If you have ever ridden an electric scooter, you will know the adrenaline-inducing feeling you get, even if you just try to take it up to 15 or 20mph. It can be knee-knocking!

Most electric scooters available to buy have a maximum top speed of 15 – 20 mph. Some go up to 25mph, some even slightly more.

Now try imagining taking it up to 55 or 60 mph! Crazy, right? Only the most serious speed riders would ever even consider trying this.

It is not for the faint-hearted, and it would be madness to take it out on the normal roads as a novice rider.

Some scooters can reach these speeds though, although they are usually bespoke models that have been built for competitive riders and speed vehicle enthusiasts and collectors.

In this article, we are going to take a look at a couple of the fastest electric scooters out there, and then another eight of the best electric scooters that are still crazy fast, but actually available to purchase through normal channels to take on the roads.

Quick Note on the Law and Safety

If you are riding any scooter, it is always recommended that you wear a helmet, and in some states, it is a legal requirement.

It is also a good idea to use additional protective gear and be aware of just how dangerous it is heading out on the road at high speeds. Only take it up to high speeds in carefully selected spaces where you are not going to be putting pedestrians or other drivers at risk. You also need to be a confident and careful rider.

In the United States, the laws can vary greatly depending on where you are riding. Some states don’t even have specific laws for electric scooters yet. This is largely because they have been unprepared for the sudden surge in popularity that electric scooters have had.

You should always double-check what legislation is in place where you are based before purchasing a higher speed scooter. You don’t want to be disappointed if you can’t use it where you had planned to.

How Fast Do Electric Scooters Go?

Most regular electric scooters have a max speed of 20mph. If you have ever ridden one, you will know that this is generally plenty fast enough.

For those speed demons that want to push it to the limit, some models can go considerably faster than this.

Rion Motors have developed one of the fastest electric scooters. With a carbon fiber frame and a massive 5000-watt motor, it has been tested at reaching speeds of over 60 mph. It is claimed that it could reach eye-wateringly fast speeds of 80 miles per hour!

The Two Fastest eScooters In The World

FASTEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER IN THE WORLD

#1. Rion Motors Special Edition Electric Scooter

Top Speed: 80 mph (Race Edition)
Price: $4,500

Rion Motors based in Los Angeles, specialize in producing incredibly high specification power electric scooters. With carbon frames, they are surprisingly lightweight, under 40lbs, and can go crazy fast.

This scooter can reach top speeds that can match the Renault Twizy electric car. The acceleration is ridiculous, with its 5000w motor, and it pulls away faster than some motorbikes.

The Special Edition model has been tested hitting speeds of close to 60mph which is pretty mind-blowing. They even have a one-off race edition that it is claimed could reach speeds of up to 80mph!

Although this is designed to be powerful, reliable and stable, you are not getting lots of extra accessories with the Rion. It doesn’t have lights, bells, fenders of even an LCD display like most other off-the-shelf models do. This is all about the power.

RUNNER UP

#2. Dualped Scorpion+ Electric ScooteR

Top Speed: 62.5 mph
Price: $5,000

dualped scorpion fastest escooter

The Dualped Scorpion Plus is often given the moniker of being the fastest electric scooter in the world too.

It is claimed to be able to reach speeds of a pants-wetting 62.5 mph. The big difference between this and the Rion is the weight. It comes in at a huge 104lbs. You are getting a seriously solid model, though.

FASTEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER

#1. Outstorm Maxx Ultra High-Speed

OUTSTORM 56MPH Ultra High Speed Electric Scooter for Adults Foldable

Specs

Motor3200w 60v Dual hub motor
Battery60V 26AH LG lithium battery
Charging Time6 hours
Max Speed56 mph
Max Distance52 miles
Max Capacity485 lbs
Scooter Weight101 lbs

What We Loved

If you have the experience and the space to hit high speeds, then the Outstorm could be for you. It can reach a hair-raising 56 mph.

If you are a heavier rider, it also has an incredibly generous 485lb maximum weight capacity. You also get a detachable seat post with this model.

