What Are the Advantages of Using an Electric Unicycle?

While they do generally take more time to master the riding style than an electric skateboard or even a hoverboard, they can often handle a wider variety of terrain.

The unicycle wheel is larger than both those of an electric skateboard and a hoverboard, and it gives greater ground clearance.

They are also very portable and easy to store, and often have higher speed and power capabilities. Although, riding them at high speeds is not for the faint-hearted and the braking is not as responsive as that on a scooter or skateboard.

They are also appealing because they truly are a hands-free way of riding. There are no handlebars for steering, and there is no remote control to carry to handle speed and braking like there is with an electric skateboard.

Electric unicycles generally go faster and farther than scooters and hoverboards. They can also cope better with heavier riders than a hoverboard, too.

There is a Steeper Learning Curve with an Electric Unicycle

One thing you should be prepared for if you decide to invest in an electric unicycle is a steep learning curve to master riding this thing! With an electric scooter, for example, you can pretty much get straight on and off you go.

Learning how to balance on a single wheel was never going to be easy. You also have to steer with your body, and it can be disconcerting being completely hands-free.

You need patience and tenacity and can’t be afraid to fall off.

This just means that you need to allow this extra time before you can get out for a commute or long-distance ride with a purpose.

Safety Is Paramount

Because of the steep learning curve, the exposed riding position and the fast speeds that these things can travel at, you really do need to take safety precautions seriously.

Riding without a helmet is an absolute no-no, and you really should ideally be at least using protective pads for your elbows and knees.

Be mindful of where and how you are riding — no fast speeds in busy pedestrianized or vehicle heavy areas.

What Are the Laws Regarding Electric Unicycle Riding?

As with other PEVs like scooters and skateboards, the laws around the use of electric unicycles can be confusing, convoluted and sometimes even non-existent.

In some countries, they are even deemed as being illegal for use on public roads.

In the United States, the rules are more relaxed, but they can vary greatly from state to state. Some states are struggling to respond to the rise in popularity of PEVs, and they have not introduced any specific legislation yet.

You should always double-check what regulations, if any, are in place for the specific region that you are living in before purchasing your electric unicycle.

You will want to make sure that you can use it in the areas and at the speeds you want before you make any investment.

Reviews of the Best Electric Unicycles

Electric Unicycles are the most recent style of PEV to be introduced onto the market. This means that there are fewer brands and models to choose from than the likes of scooters, skateboards or hoverboards.

It also means that they are in the earlier stages of design and build development. Things can be fast-moving in terms of changes to specifications, capabilities and price points.

They are still more expensive in general that scooters and hoverboards, but they can provide more versatility.

By picking a well-known brand like InMotion or King Song, you are more likely to get a reliable product that is well-reviewed and tested. You will, however, also have a premium to pay for these names.

InMotion V10 Electric Unicycle One Wheel Transporter with Mobile App

Specs

Motor1800 w motor
Battery Pack8.8AH 650WH
Charging Time6 hours
Speed Limit25 mph
Max Distance43 miles
Weight Limit260 lbs
Hoverboard Weight45.4 lbs

What We Loved

The InMotion Electric Unicycles are often regarded as the best on the market. The V10 model is no exception, and if you are serious about using an electric unicycle regularly, then splashing out on this baby could be a worthwhile investment.

You know you are getting something with top specifications, it looks seriously slick and it is designed to last. It offers one of the most stable and comfortable riding experiences out there.

The pedal positioning has been well thought out. They are positioned higher than some models, and this helps if you love to do lots of sweeping carving or you have tight spaces to squeeze through.

They are also much larger than a lot of models and very grippy, and this ensures a comfortable and secure foot positioning.

The V10 is also ideal for long-distance commuting as it has a very generous maximum range capacity of 43 miles.

It can manage some light off-roading and the grippy 16-inch air-filled tire, which is 2.5-inch wide, provides great traction and stability on grass and gravel.

The lights on the InMotion models are excellent, and they provide good visibility for night riding (just make sure you also have high viz gear on).

There are front, rear, and sidelights and the InMotion mobile app allows you to control which ones you are using.

It has a handy and very sturdy retractable handle, which makes it easier to move the unicycle around when you are not riding it.

This really is a practical feature as this model weighs in at a pretty hefty 45.4lbs, and it would not be easy to lift and carry for any distances in between riding.

The app on the V10 is extremely advanced with lots of great features for you to play around with. Tech geeks will be in their element.

There are also high-quality built-in speakers to allow you to play music through Bluetooth connection if that is something that appeals.

