Battery36V 4.0AH Lithium Ion
Charging Time3.5 hours
Max Speed9.3 mph
Max Distance9.3 miles
Max Capacity264 lbs
Hoverboard Weight33 lbs

What We Loved

If your kid loves fast cars, then they will probably love the idea of getting a hoverboard that is attached to the Lamborghini name. Don’t worry though, although the name may seem like a gimmick, the hoverboard itself from TwoDots is actually very well made.

It is reasonably powerful and has a decent range capacity. With top speeds of 9.3 miles per hour, it is not too crazy though. It is also really useful that this model has 3-speed settings.

This is reassuring while your kid is getting used to riding, you don’t have to worry about them losing control at top speeds.

As well as looking cool, it sounds cool too. When it starts up, it has a realistic-sounding motor engine sound. It may start to annoy the adults that have to listen to it (and it can be disabled), but this is sure to appeal to the kids.

With Bluetooth capability, music can be played from its built-in speakers, and the app is one that will keep them occupied for a while.

It allows kids to control the board remotely and track their speeds and distances. You can even make the board ‘honk’ its horn to let people know you are coming.

Because this is an 8.5-inch wheel size model with a maximum weight capacity of 264lbs, it means that adults can have a try riding it too.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although you do get a lot for your money, this is not a budget board. If your kid loses interest in new technology quickly, you may be better off buying one of the more affordable models instead of investing in this one.

At 33lbs, it is the heaviest of all the models we have reviewed. For smaller kids, it will not be as easy to lift when they are not riding.

For very young kids you may prefer to select one of the 6.5-inch tire versions that are lighter, less bulky and easier for them to maneuver.

Overall Verdict

Powerful, reliable, and comes with a very interactive app. The Lamborghini Twodots looks seriously cool and will work for both kids and their parents.

CHARGES SUPER QUICKLY

#2. Swagtron Swagboard Pro T1

Swagtron Swagboard Pro T1

Specs

Motor250w motor
BatteryLG Battery Lithium Ion
Charging Time1 hour
Max Speed8 mph
Max Distance12 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight22 lbs

What We Loved

This is an affordable model that is perfect for beginner boarders and young kids. You don’t have to worry about them going at crazy top speeds as it can only hit a maximum of 8 mph – plenty fast enough!

It is pretty lightweight too at just 22lbs, making it easier for them to lift and move around in between rides.

There are only two riding modes, rather than the three the Twodots model has. But it still means that this will help your kid moderate their speed when they are first learning.

The gear stabilization means that it provides a more controlled ride when you are going downhill. Despite it only having a 250w motor, it still handles gentle hills pretty effectively.

One of the biggest plus points about the Swagtron Swagboard Pro T1 is the fact that it charges up fully in just one hour.

There is nothing worse for your kid than having to wait hours for the board to charge before they can get out on their first ride. By the time they have opened the rest of their presents on Christmas Day, this one will be ready for them to get out on!

Why it Might Not Work For You

There are cheaper models out there that have more features than this model, so, in terms of value for money, it is not necessarily the best. There is no app or Bluetooth speaker capability, and the solid tires are not as high quality as some other brands.

It claims to have a generous 12-mile maximum range. Unless it has a very light rider and is traveling on flat and smooth surfaces, it is going to struggle to get anywhere near this. We think the manufacturers may have been over-generous with their claim.

Overall Verdict

An affordable model that does the job well – just don’t expect anything amazing or out of the ordinary.

GOOD FOR BEGINNER RIDERS

#3. Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Hoverboard

Razor Hovertrax 2.0

Specs

Motor350w dual motor (700w power overall)
Battery36V lithium ion battery pack
Max Speed8 mph
Max Distance8 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight22 lbs

What We Loved

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 has a very similar specification to the Swagtron Swagboard model we reviewed. It is good for kids because it doesn’t go too fast or far, but it doesn’t have many extra features.

This model has a more powerful motor, though, so it will help your kid glide up any inclines with a bit more oomph. It also has what Razor calls ‘Everbalance Technology.