The 3200w dual-motor powers you up those hills in no time, and it has a pretty comfortable ride thanks to the dual suspension shock absorption.

You even get to choose if you want off-road pneumatic tires that provide even more support or more durable solid road tires that you don’t have to worry about punctures. This scooter can handle a bit of off-roading.

Because of the powerful 60v battery, it will take you the distance too. It can reach up to 52 miles, depending on your riding style, weight and conditions. The dual charger means that, despite the battery size, it still reaches full charge quicker than a lot of the models we reviewed.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Shipped from outside of the United States, the customer support is by email and, if you have a problem, you could have to wait longer for replacement parts.

This scooter is a whopper. At over 100lbs, it is not easy to move around when you are not riding it.

Overall Verdict

Super fast, very powerful and provides a comfortable ride. The scooter is a brick though, and not easy to lift or transport.

OFF-ROAD POTENTIAL

#2. Inokim OxO

Inokim OxO

Specs

MotorTwo silent dual 1000W brushless motors
Battery60V 26Ah LG Li-ion battery
Charging Time12 – 14 hours
Max Speed40 mph
Max Distance50 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight74 lbs

What We Loved

Inokim are fast developing a reputation for being one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality electric scooters.  Their OxO model is a versatile all-rounder.  It’s very fast, with a 40mph upper limit, and has a large battery that allows you to get a generous maximum range of 50 miles on a single charge.

Although the motor isn’t as powerful as the likes of the Max Outstorm or Qiewa Qpower models, it still packs a punch.  This means it can tackle even steep hills with surprising speed and acceleration.

There’s lots of other nifty features to love about this model – especially if you want to do a bit of off-roading.  It has responsive hydraulic brakes and a unique adjustable height suspension to provide a comfortable riding experience, even at fast speeds.  The fat, pneumatic tires and wide deck also provide additional support and stability.

Why it Might Not Work For You

It takes a long time to charge the OxO with its huge 60v battery.  Not great if you’re in a rush to get right back out there.

Plus, this scooter is pretty heavy.  If you like to hop on and off public transport, it’s cumbersome and doesn’t fold down as flat as some of the other models reviewed.

It does have a high specification, but the cost of this scooter is a little eye-watering.  At over $2,500 it’s the most expensive we’ve reviewed.

Overall Verdict

The scooters from the Inokim brand have a good reputation and a high specification, and the OxO is no exception.  A versatile all-rounder, although it doesn’t come cheap.

GREAT ALL-AROUND SCOOTER

#3. Mantis

fluid free ride mantis

Specs

MotorTwo powerful brushless 60V 1000W motors
BatteryFST Li-ion 60V 17.5Ah
Charging Time10-12 hours
Max Speed40 mph
Max Distance50 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight65 lbs

What We Loved

Like the OxO, the Mantis from Fluid Free Ride, with its 60v battery can go the distance.  If you love long-distance scooting, but you can’t stretch to getting the Oxo, then this could be a more affordable alternative.

It still provides  2000w of power and copes with hills in a way that many other e-scooters can’t, and you’re guaranteed a lot of torque too.  This is a good choice if you live somewhere like San Francisco and have to tackle steep gradients every day.

The wide tires and dual suspension mean that, even at high speeds or on gravelly roads, you’re getting a relatively smooth ride too.

The semi-hydraulic braking system on the Matis is pretty responsive, and it gives you confidence in stopping distances.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The Mantis shares a lot of similarities with the OxO, but it isn’t quite as sophisticated.  The suspension isn’t adjustable, and it isn’t designed for the same type of off-roading.  It’s best suited as a commuter or cruising option that will still be comfy if the track gets a little bumpy.

The brakes aren’t quite as advanced either.  It only has a semi-hydraulic braking system instead of the full type offered by the Oxo.  To be fair, though, this should be more than enough in most conditions.

Overall Verdict

More affordable than the OxO from Inokim, the Mantis still provides a high specification and comfortable riding experience along with a generous range.