Why it Might Not Work For You

While it really is one of the best on the market, this is an expensive model. If you are on a budget, then you may want to opt for something simpler like the Ninebot.

Although the handle helps to make it more portable, it is not the easiest to lift and transport given it is on the heavier side.

This is a seriously powerful model, and the acceleration has some kick. For younger, less experienced riders, you may prefer to opt for a model that doesn’t have quite the same high top speeds.

This will minimize the risk of injury if you have a kid that is likely to get carried away.

Just a minor gripe, but the carry handlebar can feel slightly loose and wobbly. For such a high-quality model, it seems a shame this small thing has been slightly overlooked.

Overall Verdict

If you have the available funds to splurge on this model, you know you will get a reliable electric unicycle. It will go the distance and is plenty fast enough.

The design and build mean you will have a very comfortable and stable riding experience. This is our top choice for good reason.

AFFORDABLE OPTION FOR BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE RIDERS

#2. Ninebot One S1

ninebot one electric unicycle

Specs

Motor400w motor
Battery Pack310 Wh Lithium Ion
Charging Time4 hours
Speed Limit12.5 mph
Max Distance15 miles
Weight Limit220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight25 lbs

What We Loved

The Ninebot One S1 electric unicycle is a much more affordable model than the likes of the Inmotion V10 or the King Song 16X. But, it still offers a lot of good features, and they are known for being reliable and well built.

This is a model that would be easier to transport on a daily commute. It is much lighter than many other models, weighing in at just 25lbs.

The Segway products also all have very good apps, and this model is no exception.

Like the InMotion models, this has good quality built-in LED lights that are customizable through the app.

Why it Might Not Work For You

For serious, long-distance commuters or experienced riders that want to push the limits, the Ninebot One S1 will not be for you.

The top speed of this unicycle is just 12.5mph. It is perfect for young kids or those that want to feel safer while riding, but it is pretty limiting and will not make for a zippy commuter option.

The motor is the smallest of those we have reviewed at just 400w. This means it doesn’t pack much of a punch in terms of power, acceleration capabilities, or ability to go off-road or up hills.

Overall Verdict

The Ninebot One S1 is an affordable, reliable model, but it is limited in its power capabilities.

For those looking for a long-distance commuting option, that can reach high speeds, handle hills and rougher terrain, then you may need to invest in a higher specification model.

BEST FOR HEAVIER RIDERS

#3. King Song 16X

King Song electric unicycle

Specs

Motor2200w motor
Battery Pack84V 1554wh
Charging Time4 hours
Speed Limit30 mph
Max Distance65 miles
Weight Limit330 lbs
Hoverboard Weight51 lbs

What We Loved

King Song are strong competitors to InMotion for developing some of the best electric unicycles on the current market.

Their 16X is a new model, and it is a beauty. Its seriously powerful 2200 watt motor has fantastic acceleration capabilities, and it is one of the best unicycles for handling steep inclines.

If you live in a hilly area, like San Francisco, this could be a worthwhile investment.

If you are a speed demon, you will love the 16X. It has a top speed of 30mph, and it is one of the fastest models around.

Even at high speeds, the wide pedals and comfortable design mean that you get a stable riding experience.

The wide 3-inch tire also contributes to this, and it also provides great traction and absorbs bumps well if you take it onto rougher terrain like grass or gravel.

If you are a regular long-distance rider, you can’t really go wrong with the 16X. Its massive 84v battery means it is capable of reaching up to 65 miles on one charge. Way farther than most of the other electric unicycles on the market.

Despite the battery being so large, it still charges up again in around 4 hours, which is a bonus.

If you are a heavier rider, then the 16X will be a great choice as it has a way above average, generous 330lb weight capacity.

As with most high-quality models, this has a good app, in-built speakers and an efficient lighting system.

Why it Might Not Work For You

King Song has a reputation for building very robust and high-performing models, but they are not known for their sleek design. This is still the case with the 16X; it looks functional rather than fancy.

Not a big thing but, if looking cool is a priority for you, the InMotion models may be a better choice.

This is not a highly portable option. It weighs a whopping 51lbs and, even with its carry handle, it is still awkward to carry over any distance.

This is another model that won’t suit a rider that is on a restricted budget. We still believe it offers good value for money, but it is an expensive, top of the range model.

For new riders, you may not have to spend as much money to get something that will work for you. The high speed and power capabilities of this model could provide unnecessary and intimidating.