When someone first learns to ride a hoverboard, learning how to mount and stay balanced is a real challenge.

The self-balancing feature usually kicks in once the board detects the weight of the rider, and this means it can be a little unsettling as it adjusts when you get on.

The Razor starts to self-balance the moment the power is switched on, and it is a little less wobbly when you do first stand on it.

This may appeal to parents that want their kids to feel a little more confident from the beginning.

Why it Might Not Work For You

As already mentioned, this model doesn’t come with Bluetooth or an app. It might be too limiting for teenagers that want to keep up with friends on faster models.

Considering it is not the cheapest model, it maybe doesn’t offer quite as good value for money as some other boards do.

Overall Verdict

The Razor’s “ever balance” technology may help your kid to adjust to the feel of a hoverboard more quickly. Other than this, though, it doesn’t have many stand out features when you consider its slightly higher price tag.

A SIMPLE OFF-ROAD OPTION

#4. Hyper Gogo Off-Road Hoverboard

HYPER GOGO Hoverboards,Off Road Hover Board

Specs

Motor400w dual motors
Battery4.0Ah, 25.2V, 100.8WH
Charging Time3 hours
Max Speed6 mph
Max Distance6 miles
Max Capacity198 lbs
Hoverboard Weight32 lbs

What We Loved

The HyperGoGo with its 400w dual motors and deep-tread tires will allow your kid the chance to explore further. It is a good choice if they want to use their hoverboard on grass, sand and gravel but you don’t want to pay too much.

It also has integral Bluetooth speakers so that they can listen to music too.

Why it Might Not Work For You

For an off-road capable board, this model is pretty affordable; it is just that there are quite a few things that could prove limiting in other ways.

For starters, this is one of the slowest models we have reviewed. This may be something you want if you have bought it for a particularly young rider.

It could, however, prove to be frustrating for older kids wanting to keep up with their friends on faster models.

It doesn’t go far either. It only has a 26v battery, the least powerful of all those reviewed. The range is a bit disappointing, and if it is taken off-road, this will run the battery life down even faster.

It is also one of the heaviest of all the models we reviewed. It won’t be easy for your kid to carry in between rides, especially if they run out of battery because of its poor range capabilities.

Although this has a Bluetooth speaker, the quality of the sound that comes from it is not as impressive as some of the other models reviewed.

Overall Verdict

If your kid wants to do some light off-roading, this could offer an affordable option. The limited speed and range could prove to be frustrating, for some, but it’s great for younger kids to learn with.

AN EFFICIENT HILL CLIMBER

#5. Gyroor T581 Hoverboard

Gyroor T581 Hoverboard 6.5_ Off Road All Terrain Hoverboard

Specs

Motor300w dual motors
Battery4.4Ah/36V (LG/SAMSUNG Cells)
Charging Time2 hours
Max Speed10 mph
Max Distance7.5 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight24 lbs

What We Loved

As an off-road and hill-climbing hoverboard, we think the Gyroor T581 offers better value for money than the Hyper Go Go Model. It still has decent engine power, but it also has a more powerful battery, faster top speeds and increased range.

It is a lot lighter too, so it will be less cumbersome for your kids to carry in between rides.

It handles hills better than a lot of other models, and it would be great if you live in an area where they can’t be avoided.

Considering the price, it still has a lot of extra features, including a reasonable app and Bluetooth speakers.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This is a 6.5-inch tire model, so for older teens and adults, it is not quite as wide or supportive. It won’t be as effective for off-roading as a model with wider tires will.

Overall Verdict

This is an affordable and lightweight basic off-road model. Being a smaller board means it will be limited in its capabilities on rougher terrain though.

TOMOLOO Music-Rhythmed Hover Board for Kids

Specs

Motor250w motor
Battery36V/2Ah lithium
Charging Time2 hours
Max Speed7.5 mph
Max Distance7.5 miles
Max Capacity165 lbs
Hoverboard Weight17.5 lbs

What We Loved

This is a very fun model for kids that might use it at a hoverboard party. It is very reasonably priced, and the company are well-established and have a pretty good reputation.