PERFECT MID-GRADE ESCOOTER

#4. Inokim OX

inokim ox

Specs

Motor800W rear brushless hub motor
Battery60V 13Ah L-ion battery
Charging Time6-8 hours
Max Speed28 mph
Max Distance32 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight57 lbs

What We Loved

Let’s start with the obvious.  The Ox is a lot more affordable than the higher-spec OxO model from Inokim.  Despite this, it still has a lot of great features.

The battery still allows you to reach a maximum range of 32 miles – which isn’t to be sniffed at.  It also charges quicker too.  Perfect if you need to top up the battery while you’re at work.

It’s also a heck of a lot lighter than the OxO.  If you’re having to carry the scooter onto public transport or up a flight of stairs to work, this will be a big bonus.

It might not have the wide off-road capable tires of the OxO, but it still has good adjustable suspension, and this makes for a comfortable ride around town.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The Ox only has mechanical disc brakes rather than the hydraulic type used on the OxO.  If you’re riding at high speeds, especially if the weather conditions are a bit wet, you might need to be careful about allowing extra stopping distance.

This scooter doesn’t have the oomph that all the models reviewed prior to it does.  It only has an 800w motor.  It still accelerates well on flat surfaces, but it’s performance on steep gradients isn’t quite as impressive.

For mega speed demons, the 28mph top speed isn’t as impressive as the models we reviewed earlier either.

Overall Verdict

The Ox is a more affordable alternative to Inokims OxO model.  It might not be able to go quite as fast or as far, but, for all but the biggest speed demons, it’ll tick a lot of boxes.

LIGHT AND AFFORDABLE

#5. Mercane Widewheel Pro

mercane widewheel pro

Specs

MotorDual 500w motor
Battery48V 15Ah Li-ion battery
Charging Time6 hours
Max Speed26 mph
Max Distance22+ miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight54 lbs

What We Loved

If you want speed, but not crazy amounts, then you might want to consider the Mercane.

The motor is not as powerful as some of the other models reviewed, but it still handles hills well, and it is a very stable scooter.

And let’s face it, unless you are a serious adrenaline junkie, being able to get up to speeds of 25mph on an electric scooter is enough to get the heart racing as it is!

It also looks a little slicker than some of the bulkier high-speed options. Even though it is still heavy when measured against a lot of high-speed scooters, it feels feather-light in comparison at 50lbs.

It is not a budget scooter, but for the specification, and compared to the other high-speed models we are reviewing it is a very affordable price too.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although this scooter does have suspension, it is not as sophisticated as some of the other models reviewed. This combined with the fact that the tires are solid rubber rather than air-filled, and it means the ride is not quite as smooth. So, while you don’t have to worry about getting a puncture, make sure to take care on less smooth roads.

One thing we would have expected for a scooter in this price range would be a more interactive interface. It is pretty basic, and it can be hard to get an accurate idea of how much battery charge you have left.

Unfortunately, this scooter is not designed for heavier riders as it has a claimed maximum weight capacity of just 220lbs.

This is another model that has a speed limiter installed. You will need to remove this if you want it to go any faster. This should be done with care, to prevent any damage or problems with the electrics. There are instructions and also video guidance online that you can follow.

The range is not as impressive as some of the others reviewed at between just 20 and 30 miles.

Overall Verdict

Relatively lightweight and comparatively affordable, the Mercane Widewheel may not take you up to the dizzying speeds of some models, but it is a reliable all-rounder.

MOST AFFORDABLE FAST ELECTRIC SCOOTER

#6. Horizon

fluid free ride horizon

Specs

Motor500w motor
BatteryLithium-ion 48V 10.4Ah
Max Speed23 mph
Max Distance20 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight40 lbs

What We Loved

If you’re looking for a practical, well-made and affordable scooter that can still reach decent speeds, then you might want to consider the Horizon from Fluid Free Rider.

Way cheaper than most of the scooters on this list, it can still get you up to a generous 23mph top speed.  Plus, despite the price, it’s surprising the number of features this scooter has.

For starters, it still has front and rear suspension to ensure a more comfortable riding experience.