Overall Verdict

King Song are one of the Industry Leaders in electric unicycle design. The new 16X model would be a perfect choice for long-distance riders that want to hit high speeds and tackle hills with ease.

It is just that this sort of high-specification comes with an equally high price tag.

FASTEST ELECTRIC UNICYCLE WE REVIEWED

#4. Gotway Monster

GotWay Monster 3 84V 100V Monster 22 inch electric unicycle

Specs

Motor2000w motor
Battery Pack100V 1845Wh
Speed Limit38 mph
Max Distance70 + miles
Weight Limit330 lbs
Hoverboard Weight60 lbs

What We Loved

While GotWay doesn’t have quite the same reputation as the likes of InMotion or Kong Song, this is another model for the serious pro electric unicycle riders out there.

Boy, can this travel. The powerful battery and motor mean that you can get up to almost crazy speeds of 38mph!

This really is not a model for the faint-hearted, and it would be best suited to those with the skills and knowledge of how and where is the safest to travel at top speeds.

It is also another model suited to heavier riders. Like the King Song 16X, it is capable of accommodating riders weighing up to 330lbs.

The massive 22-inch tire offers a lot of traction and stability. If you have been used to riding a smaller unicycle, this bigger size may take some getting used to.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The Gotway shells are not as durable as the likes of the InMotion or the King Song. For longevity, especially if used a lot on rougher terrain, it is not as good a choice.

It is also not as waterproof as many other models. If you live in a rainy state, that could prove to be a disadvantage.

Despite the shell not being as robust, because it has such a big battery, motor and tire, this model is a whopper. It weighs an enormous 60lbs, and it makes it extremely cumbersome to move around when not in use.

This is one of the biggest drawbacks of this model, and one that might put a lot of people off.

This is also the most expensive of all the models we reviewed. Unless you really do enjoy being a speed demon over incredibly long distances, other models offer better value for money.

Overall Verdict

A big and seriously powerful beast of an electric unicycle, the Gotway Monster lives up to its name. It is just a shame that it is so heavy and has such a whopping big price too.

A MORE AFFORDABLE MODEL FROM A TOP BRAND

#5. InMotion V8

InMotion V8 Electric Unicycle

Specs

Motor800w
Battery Pack84V 480Wh
Charging Time5 hours
Speed Limit18.5mph
Max Distance31 miles
Weight Limit265 lbs
Hoverboard Weight29.75 lbs

What We Loved

While the Inmotion V10 and the King Song 16X that we have reviewed are both top of the range models in the world of electric unicycles, they are both seriously expensive.

They also have crazy high top speeds and power. Unless you really are a speed demon, experienced rider, you don’t necessarily need such a high specification.

However, some riders beginner riders may find the likes of the Ninebot One S1 starts to become a little limiting as their experience and confidence grows.

The InMotion V8 offers something in between these two options. It has a decent top speed of just over 18mph and still goes the distance with a maximum range of 31 miles.

At the same time, it is at a much more affordable price point, and you know you are still getting a very reliable and sleek looking model.

It is also a lot lighter than some of the higher specification models. This makes it a great choice for a commuter looking for something that is easier to lift on and off public transport or carry up a flight of stairs.

Like the V10, it also has a retractable handle that allows you to pull the unicycle along when not in use.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Unlike the V10, this model is not as suited to off-roading. It is better to stick with smooth road surfaces with the V8.

It doesn’t have a rear light, like the V10. The side and front light are still great, but for maximum visibility for night riding, it would be nice to see this additional one being added.

Once the battery gets lower, you can really feel the V8 start to drop in power capabilities. You will need to keep it topped up for maximum performance.

Overall Verdict

Less powerful than the Inmotion V10 or King Song 16X, but it is much more affordable, still very reliable and has more than enough power and range for most riders.

BEST BUDGET ELECTRIC UNICYCLE

#6. Hoverclub Solo Electric Unicycle

Hoverclub Solo Electric Unicycle

Specs

Motor500w motor
Speed Limit7.5 mph
Max Distance12.5 miles
Weight Limit220 lbs
Hoverboard Weight29.3 lbs

What We Loved

If you are an entry-level rider lacking in confidence, or you want to introduce a younger kid to Unicycling, then the Hoverboard Solo may be one to try.

It is by far the most affordable of all the models we have reviewed so, for those on a budget, it may appeal.

Because it only has a 500w motor and a top speed of 7.5mph, it will be less intimidating to learn on. Parents don’t have to worry about kids hitting nerve-jangling high speeds.