Two things really set this model apart from many of its competitors. The first is that it is incredibly lightweight. At just 17.5lbs it is one of the lightest on the market.

Great for smaller kids and those that have to carry it further distances in between rides.

The second major selling point is that the rainbow LED lighting system changes color in time with any music being played through the Bluetooth speakers. This will no doubt appeal to a lot of kids out there.

Why it Might Not Work For You

If your kid wants a super fast and powerful model, then you shouldn’t opt for the Tomoloo. It doesn’t have the greatest top speed or range capabilities, and it is not one suited to rougher surfaces.

It isn’t the best choice if you want a model that can be used by the adults in the family either. It can only handle up to 165lbs, and the 250w motor means that it will be very slow for anyone at the top end of that range.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for a fun, affordable board for a young entry-level rider, this could be a great choice. Going for something with a higher specification would be a better choice if you want one that the kids and adults in the family can all ride.

BEST BUDGET OPTION

#7. VEVELINE Hoverboard

VEVELINE Hoverboard UL2272 Certified 6.5 inch Self Balancing Hoverboards

Specs

Motor300w dual motors
Battery36V/2.0Ah Li-ion
Charging Time5 hours
Max Speed6 mph
Max Distance6 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight18 lbs

What We Loved

The Veveline Hoverboard offers fantastic value for money. Okay, it might not have a super high specification, but for young entry-level boarders, this could be a perfect choice.

It has a REALLY affordable price (the cheapest of all those we reviewed) and, although it doesn’t have lots of fancy features, it is pretty reliable.

It is also another one that will work well for smaller riders because of its lightweight. They are not going to struggle to move this one around so much in between rides.

Despite the price point, this can still cope with a maximum weight capacity of 220lbs so it would work for lighter adult riders too.

Why it Might Not Work For You

At this price, I guess you can’t really expect too much. For parents of young riders, it may appeal because it can’t go any faster than 6mph. For older kids, though, this limited speed capacity may prove frustrating.

It also takes 5 hours to charge; it is a lot more than average. Impatient little riders could get annoyed at having to wait so long between rides.

This doesn’t come with any app or Bluetooth speaker, but I guess that would be expecting a lot considering the price.

Overall Verdict

This is a very affordable and lightweight model, perfectly suited to young riders that don’t want crazy high speeds.

GOOD FOR HEAVIER KIDS

#8. SISIGAD Hoverboard

SISIGAD Hoverboard Self Balancing Scooter

Specs

Motor300w Dual Motors
Battery36V/2.0Ah Li-ion batteries
Charging Time5 hours
Max Speed9 mph
Max Distance9 miles
Max Capacity260 lbs
Hoverboard Weight20 lbs

What We Loved

This is another of the most affordable models that we have reviewed. Despite being a really reasonable price, the Sisigad has a slightly more powerful motor than the Tomoloo, and it also has the lights and Bluetooth speaker.

It also has a more generous top speed and range and will take little speed demons up to 9 miles per hour.

It might not be quite as light as the Tomoloo, but it is still lighter than your average model.

Despite this being a basic model that is not designed for off-roading, it has a surprisingly generous maximum weight capacity of 265lbs.

This is a lot more than some of the other budget priced models, and it will make it a good choice if it is to be ridden by heavier kids or adults.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Like the Veveline, this board takes up to 5 hours to charge. Not great for impatient little riders.

It doesn’t have any app, and it is not going to manage on rougher surfaces well. You wouldn’t really expect it to for the price though.

Overall Verdict

This is another very affordable model and one that could work better for bigger teenager and adult riders too.