Although the rear brake is only a drum variety, it is still responsive enough given this isn’t as fast as some of the models we have reviewed, plus it features handy regenerative braking too.

The Horizon is also the lightest and most slimline of all the bikes we’ve reviewed, making it a great portable option for commuters.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Although this scooter’s top speed is generous when you consider the price, it’s not one of the fastest models out there.  For those looking for serious speed, or if you plan to tackle hills a lot, the 500w motor could prove frustratingly lacking in power.

Also, despite the suspension, the Horizon hasn’t been designed with off-roading in mind.  It doesn’t have wide, pneumatic tires and the deck isn’t the widest, so it doesn’t offer the same stability.

Overall Verdict

The Horizon offers excellent value for money.  It’s very affordable, well built and practical, it just won’t take you to the eye-watering speeds of some of the pricier models.

CHEAPEST FAST ESCOOTER

#7. Uberscoot 1600w

UberScoot 1600w 48v Electric Scooter

Specs

Motor1600w electric motor
BatteryFour 12V/12AH (48 volt system) Sealed Lead Acid (SLA)
Charging Time8 hours
Max Speed30 mph
Max Distance12 miles
Max Capacity265 lbs
Scooter Weight117 lbs

What We Loved

If you want to hit high speeds, but you don’t have the money to get one of the more high-end, extreme speed scooters, then you may want to consider the Uberscoot. It is a lot more affordable than all the other models that we have reviewed.

It still has a 1600w motor and decent acceleration, and it can reach up to 30mph top speed – absolutely fast enough, even for adrenaline junkies.

It could also be a good choice for heavier riders as it can accommodate over 400lbs in weight.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Apart from the price and the motor power, this scooter doesn’t have nearly as much going for it as the other models we have reviewed. This is one of those times when you really do get what you pay for.

For starters, it is disappointing that the Uberscoot relies on lead-based batteries rather than lithium-ion ones. Opting for these cheaper, lower-quality batteries means that its longevity will be much reduced, especially if it is being pushed up to high speeds regularly.

These lead-based batteries also only give a pretty pathetic maximum range of just 12 miles. Not good for long-distance riding and, if being used at high speeds, you can’t expect it to take you far at all.

The braking system is not as responsive as some of the higher specification models either. Make sure you test it out thoroughly before hitting high speeds.

This scooter is also a whopper. At 117lbs it is way heavier than any of the other models we have looked at and is so cumbersome. Een trying to lift it up a small number of stairs or into the car is going to be a challenge.

The general specification of this scooter is lower. The parts used are not as high quality as some of the other models, and they are known to have a few issues with the reliability of the build. With only a 90-day warranty, this is a worry.

Overall Verdict

If you are very limited on your budget but want to try out a high-speed scooter, then you could opt for the Uberscoot. If you are looking for value for money, you would be better off saving for a little longer and holding out for a higher specification model.

GOOD FOR HEAVIER RIDERS

#8. Qiewa QPower

QIEWA QPOWER Duble Motors Off Road Scooter

Specs

Motor3200 watt dual motor
Battery48Volts 26Ah lithium-ion battery
Charging Time15 hours
Max Speed50 mph
Max Distance60 miles
Max CapacityOver 400 lbs
Scooter Weight81.5 lbs

What We Loved

This is one of the fastest scooters we reviewed, capable of achieving speeds of up to a massive 50mph. It also has a generous range and, if you don’t always have the dual motors engaged, you could get up to a maximum of 60 miles on one charge.

The acceleration is immense, and it handles hills well. The scooter is stable and durable and could work well for heavier riders because of its massive 400lbs weight capacity.

The hydraulic brakes are pretty responsive and only need a light touch.

Why it Might Not Work For You

This scooter is one of the more expensive of those we reviewed, but the engineering is not as sophisticated as some of the others and may not be as reliable long term.

It does have a one year warranty, but if you need replacement parts, these have to be shipped from Asia. So, you could face a long delay in getting up and running again.

It is more complicated to assemble than some of the other models, and the instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired. You can’t just pick up the phone to customer support either as they are only available by email.