It is also reasonably lightweight, in comparison with some models. The dual tires (meaning it is not strictly a unicycle) help to give it a bit of extra stability. Even though it is a budget model, it still has LED lights and a carry handle.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Being a budget model, you can’t expect the same reliability or longevity that you will get with the likes of InMotion or King Song.

The shell is basic to look at and not terribly robust. It won’t handle any off-roading and is not ideal for riding in wet weather conditions.

It isn’t a good choice for heavy riders or for trying to tackle hills; it will end up going at a snail’s pace, and you will drain the battery much more quickly.

The 14-inch wide tire and shell construction don’t lend themselves well to taller riders with bigger feet. The pedals are pretty narrow, and it can be difficult to get into a comfortable riding position.

Unsurprisingly, given the price, there is no fancy app or Bluetooth speaker capabilities.

Overall Verdict

For young or new riders, this is a very affordable option for trying out a spot of electric unicycling. Don’t expect fantastic longevity and, as your experience grows, you could outgrow the limitations of this basic model.

MOST LIGHTWEIGHT ELECTRIC UNICYCLE

#7. LHY RIDING 14-Inch Electric Unicycle

LHY RIDING 14-Inch Electric Unicycle

Specs

Motor60v battery
Charging Time1.5 hours
Speed Limit9.5 mph
Max Distance21 miles
Weight Limit264lbs
Hoverboard Weight21.5kg

What We Loved

In terms of electric unicycles, the LHY Riding model is relatively affordable. It is also one of the lightest weight models around.

So, if you are looking for something that is a bit easier to carry around in between riding, this makes it stand out from the competition.

It also charges in just one and a half hours which is handy if you want to top up at work before heading back on a return journey.

Why it Might Not Work For You

Unless you really are sold on the light weight of this model, it could be a bit of a gamble. LHY Riding don’t have the reputation or selling history that brands like InMotion and King Song do.

You would be leaping into the unknown in terms of after-sales support and product longevity.

There are also some other limitations on this model that could provide frustrating. It doesn’t have the power or top speeds that you might want, and this may put users off if they need an electric unicycle for regular commuting.

It can’t even reach 10mph top speed.

It is also a very basic model in terms of build. It looks very rudimentary, and the 14-inch tire does not offer the same traction or stability as some other models. You couldn’t be tackling hills or rougher terrain on this.

Overall Verdict

If you really do want something light and you don’t want to spend too much, you could gamble on the LHY Riding electric unicycle.

Just remember that it is not an established brand, and it is a basic design and build that could prove unreliable and limiting.

A GOOD CHOICE FOR OFF-ROADING

#8. NineBot One Z10

Ninebot One Z10 Z6 Off-road electric unicycle

Specs

Motor1800 watt motor
Battery Pack995Wh battery
Charging Time9 hours
Speed Limit28 mph
Max Distance55 miles
Weight Limit330 lbs
Hoverboard Weight52.9 lbs

What We Loved

The Ninebot One Z10 is a great all-round option for those that might want to combine their electric unicycle usage. It will work well off-roading and for commuting.

It has an 18 inch, very wide tire that is exceptionally grippy and very supportive. It provides a much smoother riding experience than some other models as a result.

Because it is so much wider than a normal unicycle, it does need a bit of a different riding style that may take some getting used to.

It is capable of some serious off-roading in comparison with a lot of other electric unicycle models and handles gravel, grass and a lot of lumps and bumps with relative ease.

Its powerful motor also means that is is a very nippy model with responsive acceleration, and it can handle hills without dropping disappointingly in power.

Why it Might Not Work For You

The Z10 is very different in its build to a traditional electric unicycle because of its much bigger and wider wheel size. Some riders may find this frustrating if they are used to riding a thinner, smaller wheeled model.

It is also super expensive, and certainly not for new riders just wanting to decide if electric unicycles are going to be for them. This will be for a more experienced rider that knows they will get the use out of it.

If you are looking for a lightweight, portable electric unicycle, don’t opt for the Z10. At a muscle-popping 52lbs, it is one of the heaviest we have reviewed.

Of course, this comes with it having a powerful motor, long-ranging battery and very large tire. It just means it is not going to be the best model for hopping on and off public transport with.

At the time of this review, this was one Ninebots newest models and some users have reported glitches with the braking, which is worrying at high speeds.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for a versatile all-rounder that can handle all sorts of terrain with ease, provides a comfortable and stable riding experience, and will allow you to travel long distances on a single charge, then the Z10 could be for you. Just be prepared for a big dent in your bank balance!