GREAT FOR NERVOUS RIDERS

#9. SEGWAY miniPRO Smart Self-Balancing Transporter

SEGWAY miniPRO Smart Self-Balancing Transporter

Specs

Motor2x 400 watt motors (800w power overall)
Battery54.3 VDC, 310 Wh, lithium-ion battery
Charging Time4 hours
Max Speed10 mph
Max Distance14 miles
Max Capacity220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight28 lbs

What We Loved

The Segway miniPro is not really a true hoverboard; it is more like a hoverboard and full-size Segway hybrid.

This offers the rider more stability and balance than a traditional hoverboard, but it is a much more portable and affordable option when compared to a traditional hands-on segway.

You control direction and balance by using the adjustable knee control bar. While it will still take a bit of getting used to using, it generally provides more stability and balance than a normal hoverboard.

This is a good choice if you are worried about your kid injuring themselves, if they are nervous, or if they are just looking for a different challenge.

It rides a lot differently than a normal hoverboard does. Learning to lean into the bar with your legs to control the direction can be a bit odd at first.

It does have a training tutorial learning mode that needs to be completed before it will allow you to move onto faster speeds and this is really helpful.

For kids that want to tackle more extreme outdoor adventures, the Segway miniPro will appeal. It is much more versatile than the basic model hoverboards we have reviewed.

It has a powerful motor, and it handles hills with relative ease, providing they are not too extreme.

The wide and grippy 10.5-inch air-filled tires also help to provide a smoother riding experience, extra stability and a lot of traction.

This is also one of the faster models we have reviewed, with top speeds of up to 10mph, and it can accelerate in a very nippy fashion.

Despite it having bigger wheels and the knee control bar, it is surprisingly light. There are some normal hoverboards that we have reviewed that weigh more than this does.

The app that comes with this model is very interactive. If your kid is a tech geek, they will be kept entertained for hours playing around with the different settings and tracking modes.

You can lock it by remote control, it has an anti-theft motion-activated alarm, and you can even control its movement remotely too.

Why it Might Not Work For You

If your kid has ridden a normal hoverboard before then transitioning to using the knee control bar of the Segway miniPro will take some getting used to.

It has an autoslow function that means that when you hit the top speed, it tilts back and slows down instead of allowing you just to maintain your top speed.

It disrupts the fluidity of the riding experience, and it can actually make you feel slightly off-balance if you are not expecting it.

Although this does offer a lot for the money, it is one of the most expensive models we reviewed, so not ideal if you are on a restricted budget.

Although it is not as heavy as some hoverboards, it is not as easy to transport with the awkward additional knee control bar and big wheels.

Overall Verdict

For nervous riders, additional stability and a comfortable and fast ride, the Segway miniPro could prove appealing. Just not the best choice for portability or if you are on a budget.

EPIKGO Self Balancing Scooter Hover Self-Balance Board

Specs

Motor400w dual motor (800w power overall)
BatteryLG 4300m AH, 37v battery pack
Charging Time2 hours
Max Speed15 mph
Max Distance10 miles+
Max Capacity240 lbs
Hoverboard Weight31 lbs

What We Loved

This is a versatile, all-round hoverboard. It is a good choice for more experienced kid riders and teenagers. It has a very powerful motor and can reach heart-stopping speeds of 15mph, with a serious kick in terms of acceleration too.

The grippy knobby tires provide a lot of traction, and it copes well with hills and surfaces like grass, sand and gravel.

Why it Might Not Work For You

For younger kids, the power behind this hoverboard may be too much. Parents should consider whether it could increase the chance of injury and whether their kids could handle it with confidence and safety.

Despite this being able to cope with rougher terrain, it has solid rubber tires rather than air-filled. This means you don’t get such a smooth ride.

The frame is quite bulky. It isn’t as heavy as a couple of the other models reviewed, but it is still not the most portable.

This model doesn’t have any app or Bluetooth capabilities.

The biggest downside to the EPIKGO self-balancing hoverboard is its price tag. It is exorbitantly expensive, way more than any of the others reviewed. While it is a powerful, sturdy and reliable model, it is hard to justify this price really.

Overall Verdict

A powerful, reliable and sleek model, although it doesn’t offer the best value for money and is not for those on a budget.