Overall Verdict

This is a fast and powerful scooter, but we think that some of the other models reviewed offer better value for money.

What Factors Impact eScooter Top Speed?

When you are checking the technical specification of some of the best electric scooters, they will usually advise of the top speed possible. You should be aware that it is not always possible to reach those speeds. Certain other things can influence the speed of an electric scooter, including the following.

The Weight of the Rider

The heavier the rider is, the harder the motor and the battery will have to work to push the scooter up to top speeds. Usually, the manufacturers will advise of the maximum weight capacity that a scooter can handle.

Getting up to high speeds will take longer with a heavier rider. Sometimes, the motor will just not manage to convert enough power to push you up to the fastest speeds that the scooter is capable of.

A heavier rider will also drain the battery life more quickly and you will have less range on a single charge because the motor has to work harder to get up to those top speeds.

Where possible, always make sure that you select a scooter that has a maximum weight capacity considerably above your weight to enable you to maximize its speed potential.

Check our reviews of the best electric scooters for heavier riders here.

fast electric scooter

The Type of Terrain

If you are riding a scooter on anything but perfectly smooth road surfaces, be prepared for this to impact on your speed.

Dirt tracks, for example, can mean that the scooter will sink further into the ground and lumps and bumps will naturally slow the speed. The motor has to work harder to cope with these types of surfaces, and it will make it a challenge to hit the highest speeds.

Riding up steep gradients can have a huge impact on your speed, especially if the motor size is small. If you live somewhere like San Francisco, it is going to be harder to get up to top speeds.

If you do plan to take it off-road or ride it regularly up hills, make sure you select a model that is designed to handle this sort of terrain. It will need a powerful battery and motor, and it will perform better if it has air-filled rather than solid tires.

Check our reviews of the best off-road electric scooters here.

Tire Pressure

If your scooter has pneumatic tires, you should regularly check their pressure. If they become too soft, this can impact on your speed and range capabilities.

It also means that they will be less effective at absorbing the shocks from any rougher terrain that you are tackling. You are not going to get such a smooth ride.

Some scooters come with solid rubber tires. They can be a good choice for straight forward commuting, and it means you don’t have to worry about getting a puncture.

If you plan to do any serious trail scooting, then a model with air-filled tires would usually be the preferred choice for better all-around riding experience.

Riding on a Low Charge

With some scooter models, as the battery begins to drain, this will impact your scooter’s performance. To enable you to continue powering along at top speeds, you should avoid running your battery down to close to empty.

Avoiding letting it run right down to empty regularly can also be better for the overall longevity of your lithium battery too.

How To Make an Electric Scooter Go Faster

As well as keeping the weight down, and riding on a full charge with appropriately filled tires, it is possible to help a scooter go faster by making certain modifications. Generally, this involves installing a more powerful battery and/or electric motor.

Making modifications requires some technical expertise, and before tackling this, you should always be confident that you know what you are doing.

Also be aware that if you do make any alterations, this will invalidate any warranty that you may have on your scooter. Often, it will be easier just to make a decision that you want to go for a higher specification model and buy this instead.

If you want to install a more powerful battery, you need to be careful that this will not cause the electrics to overheat. This can be done by reprogramming the scooter’s controller to allow it to handle higher speeds.

Sometimes you can bypass the controller altogether and connect the battery directly to the motor.

Safety Should be a Priority For High-Speed Riders

Hitting those top speeds means that you have to be extra careful about where and how you are riding.

Protective gear is a must have at high speeds, and you will need to check the local laws and regulations to find out where you can use the scooter at high speeds.

A helmet is an obvious requirement, but it would be sensible to also invest in further protective body gear including elbow, knee and chest protectors. Don’t skip this important consideration.

Fractures are common scooter injuries, and you should also be aware of the risk you can be putting others at when riding at these speeds. Pick quiet stretches of the track which are free from heavy traffic and pedestrians.

Riding city streets over 20mph is not generally recommended.

If you are new to electric scooters, be aware of your own limitations and expertise. Don’t push up to the high speeds until you are a confident and experienced rider.
